The Ortofon SPU Meister Silver G MkII combines the classic SPU cartridge design with refinements to its coil windings, stylus, and magnet system. Originally introduced in 1996, the Meister Silver design honors Ortofon engineer Robert Gudmandsen and brings greater detail retrieval to the traditional SPU platform.

The MkII features high-purity, multi-conductor silver coil wire with a purity of 99.9999%, a Nude Elliptical stylus with substantially reduced tip mass, and a revised generator that delivers 0.3 mV output.

Its integrated G-style headshell connects directly to compatible SME-style bayonet tonearms, combining the cartridge and headshell into a single assembly.

What Makes the Meister Silver G MkII Different?

The Meister Silver G MkII retains the integrated headshell and traditional tracking characteristics of the SPU family while introducing three important refinements.

High-purity silver windings

Ortofon uses multi-conductor 6N silver wire in the cartridge coils. This is a defining feature of the Meister Silver design.

Reduced stylus tip mass

The Nude Elliptical stylus has a tip mass more than 50% lower than the previous design. Ortofon attributes improved tracking ability and retrieval of subtle dynamic information to this change.

Revised generator

The updated generator produces 0.3 mV output, compared with the SPU Classic G MkII's 0.2 mV, broadening compatibility with suitable moving coil amplification.

Compatibility & Installation

Important: This is not a standard ½-inch-mount cartridge. The SPU Meister Silver G MkII has an integrated headshell and requires a compatible SME-style bayonet tonearm.

Its 28 g weight and low 8 µm/mN compliance make tonearm compatibility and counterweight capacity particularly important. Ortofon specifies a recommended tracking force of 4.0 grams and a load impedance of 10 ohms.

The cartridge's 0.3 mV output requires a suitable moving coil phono stage or an appropriately matched step-up transformer.
