Meze Audio 109 PRO Open-Back Dynamic Headphones

The Meze Audio 109 PRO brings the design, comfort and attention to detail Meze is known for into an open-back dynamic headphone that's remarkably easy to live with.

At its heart is a 50mm dynamic driver developed specifically for the 109 PRO, combining a carbon-fiber-reinforced cellulose dome with an ultra-thin beryllium-coated polymer torus.

The result is exactly what a great open-back headphone should be: detailed and spacious without becoming sterile, with excellent dynamics, full-bodied vocals and enough punch to keep the music engaging.

And unlike many audiophile headphones, the 109 PRO doesn't require a massive desktop amplifier just to come alive.

Custom 50mm Dynamic Driver

Meze developed a new 50mm dynamic driver for the 109 PRO, focusing heavily on the materials used throughout the diaphragm assembly.

Rather than relying on a single material to handle the entire frequency range, Meze uses different materials where their individual properties make the most sense.

The result is a driver designed around speed, low distortion, dynamics and natural tonal balance.

Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Cellulose Dome

The center of the diaphragm uses a W-shaped dome constructed from a carbon fiber-reinforced cellulose composite.

The material combines low weight with high rigidity, helping the driver reproduce high-frequency information with clarity and definition while reducing unwanted resonances.

The W-shaped profile further increases structural strength without unnecessarily increasing moving mass.

Beryllium-Coated Ultra-Thin Torus

Surrounding the center dome is an extremely thin semicrystalline polymer torus measuring just:

22 microns

Meze applies a beryllium coating using Physical Vapor Deposition — PVD.

The coating increases stiffness and durability while retaining the low mass necessary for fast transient response.

Precisely formed corrugations in the torus further improve control, while beryllium's damping characteristics help suppress unwanted resonances.

CNC-Machined Aluminum Driver Frame

The diaphragm and neodymium magnet are housed inside a precision CNC-machined aluminum frame.

The rigid structure helps maintain surface flatness while providing the mechanical and thermal stability required for consistent driver performance.

A copper-zinc alloy stabilizer positioned around the membrane further absorbs unwanted vibration and helps reduce distortion.

Truly Open-Back

The 109 PRO was designed from the beginning as an open-back headphone.

Its spider-shaped earcup structure and acoustically transparent grille expose the driver from both sides, allowing air to move freely around the diaphragm.

The result is a more open and spacious presentation with excellent imaging and less of the closed-in feeling that can occur with conventional headphone designs.

Angled Driver Position

Meze positions the driver at a carefully calculated angle and distance relative to the ear.

Rather than simply firing directly toward the side of your head, the driver orientation takes the anatomy of the ear into account.

That positioning contributes to the 109 PRO's natural imaging and helps create a more convincing sense of space around instruments and vocals.

Easy to Drive

The 109 PRO has a nominal impedance of:

40 ohms

Sensitivity is:

112dB SPL/mW at 1kHz

That makes the 109 PRO considerably easier to drive than many high-end headphones.

You can use it with a wide range of portable and desktop sources without needing an enormous headphone amplifier.

But like most good headphones, it will still show you what better electronics can do.

Pair it with a quality DAC and headphone amplifier and you'll hear improvements in bass control, soundstage, dynamics and overall resolution.

5Hz–30kHz Frequency Range

The 109 PRO's 50mm driver has a specified frequency range of:

5Hz–30kHz

Total harmonic distortion is rated at:

Less than 0.1% at 1kHz

The combination of low distortion, fast transient response and open-back construction gives the 109 PRO the clarity and resolution expected from a serious audiophile headphone without losing its musical character.

Real Black Walnut Ear Cups

The 109 PRO uses real black walnut wood earcups.

Because walnut is a natural material, grain and color will vary slightly from headphone to headphone.

The wood is combined with cast zinc, manganese steel, aluminum and vegan leather to create something that feels more like a carefully made piece of HiFi equipment than another mass-produced headphone.

It's unmistakably Meze.

Designed for Long Listening Sessions

Comfort is one of the strongest parts of the 109 PRO.

At only:

375 grams / 13 ounces

it's relatively light for a full-size audiophile headphone.

A self-adjusting headband distributes pressure evenly, while large velour ear cushions surround the ears.

Velour is soft and breathable, reducing heat buildup during extended listening sessions.

The result is a headphone that's easy to leave on for an entire evening.

Fully Serviceable Construction

Meze designs its headphones around long-term ownership, and the 109 PRO follows that philosophy.

The headphone can be disassembled and serviced, allowing individual components to be repaired or replaced rather than treating the entire headphone as disposable.

That's something we like to see in a serious HiFi product.

Where the 109 PRO Fits in the Meze Lineup

The 109 PRO is an excellent entry into Meze's serious open-back headphone lineup.

Unlike the POET, Empyrean II, ELITE and ARTA, the 109 PRO uses a traditional dynamic driver rather than a planar magnetic design.

That's not a downgrade—it's a different approach.

The 109 PRO is lighter, extremely easy to drive and has a lively, natural presentation that makes it an easy headphone to enjoy across a wide range of music.

For someone who wants to step into true audiophile open-back headphones without immediately building a reference-level headphone rig around them, the 109 PRO is one of the most approachable places to start in the Meze lineup.
