Overview

VPI Titan Direct Reference Turntable

The VPI Titan Direct represents the highest expression of VPI's direct-drive turntable engineering, taking the technology developed for the award-winning Avenger Direct and pushing it into an even more substantial, highly isolated reference platform.

Built around an improved double-stack chassis, magnetic direct-drive system, air-suspension isolation, 25-pound aluminum platter, and VPI Fatboy Gimbal 12-3D tonearm, the Titan Direct is designed for analog systems where speed stability, vibration control and cartridge performance are pushed to the extreme.

This isn't simply a larger Avenger Direct. The Titan uses additional mass, isolation and resonance-control technologies to create VPI's ultimate direct-drive platform.

Magnetic Direct-Drive System

At the heart of the Titan Direct is VPI's magnetic direct-drive architecture.

Developed from the technology used in the Avenger Direct, the system provides direct control of the platter without the belts, pulleys or external drive assemblies used in conventional belt-drive turntables.

The direct-drive system delivers 2.68 Nm/sec of motor torque, while platter speed is continuously monitored at an extremely precise 2,500 pulses per revolution.

Start or stop the turntable and the massive platter responds in approximately one second.

The objective is exceptional rotational stability and control—the foundation for accurate pitch, timing and musical reproduction.

Improved Double-Stack Chassis

The Titan Direct goes beyond the standard Avenger architecture with an improved double-stack chassis constructed from aluminum and machined acrylic.

The additional structure increases mass and rigidity while providing a more substantial mechanical foundation for the platter, motor and tonearm assemblies.

VPI also incorporates additional resonance-canceling technology throughout the Titan design to further reduce unwanted mechanical energy from reaching the cartridge.

Air-Suspension Isolation

A reference turntable can't control what's happening in the record groove if vibration from the room, equipment rack or floor is reaching the stylus.

That's why the Titan Direct incorporates an air-suspension isolation system.

The suspension is designed to mechanically isolate the turntable from its environment, working alongside the Titan's substantial chassis and resonance-control architecture to provide the cartridge with an exceptionally stable platform.

25-Pound Aluminum Platter

The Titan Direct uses a massive 12-inch aluminum platter weighing 25 pounds.

Combining that rotational mass with the high-torque direct-drive system provides a stable and precisely controlled foundation for vinyl playback.

The platter, motor and isolation system are engineered together rather than treated as separate components, allowing VPI to control the entire mechanical system from the motor through the record itself.

VPI Fatboy Gimbal 12-3D Tonearm

The Titan Direct comes standard with VPI's Fatboy Gimbal 12-3D tonearm and VTA base.

The arm combines VPI's 3D construction technology with a full gimbal bearing and Nordost Reference internal wiring.

Its 12-inch architecture helps reduce tracking-angle error while providing the adjustability necessary to properly optimize some of the world's finest moving-coil cartridges.

Tonearm Specifications

  • Bearing: Full gimbal
  • Pivot-to-Spindle: 300 mm
  • Effective Length: 313 mm
  • Effective Mass: 12.5 g
  • Overhang: 13 mm

Up to Three Tonearms

Like the Avenger platform from which it evolved, the Titan Direct can accommodate up to three tonearms.

The architecture allows different tonearm lengths and even tonearms from other manufacturers through additional armboards.

That opens the door to building an extraordinary analog playback system around multiple cartridges.

A Titan Direct could be configured with a primary reference stereo moving-coil cartridge, a dedicated mono cartridge, and an entirely different cartridge or tonearm combination—all available on the same turntable.

Titan Direct vs. Avenger Direct

The Avenger Direct establishes VPI's high-performance direct-drive platform in the versatile Avenger chassis.

The Titan Direct takes that concept further with an improved double-stack chassis, magnetic direct-drive architecture, air-suspension isolation and additional resonance-control technology.

Both are serious reference turntables. The Titan Direct is VPI's effort to extract everything possible from the concept.
