Overview
McIntosh MI502 2-Channel Digital Amplifier
Massive Power in a Compact 2U Amplifier
The McIntosh MI502 2-Channel Digital Amplifier delivers serious power from a remarkably compact chassis. With 500 watts per channel into 8 Ohms and 800 watts per channel into 4 Ohms, the MI502 brings McIntosh-level amplification to systems where performance, efficiency, and rack space all matter.
Designed for custom installation but powerful enough for demanding dedicated systems, the MI502 can drive main theater speakers, passive in-wall subwoofers, outdoor speakers, distributed audio zones, or a high-performance stereo system.
500 Watts per Channel—and 800 Into 4 Ohms
At the heart of the MI502 are highly advanced closed-loop Class D switching amplifiers backed by robust power supplies.
The result is substantial output capability:
500 Watts per channel into 8 Ohms
800 Watts per channel into 4 Ohms
That level of power makes the MI502 a very different proposition from a conventional multi-room amplifier. It can be paired with large, demanding loudspeakers and used in applications where dynamic headroom and control are essential.
Its Class D architecture also delivers that performance with excellent efficiency. The MI502 requires no cooling fans during normal operation, helping keep both listening rooms and centralized equipment racks quiet.
One Amplifier, Plenty of Possibilities
The MI502's two-channel architecture makes it exceptionally flexible.
In a home theater, it can power the front left and right speakers, leaving a multi-channel amplifier to handle the center, surrounds, and height channels.
It can also provide amplification for two passive in-wall subwoofers, creating a powerful low-frequency solution without placing conventional powered subwoofers in the room.
Two MI502 amplifiers could be configured to power the three front theater channels plus a passive subwoofer. Multiple MI502s can also be stacked in a centralized rack for high-powered distributed audio throughout a home.
And for outdoor entertainment spaces, its output gives an appropriately matched pair of outdoor speakers plenty of available power.
A Serious Option for Two-Channel Audio
Despite its custom-install focus, the MI502 shouldn't be overlooked as a dedicated stereo power amplifier.
With 500 watts per channel into 8 Ohms and balanced inputs, it offers an enormous amount of power from just 2U of rack space.
That makes it particularly interesting for systems where traditional full-size power amplifiers aren't practical—or where the amplifier will be hidden in a remote equipment rack while the listening room remains clean and uncluttered.
Pair it with a McIntosh preamplifier or streaming preamplifier and the MI502 can become the muscle behind a very serious two-channel system.
Balanced Connectivity and McIntosh Protection
The MI502 includes both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs, making it easy to integrate with McIntosh preamplifiers, A/V processors, and other source components.
McIntosh 5-way binding posts provide secure connections for the loudspeakers or passive subwoofers.
The amplifier also incorporates McIntosh protection and system-management technologies designed to protect both the amplifier and connected speakers while simplifying integration into professionally installed systems.
Built for the Equipment Rack
The MI502 occupies just 2U of rack space, and removable rack-mounting brackets are included.
That compact footprint becomes particularly valuable when several MI502 amplifiers are used together. A system can deliver thousands of watts of McIntosh amplification without requiring an enormous equipment rack.
Even though it may spend its life behind the scenes, McIntosh didn't make the MI502 anonymous.
The front panel features two traditional blue McIntosh Watt meters, one for each channel, along with multi-color channel-status indicators. The black-glass faceplate, illuminated McIntosh logo, and silver trim complete the familiar look.
The Grid's Take on the McIntosh MI502
The MI502 is essentially a problem solver with a huge amount of power.
Need 500 watts per channel for the front speakers in a theater? It does it. Need to drive passive architectural subwoofers? That's another excellent application. Need serious amplification for outdoor speakers or a remote stereo zone? The MI502 fits there too.
What makes it especially useful for custom systems is the combination of 500 watts into 8 Ohms, 800 watts into 4 Ohms, a fanless Class D design, balanced inputs, and a 2U chassis.
You get the output capability of a large power amplifier without sacrificing valuable rack space.
At The Grid HiFi & Home Theater, we can integrate the MI502 into a complete two-channel, home theater, distributed audio, outdoor audio, or custom-installed system and properly match it with the right speakers, preamplifier, processor, control system, and system architecture.
