The T+A M 40 HV is a reference-grade monaural power amplifier combining vacuum tube input circuitry, proprietary High Voltage (HV) transistor amplification and an exceptionally powerful solid-state output stage. Developed as part of T+A's Anniversary Edition, the M 40 HV delivers 1,000 watts into 4 ohms and 550 watts into 8 ohms, with the flexibility to prioritize high-current Class A operation or maximum output power.

At the heart of its hybrid architecture are carefully selected 6SN7 vacuum tubes, a fully symmetrical Class A input stage, high-voltage J-FET amplification and an output section incorporating 20 high-performance ring-emitter bipolar transistors.

A substantial 180,000µF power supply reservoir, intelligent thermal management and precision aluminum construction provide the foundation for demanding reference loudspeaker systems.

Designed and manufactured in Germany, the M 40 HV represents T+A's integration of traditional vacuum tube engineering with modern high-power transistor technology.

1,000-Watt High Power Mode

The M 40 HV provides exceptional output capability for large, demanding loudspeakers.

In High Power Mode, the amplifier delivers:

  • 550 watts continuous into 8 ohms

  • 1,000 watts continuous into 4 ohms

  • 570 watts peak into 8 ohms

  • 1,070 watts peak into 4 ohms

This substantial power reserve supports demanding dynamic passages, complex orchestral recordings and high-output playback without requiring the amplifier to operate near its maximum capability during ordinary listening.

Each M 40 HV is a monaural amplifier dedicated to one audio channel. A conventional two-channel stereo system requires two units.

Selectable High Current Mode

The M 40 HV offers a second operating configuration optimized for high-current amplification.

In High Current Mode, the amplifier operates with:

Up to 60 watts in pure Class A, followed by Class AB operation up to 250 watts.

This mode allows listeners to select an operating characteristic emphasizing Class A amplification over a substantial portion of the output range.

The ability to switch between High Current and High Power modes makes the M 40 HV particularly versatile when matching amplification to loudspeaker requirements and listening preferences.

Pure Class A 6SN7 Vacuum Tube Input Stage

The M 40 HV uses selected 6SN7 vacuum tubes in a fully symmetrical differential input circuit.

Configured as an all-valve cascode amplifier operating in Class A, this stage provides the initial voltage amplification while preserving the characteristics of T+A's hybrid design.

The tube input section is followed by a discrete High Voltage J-FET amplification stage, allowing the amplifier to combine vacuum tube circuitry with the control and output capability of solid-state electronics.

High Voltage J-FET and MOSFET Driver Architecture

T+A's proprietary High Voltage technology allows the voltage amplification stage to operate with substantial signal headroom.

The J-FET voltage amplifier uses a circuit topology designed around triode-like operating characteristics and pure Class A operation.

MOSFET driver transistors then interface with the high-current output section, providing the electrical drive required by the amplifier's substantial output transistor array.

This multistage hybrid architecture is engineered to achieve low distortion, wide bandwidth and controlled transient response.

Twenty Ring-Emitter Output Transistors

The M 40 HV incorporates 20 high-performance ring-emitter bipolar transistors in its output stage.

These devices provide the current-handling capability required for substantial power delivery into demanding loudspeaker impedances.

The amplifier's specified damping factor greater than 115, 65V/µs slew rate and frequency response extending to 150kHz reflect its emphasis on wide-bandwidth amplification and electrical control.

180,000µF Power Supply and Thermal Management

A substantial 180,000µF power supply reservoir supports the M 40 HV's high-current output stage.

The amplifier incorporates intelligent thermal processor control to manage operating conditions across its selectable amplification modes.

Its massive chassis, extensive heat sinking and carefully organized internal construction support the electrical and thermal requirements of sustained high-power operation.

Each amplifier weighs approximately 115 pounds, making appropriate equipment placement and ventilation essential.

Balanced and Unbalanced Connectivity

The M 40 HV provides multiple analog input configurations for reference preamplifiers.

Connections include balanced 3-pin XLR, balanced 4-pin XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs.

A 5–20V trigger input supports automated power control within compatible audio systems.

The M 40 HV is designed to integrate with T+A HV Series preamplifiers, including the P 3100 HV, while also accommodating compatible high-end preamplifiers from other manufacturers.

Anniversary Edition Aluminum Construction

The M 40 HV features a substantial enclosure designed around mechanical rigidity, thermal stability and electrical shielding.

Its distinctive vertical architecture incorporates extensive black heat sinks and a precision-finished exterior.

Available finishes include Silver 47 and Titanium 64, with black heat sinks. T+A also offers HV Individual customization options.

The M 40 HV combines the visual presence of a reference monoblock amplifier with the sophisticated circuit engineering of T+A's HV Series.
