A McIntosh Original, Reborn

The McIntosh ML1 Mk II Loudspeaker brings one of the company's most important designs back to life.

The original ML1 debuted in 1970 as McIntosh's first loudspeaker, combining the unmistakable style of the era with high output capability and powerful bass. More than five decades later, McIntosh has reimagined that original concept for a completely different generation of music systems.

The ML1 Mk II retains the warmth and character of its predecessor with an oiled American Walnut cabinet, vintage-inspired grille and matching stand. Behind that classic exterior, however, is an entirely modern 4-way, five-driver loudspeaker capable of deep 27Hz bass and handling up to 600 watts of amplifier power.

Mid-Century Design Done Properly

The ML1 Mk II doesn't simply borrow a few retro styling cues.

Its cabinet is crafted from solid American Walnut and Walnut veneers, finished in oil with a rich satin appearance that feels appropriate to the original design.

A removable magnetic wood grille incorporates acoustically transparent black knit cloth and subtle metal trim.

McIntosh even eliminated the vertical wooden grille slats found on the original ML1. They looked great, but could interfere with sound reproduction. The new design preserves the vintage character without placing unnecessary material between the drivers and the listener.

It's a great example of McIntosh respecting the past without being constrained by it.

Modern 4-Way Performance

Remove the grille and it becomes obvious that this isn't a reproduction of a 1970 loudspeaker.

The ML1 Mk II uses a sophisticated 4-way architecture with five individual drivers, allowing different portions of the frequency spectrum to be handled by drivers specifically engineered for the job.

McIntosh also positioned the drivers symmetrically.

Unlike the original ML1, there is no dedicated left or right speaker. That simplifies positioning while helping create a more uniform listening area.

A 12-Inch Woofer That Goes Down to 27Hz

The centerpiece of the ML1's low-frequency system is a 12-inch woofer operating in an acoustic-suspension enclosure.

And it produces serious bass.

The ML1 extends down to an impressive 27Hz, giving it the ability to reproduce much of the lowest musical information without depending on a separate subwoofer.

McIntosh uses its patented Low Distortion High Performance (LD/HP®) Magnetic Circuit Design to reduce distortion while increasing power handling and efficiency.

Modern modeling and simulation also allowed McIntosh to achieve the deep bass character associated with the original ML1 without requiring the external equalizer used by the 1970 design.

It's old-school displacement backed by modern engineering.

There's No Replacement for Displacement

There's a reason McIntosh chose a single large 12-inch woofer rather than filling the cabinet with a row of smaller bass drivers.

Surface area matters.

According to McIntosh, the ML1's single 12-inch woofer provides approximately the same cone surface area as four 6-inch woofers.

Moving more air allows the ML1 to generate the kind of deep, physical bass that gives drums, bass guitar, orchestral music and large-scale recordings their proper weight.

This isn't bass designed just to measure well.

It's bass you can feel.

Engineered for Vocals, Imaging and a Wide Listening Area

The ML1's upper-frequency drivers are mounted to a specially machined transition plate that allows the midranges and tweeter to sit close together.

Reducing the physical distance between these drivers helps minimize off-axis lobing and concentrates the frequencies most responsible for imaging into a smaller area.

The plate also provides a rigid foundation that helps reduce unwanted vibration.

McIntosh paid particular attention to the crossover relationship between the ML1's lower and upper midrange drivers, avoiding a crossover point around the critical 1kHz vocal region.

The result is a loudspeaker designed not only for power and scale, but also for clear vocals, precise imaging and natural reproduction.

More Than a One-Chair Speaker

Some high-end loudspeakers can sound spectacular from one precisely positioned seat and noticeably different everywhere else.

The ML1 was engineered for a wider listening area.

Its 4-way configuration, driver arrangement and crossover network work together to maintain consistent performance across a broader area of the room.

That means more than one person can sit down and enjoy a convincing stereo image.

For a speaker inspired by an era when listening to music was often a shared experience, that seems particularly appropriate.

Built to Take Serious Power

The ML1 Mk II can handle up to 600 watts of amplifier power, making it capable of substantial output and dynamic range.

Pair it with powerful McIntosh amplification such as the MC611 or MC462, and the ML1 can produce life-sized scale capable of filling all but the largest listening spaces.

But it doesn't require enormous power to perform.

McIntosh also designed the ML1 to work with lower-powered amplifiers including the MC275, MC1502, MC830 and MC312.

For an even more ambitious system, the ML1's crossover architecture allows for bi-wiring or bi-amping, including pairing it with the McIntosh MC451.

That gives the speaker considerable flexibility as the rest of the system evolves.

A Crossover Built for the Long Haul

McIntosh developed a custom crossover network specifically for the ML1 Mk II.

Over-specified components provide the power handling necessary for demanding playback, while solid-state, self-resetting protection devices help protect the individual drivers.

Separate high- and low-frequency crossover sections also make both bi-wiring and bi-amplification possible.

Power reaches the crossover through McIntosh Solid Cinch™ gold-plated binding posts, designed to securely grip speaker cables while resisting corrosion over time.

The Stand Is Part of the Design

Every ML1 Mk II includes a matching purpose-built stand.

It isn't an afterthought.

The stand positions the speaker at the appropriate height for imaging and listening while completing the vintage-inspired appearance.

A die-cast aluminum McIntosh name badge on the base echoes the classic badges found on some of the company's amplifiers and integrated amplifiers.

Feet are provided for hard floors and spikes for carpeted rooms.

The ML1 can also be positioned directly on the floor or on appropriately sturdy furniture, but for us, the matching stand completes the package.

The Grid's Take on the McIntosh ML1 Mk II

The ML1 Mk II may be one of the coolest speakers McIntosh makes because it doesn't try to hide what it is.

It looks like a big American loudspeaker from the golden age of HiFi—and that's exactly the point.

But calling it a "retro speaker" really undersells it.

Underneath the American Walnut cabinet is a modern 4-way design capable of 27Hz bass, 600 watts of power handling, bi-amping and serious output. The large 12-inch woofer gives music the kind of weight and physical presence that's difficult to duplicate with smaller drivers.

And unlike the original 1970 ML1, you don't need an external equalizer to get that bass performance.
