McIntosh MI128 8-Channel Digital Amplifier

Serious Power for Distributed Audio, Theater, and Stereo Systems

The McIntosh MI128 8-Channel Digital Amplifier is built for installations that need flexibility without giving up real amplifier performance.

With eight channels of Class D amplification, the MI128 can be used for whole-home audio, multi-room systems, home theater, or even dedicated stereo applications. It delivers 120 watts per channel into 8 Ohms or 150 watts per channel into 4 Ohms, giving it considerably more output capability than a typical distributed-audio amplifier.

Eight Channels of McIntosh Power

The MI128 uses highly efficient closed-loop digital switching amplifiers backed by robust power supplies to maintain strong, controlled output across all channels.

Because it is Class D, the amplifier runs efficiently enough that it does not require cooling fans under normal operating conditions. That is especially useful in equipment racks where heat, noise, and long-term reliability all matter.

Multi-color LED indicators on the front panel give quick visual confirmation of each channel’s operating status.

Flexible Enough for More Than Whole-Home Audio

A lot of multi-channel amplifiers are designed for one purpose. The MI128 is more adaptable.

Eight channels allow it to power:

  • Four stereo zones in a distributed audio system
  • Multiple home theater channels
  • Bi-amplified speaker configurations
  • Separate stereo systems
  • A mix of stereo and mono zones

That makes the MI128 a strong choice when the system may evolve over time or when a single amplifier needs to serve several different roles.

Installer-Friendly Connectivity

Each amplifier channel includes an unbalanced analog input and a 2-pole Phoenix-style push-in speaker connection.

Rear-panel volume controls allow each channel to be individually balanced during setup, which is especially helpful when different rooms use different speaker types or require different output levels.

The MI128 also includes two digital inputs, supporting either coaxial or optical connections. These digital signals can be bussed across multiple amplifier channels, making it easy to distribute one source to several zones.

Built-in channel summing also allows stereo sources to be converted to mono where needed.

BUS Connections Make Expansion Simple

McIntosh includes BUS inputs and outputs to make signal distribution across multiple channels—or even multiple MI128 amplifiers—much easier.

This is particularly useful in larger systems where the same source may need to feed several rooms or amplifiers without relying on complicated external splitters.

Individual channel inputs remain available when each room or channel requires its own dedicated source.

Power Guard and Sentry Monitor Protection

The MI128 also incorporates two of McIntosh’s core protection technologies.

Power Guard monitors the signal to help prevent amplifier clipping from being passed to connected speakers. This reduces the risk of harsh distortion and potential speaker damage if the system is driven too hard.

Sentry Monitor provides short-circuit protection by disengaging the output stage if current rises beyond safe operating limits. Once operating conditions return to normal, the protection circuit automatically resets.

In a whole-home or custom-installation environment where the amplifier may be powering many speakers for long periods, that added protection matters.

Smart Power Management

The MI128 supports 12-volt triggering for integration with compatible control systems and source components.

It also includes automatic signal sensing. If no input signal is detected for a set period, the amplifier can power itself down. When audio is detected again, it can automatically turn back on.

That makes the MI128 well suited to systems that need to operate quietly and efficiently in the background without requiring constant manual control.

Built for the Rack

The MI128 fits into a compact 2U rack space, with removable rack ears included.

That makes it easy to integrate into professionally designed equipment racks without consuming excessive space, while the fanless design helps keep the rack quieter.

If rack mounting is not required, the ears can be removed for conventional shelf placement.

Despite its installation-focused design, the MI128 still looks unmistakably McIntosh, with a black glass front panel, illuminated McIntosh logo, silver trim, and classic McIntosh styling.

The Grid's Take on the McIntosh MI128

The MI128 is the better choice when distributed audio needs more muscle.

Compared with lower-powered multi-zone amplifiers, 120 watts per channel into 8 Ohms gives an installer far more freedom when choosing architectural speakers, outdoor speakers, or more demanding loudspeakers.

We also like that it isn't locked into one application. The same amplifier can handle four stereo zones, serve as part of a theater system, power a secondary listening room, or be integrated into a larger custom installation.

The combination of eight channels, high output power, digital and analog inputs, BUS connections, Power Guard, Sentry Monitor, and a compact 2U chassis makes the MI128 one of McIntosh's most versatile installation amplifiers.

At The Grid HiFi & Home Theater, we can design and install a complete system around the MI128, including architectural speakers, equipment racks, control systems, networking, wiring, home theater, and whole-home audio.
