Advanced Acoustic Resonance Control for High-End Listening Rooms

The Synergistic Research Black Box Carbon is a passive acoustic resonator designed to address low-frequency room resonances in high-performance stereo systems and dedicated listening rooms. Building on the original Black Box, this updated model combines a redesigned internal resonator array, enhanced mechanical resonance control and a more rigid carbon fiber and aluminum chassis.

Unlike conventional absorptive bass traps, the Black Box Carbon uses Synergistic Research's tuned sympathetic resonance technology. Its internal resonators are designed to interact with the room's acoustic energy, with the aim of improving bass definition, reducing perceived congestion and enhancing spatial clarity without introducing large acoustic panels into the listening space.

The new chassis also features bronze contact inserts that allow multiple Black Box units to be stacked, creating additional placement and tuning options for more elaborate acoustic systems.

Redesigned Resonator Array

The Black Box Carbon introduces refinements to the internal resonator array used in the original Synergistic Research Black Box.

The design is based on tuned sympathetic resonance, in which resonators respond to acoustic energy at selected frequencies. Synergistic Research uses this approach to address room resonances and their related harmonics rather than relying exclusively on conventional sound absorption.

According to the manufacturer, the revised array is designed to improve low-frequency articulation and reduce perceived congestion while preserving the natural decay and spatial information of recordings.

Carbon Fiber and Aluminum Chassis

A significant development in the Black Box Carbon is its redesigned chassis, which combines carbon fiber and aluminum.

Drawing on construction techniques used in the company's Voodoo music server and PowerCell 14 power conditioner, Synergistic Research developed a more rigid enclosure intended to better control mechanical vibration.

The updated chassis works together with the refined internal resonator array and UEF material treatments. The manufacturer attributes the design to reduced unwanted mechanical ringing and more controlled interaction with room resonances.

Bronze Contact Inserts for Stackable Acoustic Treatment

The Black Box Carbon introduces bronze contact inserts designed specifically for stacking multiple units.

This provides additional flexibility when expanding an acoustic treatment system. Two Black Box Carbon units can be stacked, or an original Black Box can be placed on top of a Black Box Carbon.

Synergistic Research selected bronze after evaluating different contact materials, citing its preferred balance of resolution and tonal fluidity in the company's listening tests.

The stackable design is particularly useful for owners who already have an original Black Box and want to expand their acoustic treatment without replacing their existing equipment.

Flexible Placement for Stereo Listening Rooms

The Black Box Carbon is designed for flexible placement within a listening room. A single unit can be positioned near the front wall between the main loudspeakers, while additional units can be introduced toward the rear of the room or stacked to expand the treatment system.

Placement is an important part of the process. Room dimensions, speaker positioning, furniture and listening distance all influence the acoustic environment, so the manufacturer encourages experimentation rather than prescribing a single configuration for every installation.

For an existing Synergistic Research acoustic system, the Black Box Carbon can also be used alongside other room-tuning products, including HFTs and FEQ Carbon.
