Overview

Bryston Middle T Active Floorstanding Speakers

Three-way active floorstanding loudspeakers featuring dual 8-inch woofers, external DSP crossover control, and dedicated amplification for every driver section.

The Bryston Middle T Active is a high-performance, Canadian-made floorstanding loudspeaker engineered for exceptional dynamics, low distortion, and precise acoustic control. Its three-way, four-driver design combines dual 8-inch woofers, a dedicated 5.25-inch midrange driver, and a 1-inch tweeter with Bryston's fully active crossover architecture.

Unlike conventional passive speakers, the Middle T Active eliminates the internal passive crossover network. Instead, the Bryston BAX-1 DSP Active Crossover divides the audio signal before amplification, allowing separate amplifier channels to drive the bass, midrange, and treble sections directly.

The result is greater control over frequency response, driver integration, and dynamic performance in a reference-quality loudspeaker system.

Three-Way, Four-Driver Architecture

Each Middle T Active incorporates:

  • 2 × 8-inch woofers for powerful, extended bass

  • 1 × 5.25-inch midrange driver for vocal and instrumental clarity

  • 1 × 1-inch tweeter for detailed high-frequency reproduction

Bryston's custom-designed drivers feature die-cast aluminum baskets, substantial magnet assemblies, and carefully engineered motor systems.

The dual-woofer configuration provides substantial low-frequency output while maintaining the compact proportions of the Middle T cabinet.

True Active Crossover Design

The Middle T Active uses an external Bryston BAX-1 DSP Crossover rather than a conventional passive crossover inside the loudspeaker.

This approach offers several important advantages:

  • Precise digital crossover filtering

  • Independent control of bass, midrange, and treble

  • Improved on-axis and off-axis response

  • Direct amplifier-to-driver connections

  • Reduced losses associated with passive crossover components

  • Greater flexibility in system optimization

By dividing the signal before amplification, Bryston can optimize the acoustic behavior of the complete loudspeaker system with greater precision.

Dedicated Amplification for Every Frequency Range

Each Middle T Active requires three separate amplifier channels: one for the bass section, one for the midrange, and one for the tweeter.

A complete stereo pair therefore requires six amplifier channels.

Bryston recommends pairing the speakers with two 21B³ three-channel power amplifiers, providing one amplifier chassis per loudspeaker.

This configuration allows the amplification to be matched directly to each driver section, delivering greater control and reducing interaction between frequency ranges.

The BAX-1 crossover and external power amplification are required system components.

Deep Bass and Exceptional Dynamics

With two 8-inch woofers per cabinet, the Middle T Active delivers a specified frequency response of 33Hz–22kHz (±3dB).

Maximum output reaches 112dB SPL at one meter, providing the dynamic capability required for demanding orchestral recordings, large-scale rock music, and high-performance home theater systems.

The active architecture helps maintain driver control and minimize compression at elevated listening levels.

Wide Dispersion and Accurate Imaging

Bryston engineers the Middle T Active for balanced sound throughout the listening environment, not simply at one measurement point.

Custom driver development, cabinet vibration analysis, and anechoic chamber testing contribute to its wide-dispersion design and controlled off-axis response.

Combined with DSP crossover optimization, this approach supports stable stereo imaging, consistent tonal balance, and natural reproduction of the recorded acoustic space.

Resonance-Controlled Cabinet Construction

The Middle T Active uses a substantial, acoustically engineered enclosure designed to minimize unwanted cabinet vibration.

At 81 pounds per speaker, the rigid cabinet provides a stable foundation for its four-driver array.

Available wood finishes include Black Ash, Boston Cherry, Walnut, and Espresso Walnut, with custom veneers offered by special order.

Optional extra-large outriggers provide additional floorstanding stability.

Active System Requirements

The Middle T Active is designed for use as part of a complete externally amplified system.

A stereo installation requires two Middle T Active loudspeakers, one Bryston BAX-1 DSP Active Crossover, and six compatible power amplifier channels.

The Bryston 21B³ is the manufacturer's recommended amplification solution, although system configuration should be determined according to the complete installation.

Important: The Middle T Active is not a conventional passive loudspeaker and cannot be operated correctly with a standard two-channel amplifier alone. The BAX-1 and external amplification are not included unless explicitly specified in the selected package.
