Overview
McIntosh MI1250 12-Channel Digital Amplifier
High-Performance McIntosh Audio for the Entire Home
The McIntosh MI1250 12-Channel Digital Amplifier brings McIntosh performance to whole-home and distributed audio systems. With 12 channels of amplification in a compact 2U rack-mountable chassis, it can power multiple rooms while keeping the equipment centralized and out of sight.
Delivering 50 watts per channel into 8 Ohms or 90 watts per channel into 4 Ohms, the MI1250 is an ideal foundation for professionally designed whole-home audio using in-wall, in-ceiling, outdoor, or conventional loudspeakers.
12 Channels. One Compact Amplifier.
With twelve independent channels, a single MI1250 can power up to six stereo audio zones, depending on the system configuration.
McIntosh uses highly efficient closed-loop Class D amplification paired with robust power supplies to deliver clean, controlled power while minimizing heat.
That efficiency has another major advantage in a centralized equipment rack: the MI1250 does not require cooling fans during normal operation. Eliminating fans reduces both mechanical noise and another potential maintenance point in a system designed to operate reliably for years.
Multi-color front-panel LED indicators provide an immediate visual display of individual channel status.
Designed for Custom Installation
The MI1250 was engineered specifically with professional integration in mind.
At only 2U rack height, it can deliver twelve channels of McIntosh amplification without consuming excessive rack space. Removable rack ears are included, so it can also be used outside a conventional equipment rack when the installation requires it.
Each channel includes an unbalanced analog input and 2-pole Phoenix-style push-in speaker connection, making installation and service straightforward.
Individual rear-panel volume controls allow an installer to balance output levels between rooms and speakers during system commissioning.
Digital Inputs and Flexible Signal Distribution
In addition to its analog connections, the MI1250 includes two digital audio inputs, allowing either coaxial or optical connections.
Those digital signals can be bussed for distribution across multiple amplifier channels, simplifying systems where the same source needs to play in several areas.
Built-in channel summing also makes mono distribution easy—particularly useful in rooms where stereo speaker placement isn't practical or in areas such as hallways, kitchens, bathrooms, outdoor spaces, and other distributed-audio zones.
This flexibility allows the MI1250 to adapt to the architecture of the home rather than forcing every room into the same audio configuration.
An Ideal Partner for the McIntosh CR106
The MI1250 becomes especially compelling when paired with the McIntosh CR106 6-Zone Preamplifier.
The CR106 handles source selection, zone control, volume, and system management, while the MI1250 provides the twelve channels of amplification needed to power up to six stereo zones.
Add McIntosh architectural speakers such as the WS500, WS300, or CS200, and you have the foundation for a fully integrated McIntosh whole-home audio system.
Larger installations can expand beyond a single amplifier as additional rooms and zones are added.
McIntosh Performance Without Filling Every Room With Equipment
A properly designed distributed audio system shouldn't require an amplifier or collection of components sitting in every room.
The MI1250 allows amplification to remain centralized in the equipment rack while speakers are discreetly integrated throughout the home.
That gives the homeowner a cleaner installation while allowing the integrator to keep the critical electronics together for easier wiring, ventilation, system management, and future service.
And despite being designed primarily for installation, the MI1250 still looks unmistakably McIntosh, with its black-glass front panel, illuminated McIntosh logo, silver trim, and familiar chassis design.
The Grid's Take on the McIntosh MI1250
The MI1250 is where McIntosh makes a lot of sense for whole-home audio.
Distributed audio is often treated as a secondary system—good enough for background music but not expected to deliver the same quality as the main listening room. The MI1250 is designed for homeowners who don't want to make that compromise.
Twelve channels, compact 2U packaging, fanless Class D operation, digital and analog connectivity, channel summing, and individual level adjustment give an integrator the tools needed to design the system correctly without wasting rack space.
We particularly like the CR106 and MI1250 combination. The CR106 provides six-zone control while the MI1250 supplies exactly twelve channels of amplification, creating a clean McIntosh platform for a six-zone stereo system.
At The Grid HiFi & Home Theater, we can design a complete McIntosh distributed audio system around the MI1250, including system engineering, architectural speakers, subwoofers, equipment racks, networking, control, wiring, and professional installation.
