Audio Research Reference 6SE Line-Stage Preamplifier

The Audio Research Reference 6SE is the company's highest-performance single-chassis line-stage preamplifier, combining classic vacuum-tube architecture with decades of refinement from Audio Research's Reference Series.

At its core is a fully balanced, Class A, zero-feedback circuit built around a single gain stage. Six long-life 6H30 tubes handle the gain section, while a separate 6H30 and 6550WE provide vacuum-tube regulation in the substantial power supply. The design incorporates technology and component developments derived from Audio Research's Reference 160-series and Reference 750SEL power amplifiers.

The result is a preamplifier engineered for transparency, dimensionality, dynamic contrast, and tonal accuracy without sacrificing the natural texture and musical character that define Audio Research's Reference components.

With four balanced XLR inputs, four single-ended RCA inputs, dual main outputs, processor passthrough, and both balanced and single-ended connectivity throughout, the Reference 6SE is designed to become the control center of a truly world-class two-channel system.

Fully Balanced, Class A, Zero Feedback

The Reference 6SE uses a fully balanced signal path operating in Class A with zero global feedback.

Its single-stage topology keeps the signal path direct, while the tube architecture provides the voltage gain and current capability necessary to drive demanding power amplifiers.

Audio Research designed the 6SE to deliver exceptional resolution without becoming clinical. Fine spatial information, harmonic textures, transient detail, and low-level dynamics remain intact, while large-scale musical passages retain their weight and authority.

Reference-Series Vacuum-Tube Architecture

Six 6H30 dual triodes form the Reference 6SE's gain stage.

The power supply receives equally serious attention. A 6550WE tube—more commonly encountered as an output tube in power amplifiers—works alongside another 6H30 to provide vacuum-tube regulation.

Electronically regulated high- and low-voltage supplies, exceptional line regulation, and an automatic 45-second warm-up and brown-out mute system contribute to stable, quiet operation.

This power-supply architecture is fundamental to the Reference 6SE's ability to deliver substantial bass weight, dynamic freedom, and a remarkably low noise floor.

Built Around the Entire System

A reference preamplifier needs to accommodate more than a single source.

The Reference 6SE provides four balanced XLR and four single-ended RCA inputs, along with an assignable processor passthrough for integration into systems that combine dedicated two-channel listening with home theater.

Two sets of main outputs are provided in both XLR and RCA formats, making it easy to accommodate multiple amplifiers or integrate powered subwoofers. A fixed-level record output is also included.

Volume is controlled across 103 steps for precise adjustment, with front-panel access to input selection, mono, phase inversion, mute, menu functions, and power.
