The Ortofon MC Quintet Mono is a moving coil cartridge engineered specifically for mono microgroove vinyl records. Its Nude Elliptical diamond stylus features an 8/18 µm profile designed to track mono LP grooves accurately, including worn records, while helping control surface noise.
Unlike a conventional stereo cartridge, the Quintet Mono uses a strapped output that delivers the same mono signal through both sets of output pins. This allows it to work with a compatible stereo playback system without requiring a dedicated mono phono stage.
The cartridge combines pure 4-nines silver coil wire, a neodymium magnet system, and a durable thermoplastic body. Its low internal impedance supports compatibility with a wide range of appropriately matched moving coil phono stages and step-up transformers.

The MC Quintet Mono is intended for mono microgroove records, including mono LPs from the vinyl era. Its strapped output provides a mono signal to both left and right channels, making it straightforward to integrate into an existing stereo system.
This is not a 78 RPM shellac cartridge. Its 8/18 µm stylus is intended for microgroove vinyl rather than the wider grooves typically found on shellac 78s.
Compatibility & Installation
The Quintet Mono uses standard ½-inch mounting with threaded holes for straightforward installation. Its 0.3 mV output requires a compatible moving coil phono stage or an appropriately matched step-up transformer and phono preamplifier.
Set tracking force to Ortofon’s recommended 2.3 grams and use a load impedance greater than 20 ohms. Confirm tonearm and phono-stage compatibility before installation.
