The VPI HW-40 was created to celebrate VPI's 40th anniversary and represents one of the company's most ambitious approaches to analog playback. Rather than using the belt-drive architecture found throughout much of the VPI lineup, the HW-40 employs an advanced high-torque direct-drive motor, a massive aluminum platter, sophisticated speed-control system, integrated isolation, and VPI's 12-inch JMW Fatboy Gimbal tonearm.

The design evolved from VPI's acclaimed Classic Direct and incorporates advances in motion-control electronics, materials, vibration management, and tonearm engineering. Reference Direct-Drive Motor

At the heart of the HW-40 is VPI's three-phase brushless direct-drive motor.

Unlike a belt-drive system, the platter is directly coupled to the motor assembly. VPI developed the system specifically to combine high torque with extremely smooth rotation and low motor noise.

The ironless coil architecture avoids the magnetic materials associated with conventional motor cogging, while overlapping V-shaped coils further contribute to smooth operation.

VPI specifies 2.68 Nm/sec of motor torque, enough to bring the massive platter to operating speed—or stop it—in approximately one second. VPI Industries

2,500-Pulse Speed Monitoring

Direct drive is only as good as its control system.

The HW-40 uses a ring encoder generating 2,500 pulses per revolution, continuously feeding rotational information to its motion-control electronics.

VPI developed the control system using technology derived from precision industrial motion-control applications. Motor behavior was then fine-tuned while monitoring the turntable itself using unmodulated test records.

The objective is simple: exceptional speed stability without allowing the motor-control system to become audible through the cartridge. VPI Industries

Massive Aluminum Platter

The HW-40's 12-inch platter is machined from aluminum and weighs approximately 25 pounds according to VPI's current product specifications.

That substantial rotating mass works with the high-torque direct-drive system to provide an exceptionally stable platform for the record.

The platter and motor assembly are engineered as an integrated system rather than treating the motor, bearing, and platter as unrelated components. This helps control vibration while maintaining the speed stability fundamental to accurate pitch, timing, and musical decay. VPI Industries

JMW-12 Fatboy Gimbal Tonearm

The HW-40 includes VPI's 12-inch JMW Fatboy Gimbal tonearm.

Its 3D-printed arm structure uses a geometry developed to control resonance while maintaining low effective mass and structural rigidity. The full gimbal bearing provides stable movement in both planes, while the 12-inch effective arm length reduces tracking-angle error across the record.

The HW-40 Anniversary version also incorporates Nordost Reference internal tonearm wiring.

VPI's on-the-fly VTA system allows vertical tracking angle to be adjusted precisely, giving experienced analog listeners the ability to optimize cartridge geometry for different records and cartridge configurations. VPI Industries

Isolation Engineered Into the Turntable

A reference cartridge responds to microscopic movement, making mechanical isolation critical.

VPI spent approximately two years developing the HW-40's isolation system. The design combines mass loading, structural reinforcement, selective damping, composite absorption materials, and low-durometer horizontal isolators.

Rather than relying entirely on an external isolation platform, the HW-40 addresses both vertical and horizontal vibration within the turntable itself.

The substantial aluminum chassis adds another layer of rigidity and damping, while the anniversary edition's solid Black Walnut side panels give the HW-40 a distinctive appearance worthy of its position in VPI's history. VPI Industries

Everything Integrated Into One Chassis

Despite its sophisticated electronics, the HW-40 doesn't require a collection of external motor controllers and power-supply boxes.

VPI houses the motor-control electronics and power supply internally, keeping the installation clean and allowing the turntable to function as a complete analog platform.

Dedicated controls provide direct selection of 33⅓ and 45 RPM, and a removable hinged dustcover is included. VPI Industries

The HW-40 reflects VPI's long-standing commitment to American turntable manufacturing.
