The Naim NAC 332 is a high-performance analog preamplifier from Naim's New Classic 300 Series, engineered to serve as the control center of a reference two-channel HiFi system. Combining fully discrete analog circuitry, precision resistor-based volume control and extensive connectivity, it offers the flexibility to accommodate multiple high-end audio sources while maintaining a carefully controlled signal path.

Inspired by the volume-control architecture of Naim's flagship Statement amplifier, the NAC 332 uses reed relays and fixed resistors for accurate volume adjustment and channel balance. Eight configurable analog inputs, balanced XLR and RCA outputs, and a dedicated headphone amplifier make it a versatile foundation for an ambitious stereo system.

Statement-Inspired Precision Volume Control

The NAC 332 incorporates a sophisticated volume-control system derived from the architecture developed for Naim's Statement preamplifier.

Instead of relying on a conventional variable potentiometer in the audio signal path, it uses carefully selected fixed resistors switched by reed relays. This arrangement is designed to maintain precise channel balance and consistent performance throughout the volume range.

The large front-panel volume control uses an optical encoder with a precision ball-raced bearing, combining the tactile feel of a traditional control with digitally managed analog volume adjustment.

Adjustable input sensitivity and a configurable maximum volume setting allow the preamplifier to be tailored to different sources and listening environments.

Fully Discrete Analog Circuitry

Every audio stage in the NAC 332 is built around discrete transistor circuitry. Its balanced inputs use Class A buffer stages for the positive and negative signal paths, while the single-ended inputs employ discrete Class A transistor buffers and filtering.

Naim also uses selected through-hole components, including polystyrene capacitors in its analog filtering circuits. Galvanic isolation separates the control electronics from the audio circuitry, reducing the potential for interference between the two sections.

The result is a dedicated analog preamplifier architecture designed to preserve the integrity of signals arriving from high-performance streamers, DACs, phono stages and other source components.

Eight Configurable Analog Inputs

The NAC 332 offers eight analog inputs, accommodating both traditional Naim connections and conventional balanced and single-ended HiFi components.

Two stereo balanced XLR inputs provide connectivity for compatible high-end digital sources and other balanced components. Three stereo RCA inputs and three DIN inputs accommodate additional sources, including compatible Naim equipment.

Each physical input can be assigned to a front-panel input button, simplifying operation in systems with several source components. Input sensitivity can also be configured individually, helping maintain consistent listening levels when switching between sources.

The eight-pin DIN connection supplies power for compatible external phono stages, including the Naim NVC TT.

Dedicated Headphone Amplification

A front-panel 6.35mm headphone output gives the NAC 332 a dedicated private-listening capability.

Its discrete transistor headphone amplifier delivers 1.5 watts into 16 ohms and operates in Class A and Class AB according to output requirements. This provides a convenient way to enjoy connected music sources through compatible headphones without adding a separate headphone amplifier.

For listeners who alternate between loudspeakers and headphones, the NAC 332 integrates both listening options into the same reference system.

Balanced and RCA Preamplifier Outputs

The NAC 332 provides stereo balanced XLR and RCA preamplifier outputs, supporting a variety of power-amplifier configurations.

Its balanced output stage uses Class A circuitry and is designed to accommodate both short and extended interconnect runs. The additional RCA output can be used with a compatible second amplifier or subwoofer, making the NAC 332 suitable for systems that require more than one analog output connection.

The preamplifier is designed to partner with Naim's NAP 350 monoblock power amplifiers and is also compatible with the NAP 250 and other suitable amplification.

NPX 300 Power-Supply Upgrade

The NAC 332 incorporates an internal linear power supply built around a substantial toroidal transformer, with a separate efficient supply for standby operation.

For owners looking to develop their system further, the preamplifier is compatible with the Naim NPX 300 external power supply. Two Burndy connections provide separate power-supply paths for the NAC 332's analog and digital control sections.

This upgrade option allows the NAC 332 to remain the center of a growing New Classic system while providing an additional power-supply configuration for demanding installations.

Seamless New Classic System Integration

The NAC 332 is designed to work closely with Naim's NSS 333 network player and New Classic power amplifiers.

Bidirectional Zigbee communication enables coordinated operation with the NSS 333, while optical control connections provide synchronized standby and lighting control with compatible amplifiers, including the NAP 250 and NAP 350.

The Focal & Naim app, supplied Zigbee remote and front-panel controls provide multiple ways to operate the system. Together, these features allow a multi-component New Classic system to function with the convenience of a more integrated audio setup.
