Built to Pull More From the Airwaves
Radio reception can vary dramatically from one station to another.
Strong nearby FM signals can overload lesser tuners and create distortion, while weaker stations farther away can become noisy or difficult to receive cleanly.
The MR89 uses McIntosh-designed RF circuitry engineered to deal with both extremes.

Know Exactly What Your Antenna Is Doing
The MR89 includes an advanced signal quality monitor that can display signal strength, multipath and noise information for the incoming broadcast.
That makes it easier to optimize antenna placement instead of relying on guesswork.
The included RAA2 AM antenna uses a 20-foot cable, giving you flexibility to position it where reception is strongest.
For FM reception, antenna selection and placement can make a major difference, particularly in areas with difficult terrain, dense construction or stations located in different directions.

Tools for Making Imperfect Broadcasts More Enjoyable
Not every FM station broadcasts at audiophile quality.
McIntosh built the MR89 with several tools designed to improve the listening experience when the incoming signal isn't ideal.
Stereo Blending can reduce noise on weaker stereo broadcasts, while the newer High Blend mode applies more aggressive blending to the higher frequencies.
Softmute reduces output when the tuner encounters low-quality signals, static or noise between stations.
Highcut can reduce high-frequency content when excessive noise becomes distracting.
Each function offers multiple adjustment levels, allowing you to choose how aggressively the MR89 processes a particular station.
Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, you can tailor the tuner to the quality of the broadcast you're actually receiving.
Tune It Like a Real Tuner
Station tuning is controlled through the MR89's smooth front-panel tuning knob, preserving the tactile experience that made classic tuners so enjoyable to use.
A Seek function is also available from either the front panel or included remote, with adjustable sensitivity available through the setup menus.
The MR89 can store up to 20 AM presets and 20 FM presets, making it easy to move between favorite stations without losing the hands-on appeal of traditional tuning.
RBDS Information on Compatible FM Stations
For U.S. FM stations that transmit Radio Broadcast Data System information, the MR89 can display additional station data such as:
station name, music genre, artist information and song title.
The amount of RBDS information displayed can be adjusted or disabled entirely depending on preference.
It's a small modern convenience that makes traditional FM feel significantly less dated.
McIntosh Output Meters for Radio
It wouldn't be a McIntosh component without meters.
A pair of 60dB output meters displays the left- and right-channel signal being sent from the MR89's analog outputs.
The system volume is still controlled by your preamplifier or integrated amplifier, but the meters give a visual representation of the tuner's actual audio output.
They also provide a great visual indication of stereo activity and separation during a broadcast.
Analog or Digital Connection
The MR89 can integrate with a wide range of audio systems.
It includes both balanced and unbalanced analog outputs, allowing direct connection to a preamplifier or integrated amplifier.
Digital coaxial and optical outputs are also provided for systems where you prefer to send the tuner signal to an external DAC or digital input.
That flexibility makes the MR89 equally comfortable in an all-McIntosh analog system or a more complex modern digital setup.
Built Like a McIntosh Component Should Be
The MR89's design follows the classic McIntosh formula.
