Overview
Franco Serblin Ktêma Reference Loudspeakers (each)
The Franco Serblin Ktêma is more than a high-end loudspeaker. It is one of Franco Serblin's defining creations—a speaker designed around the belief that a great audio system should serve the music rather than become the focus itself.
Its name comes from the ancient Greek expression “Ktêma eis aei,” meaning “a possession forever.” That idea runs through the entire design: timeless proportions, extraordinary craftsmanship, carefully chosen materials, and an acoustic architecture created to reproduce music naturally rather than impress with specifications alone.
Ktêma is unmistakably Italian, both in its appearance and its approach to music.
A Four-Way, Five-Driver Design
Behind Ktêma's sculptural cabinet is a sophisticated four-way, five-driver architecture.
The front of the loudspeaker concentrates on the most musically critical portion of the spectrum with a 28mm soft-dome tweeter and two custom 4-inch midrange drivers.
The dual midrange drivers operate in a specially designed cardioid acoustic-resistance configuration intended to reproduce musical perspective with exceptional accuracy.
Bass is handled very differently.
Two custom 9-inch metal-cone woofers are positioned toward the lower rear of the enclosure in a compression-controlled, room-interfaced configuration.
Rather than treating the room as something separate from the loudspeaker, Ktêma's low-frequency system was designed specifically around the way the speaker and room interact.
Designed Around the Musical Stage
Franco Serblin described the concept behind Ktêma as the “proscenium” — the focal point of the theater.
The idea was to preserve the center of the musical event: the singer, soloist, instrument, and space surrounding the performance.
That philosophy shaped both the physical form of the cabinet and the arrangement of its drivers.
Ktêma isn't designed simply to throw sound into a room. It's designed to recreate the scale, position, depth, and perspective of a musical performance.
Sculptural Italian Craftsmanship
The Ktêma enclosure uses a rigid triple arch-shaped structure, with concave front cheeks and a convex rear woofer section.
The shape isn't simply decorative. Form and acoustic function were developed together, resulting in a loudspeaker that looks more like a piece of Italian furniture or sculpture than conventional audio equipment.
Available finishes include High Gloss Piano Black, Satin Sycamore, and High Gloss Walnut, complemented by hand-polished aluminum details.
It's a speaker intended to become part of the room rather than dominate it.
Yter Silver-Palladium Wiring
Internal signal wiring is Yter pure Silver-Palladium mono-wiring throughout, continuing Franco Serblin's attention to materials and signal integrity all the way through the loudspeaker.
The crossover uses a mutational variable-slope, coherent spatial-radiation design, developed around the unusual driver configuration and acoustic behavior of the enclosure.
Surprisingly Amplifier Friendly
Despite its sophisticated design and substantial bass system, Ktêma offers a relatively high 92dB sensitivity.
Nominal impedance is 4 ohms, with a minimum of approximately 3.2 ohms at 70Hz, and Franco Serblin specifies a minimum amplifier output of only 20 watts per channel.
That opens the door to some very interesting amplifier combinations.
Ktêma can be partnered with powerful solid-state amplification, but its sensitivity also makes it an intriguing loudspeaker for carefully selected tube electronics.
This is a speaker where amplifier matching should be done by listening—not simply by comparing wattage numbers.
