The Focal Scala Utopia Evo M brings some of Focal's newest driver technology into one of the most recognizable loudspeakers in the Utopia family.

Designed and manufactured in France, the Scala Utopia Evo M is a 3-way reference floorstanding loudspeaker combining Focal's new M-profile W-cone midrange driver, PRISM tweeter technology, redesigned W-cone woofer, TMD suspension, OPC+ crossover and Focus Time architecture.

The result is a loudspeaker engineered to deliver the scale and authority expected from Utopia while remaining remarkably manageable for a speaker capable of true full-range performance.

With 92dB sensitivity, bass extension to 24Hz at -6dB and recommended amplification from 50 to 500 watts, the Scala Utopia Evo M can become the centerpiece of an extraordinary two-channel system.

A New Generation of Scala

Scala has always occupied an interesting position within the Utopia family.

It delivers much of the scale, dynamics and technology associated with Focal's largest reference loudspeakers, but in a form that can work in rooms where the massive Maestro, Stella or Grande Utopia simply isn't practical.

The Scala Utopia Evo M pushes that formula forward with a new generation of Focal acoustic technology.

This isn't simply the previous Scala Utopia Evo with cosmetic changes.

The new Evo M introduces a redesigned driver complement including an M-profile midrange derived from Focal's professional Utopia Main range, a new PRISM high-frequency driver and a completely redesigned W-cone woofer.

M-Profile W Midrange: Technology from the Studio

The midrange is where much of music lives.

Vocals. Guitars. Piano. Strings. The body and texture of instruments.

For the Scala Utopia Evo M, Focal incorporates a 5.1-inch (13cm) reinforced W-cone midrange driver with an M-profile diaphragm and TMD suspension.

The M-profile concept draws from technology developed for Focal's professional Utopia Main studio monitors.

The geometry is designed to increase rigidity and improve control of the diaphragm, contributing to lower distortion and greater transparency.

For the listener, the engineering objective isn't to make the midrange sound more impressive.

It's to make it sound less like a loudspeaker.

PRISM: A New Approach to the Utopia Tweeter

High-frequency reproduction is handled by Focal's 27mm PRISM inverted-dome tweeter with M-profile and IAL2 loading.

The goal is exceptional extension combined with the finesse, speed and low distortion required from a reference loudspeaker.

The Scala Utopia Evo M extends all the way to 40kHz, far beyond the conventional audible range, while the PRISM architecture is designed to deliver greater refinement and coherence through the upper frequencies.

It's not about producing more treble.

It's about producing better treble.

Redesigned W Woofer

At the bottom of the loudspeaker is a completely redesigned 10.6-inch (27cm) W-cone woofer, driven by dual 6.3-inch ferrite magnets.

Focal's W sandwich-cone technology is designed around three characteristics that can be difficult to achieve simultaneously:

Lightness. Rigidity. Damping.

Those qualities allow the woofer to move significant amounts of air while maintaining the speed and control necessary to integrate with the midrange.

The Scala Utopia Evo M reaches down to 27Hz ±3dB, with a low-frequency point of 24Hz at -6dB.

For a loudspeaker of this size, that's serious low-frequency extension.

Focus Time: Point Everything at the Listener

One of the most recognizable elements of a Utopia loudspeaker is its sculpted cabinet architecture.

It isn't shaped that way simply to look dramatic.

Focal's Focus Time architecture positions the individual driver sections so their acoustic output is properly aligned toward the listening position.

Instead of mounting every driver to one conventional flat front baffle, the enclosure geometry helps optimize the relationship between the woofer, midrange and tweeter at the listening position.

The result is a loudspeaker that looks like an acoustic sculpture because, functionally, that's exactly what it is.

OPC+ Crossover: Tune It to the Room

A reference loudspeaker doesn't exist in isolation.

It interacts with the room.

The Scala Utopia Evo M incorporates Focal's OPC+ crossover, providing adjustment of bass and treble response to help optimize the loudspeaker for different rooms, systems and listening environments.

That's particularly important with a loudspeaker capable of reaching into the mid-20Hz region.

Placement, room dimensions, furnishings and listening distance can all influence what you ultimately hear.

The ability to fine-tune the speaker provides another level of system optimization beyond simply moving it around the room.

92dB Sensitivity — But Choose the Amplifier Carefully

The Scala Utopia Evo M has a relatively high 92dB sensitivity, meaning it doesn't require enormous amplifier power simply to produce volume.

Focal recommends amplifiers rated between 50 and 500 watts.

But there's another number worth paying attention to.

The Scala Utopia Evo M has a 6-ohm nominal impedance that drops to 3 ohms minimum.

That means amplifier quality and current delivery matter.

This is exactly the kind of loudspeaker where pairing the system correctly becomes far more important than simply comparing published wattage ratings.

A powerful, stable amplifier capable of controlling the Scala's woofer can make a substantial difference in what the loudspeaker is capable of delivering.

The Scala Utopia Evo M is designed and manufactured in France.

Focal develops and produces its drivers at its facility in Saint-Étienne, while the wooden cabinets are crafted by specialist cabinetmakers in Burgundy.

That vertical approach to manufacturing is a major part of the Utopia story.

Focal isn't simply selecting drivers from a catalog and designing an enclosure around them.

The company controls the development of the drivers, diaphragms, crossover, cabinet architecture and final loudspeaker as a complete system.

A Reference Loudspeaker Without the Grande Utopia Footprint

The Scala Utopia Evo M isn't small.

Each speaker weighs approximately 187 pounds.

But within the world of full-scale reference loudspeakers, its proportions are surprisingly manageable.

At roughly 49 inches tall, Scala can deliver genuine full-range performance without completely dominating the room visually.

And that's one of the reasons we think the Scala is such an interesting model within the Utopia range.

It is big enough to sound big.

But not so big that the room has to be designed around the loudspeaker.
