The Meitner MA3i combines a high-performance digital-to-analog converter, network music streamer, and precision volume control in one component. Designed and manufactured in Canada, it incorporates digital audio technologies developed by Ed Meitner for EMM Labs' reference converters, including next-generation MDAC2 conversion, MDAT2 signal processing, and MCLK3 asynchronous clocking.

Built as the successor to the award-winning Meitner MA3, the MA3i introduces updated conversion and analog circuitry, improved isolation for USB and network connections, and a more capable streaming platform. Its integrated VControl volume system also allows it to connect directly to a compatible power amplifier, making it possible to build a reference digital playback system without a separate preamplifier.

With support for Roon Ready playback, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz, Spotify Connect, DSD128, DXD, and MQA, the MA3i accommodates both modern streaming services and extensive local music libraries. Balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outputs provide flexibility for integration with a wide range of high-end audio systems.

MDAC2: Fully Discrete 16xDSD Conversion

At the heart of the MA3i is Meitner's next-generation MDAC2 architecture. Rather than relying on a conventional off-the-shelf DAC chip, MDAC2 uses proprietary, fully discrete, dual-differential, single-bit digital-to-analog converters operating at 16xDSD.

This architecture gives Meitner control over the conversion process and draws directly on technologies developed for EMM Labs' flagship digital components. The dual-differential design is paired with a revised analog output stage to form the foundation of the MA3i's playback system.

The MA3i also incorporates updated MDAT2 digital signal processing, which analyzes incoming audio in real time, detects transients, and performs upconversion before digital-to-analog conversion.

Latest-Generation VControl Volume System

The MA3i incorporates the latest generation of Meitner's VControl high-resolution volume technology, derived from the EMM Labs DV2i.

VControl is designed to preserve digital audio resolution across its attenuation range, allowing listeners to adjust playback levels without the conventional compromises associated with some digital volume-control systems.

Combined with the MA3i's balanced and unbalanced analog outputs, VControl allows the unit to function as the digital source and volume controller in a streamlined two-channel system. Connect it directly to a compatible stereo power amplifier or monoblocks, or use it as a dedicated DAC and streamer with an existing preamplifier.

MFAST and MCLK3 Precision Clocking

Accurate digital timing is essential to the MA3i's conversion architecture. Meitner's updated MFAST frequency acquisition system works alongside its proprietary MCLK3 asynchronous clock to reduce the influence of source-related jitter.

MFAST acquires incoming digital signals, while MCLK3 provides the internal timing reference for conversion. This arrangement helps isolate the DAC's performance from timing variations introduced by connected digital transports and other sources.

The MA3i also incorporates redesigned input and power-isolation systems. Advanced filtering and hardware galvanic isolation on its USB and network interfaces help prevent electrical noise from connected computers and network equipment from reaching sensitive audio circuitry.

Integrated High-Resolution Network Streaming

The MA3i features an updated network streaming platform, allowing it to serve as the central digital source for a high-end stereo system. Its Ethernet connection provides access to supported streaming services, local network storage, and compatible music-management platforms.

The integrated streamer supports Roon Ready playback, TIDAL Connect, Spotify Connect, Qobuz, Deezer, and vTuner. UPnP/DLNA compatibility allows access to music stored on a network-attached storage device, while direct USB audio file playback provides another option for local libraries.

This integrated approach eliminates the need for a separate network streamer in many systems, reducing the number of components and digital connections required for high-resolution playback.

Digital Inputs and High-Resolution Format Support

The MA3i provides AES/EBU, coaxial S/PDIF, optical TOSLINK, USB Audio, and Ethernet connections, accommodating digital transports, music servers, computers, and network-based playback.

Its digital inputs support PCM audio up to 24-bit/192kHz and compatible DSD formats. USB Audio and network playback additionally support DSD128 via DoP and DXD at 352.8kHz or 384kHz. Full MQA decoding is supported through USB Audio and Ethernet.

The MA3i's digital input selection makes it suitable for systems combining physical media transports with modern streaming services, allowing both to benefit from the same proprietary conversion and clocking technologies.

Canadian Engineering and Precision Construction

The MA3i is designed and manufactured in Canada, continuing the engineering approach established by Ed Meitner across Meitner Audio and EMM Labs.

Its all-metal chassis features a finely bead-blasted front panel available in silver or black. An internal power-factor-corrected supply supports universal AC input from 90 to 260 volts, while the supplied infrared remote provides convenient control from the listening position.

For professionally integrated systems, the MA3i also includes a serial port for wired remote control.
