Overview
McIntosh MHA200 Vacuum Tube Headphone Amplifier
McIntosh Tube Amplification, Built for Headphones
The McIntosh MHA200 Vacuum Tube Headphone Amplifier brings the company’s legendary vacuum tube engineering into a compact amplifier designed specifically for serious headphone listening.
Using a pair of 12AT7 input tubes and 12BH7A power tubes, along with McIntosh Unity Coupled Circuit output transformers, the MHA200 is built to drive a wide range of headphones while preserving the smooth, dimensional presentation that has made McIntosh tube amplifiers so recognizable.
It is compact enough to sit near your listening position, but engineered with the same principles found in full-size McIntosh tube amplifiers.
Unity Coupled Circuit Technology
The MHA200 uses McIntosh’s Unity Coupled Circuit, the transformer-based output technology that dates back to the company’s earliest amplifiers.
Here, that technology has been adapted specifically for headphones.
The output transformers provide four selectable impedance ranges:
32–100 Ohms, 100–250 Ohms, 250–600 Ohms, and 600–1,000 Ohms
Instead of forcing the amplifier’s input stage to compensate for different headphone loads, the transformer windings help ensure that the MHA200 can deliver its available power effectively across a broad range of headphone impedances.
A front-panel LOAD control lets you quickly select the appropriate range for your headphones.
Vacuum Tube Signal Path
The tube complement is simple and purposeful.
A pair of 12AT7 tubes handles voltage amplification, while a pair of 12BH7A tubes provides the output power needed to drive the headphones.
McIntosh designed the amplifier around low distortion and clean power delivery rather than simply using tubes for visual appeal.
A custom toroidal power transformer helps reduce mechanical hum and unwanted magnetic interference, contributing to the quiet background required for serious headphone listening.
Balanced and Unbalanced Headphone Connections
The MHA200 accommodates a wide variety of headphone cable configurations.
Headphone outputs include:
- Dual 3-pin XLR connectors for separate left and right balanced connections
- One 4-pin XLR balanced stereo output
- One 1/4-inch stereo headphone output
That gives owners of high-end balanced headphones the ability to connect directly without adapters while still supporting traditional 1/4-inch headphone cables.
On the input side, the MHA200 provides both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs.
The balanced inputs are particularly useful if you want the amplifier positioned close to your chair while the source equipment remains across the room in a rack. Long balanced cable runs can be used while helping minimize noise and signal degradation.
Use It With or Without a Preamplifier
The MHA200 can work in more than one type of system.
If your DAC, streamer, CD player, or other source has a fixed-level output, the MHA200’s VOLUME control can be used to control listening level directly.
If you are connecting it to a preamplifier or another source with variable output, the MHA200 volume control can be set to its Unity Gain position, allowing the upstream component to handle volume.
That flexibility makes the MHA200 equally comfortable as a standalone headphone amplifier or as part of a larger McIntosh audio system.
Compact Size, Full McIntosh Presence
At just over 6 inches wide, the MHA200 occupies far less space than a traditional full-width component.
Its size makes desktop, side-table, or near-listening-position placement practical, but visually it is unmistakably McIntosh.
The mirror-polished stainless steel chassis, exposed vacuum tubes, and vintage die-cast McIntosh badge give it the appearance of a miniature McIntosh tube power amplifier.
A protective tube cover is included, and Power Control connections allow the MHA200 to power on and off in synchronization with compatible McIntosh components.
The Grid's Take on the McIntosh MHA200
The MHA200 is not just a conventional headphone amp with tubes added to it.
The reason it stands out is the way McIntosh adapted its traditional output-transformer technology specifically for headphones.
The selectable impedance ranges make it useful with everything from many modern low-impedance headphones to demanding high-impedance designs, while the balanced connections give owners of premium headphones the connectivity they are likely to want.
We also like how simple the MHA200 remains. There is no DAC, streamer, or unnecessary digital section built in. You choose the source and headphones you want, and the MHA200 focuses on one job: vacuum tube headphone amplification.
For a listener building a dedicated high-end headphone system—or adding serious headphone playback to an existing McIntosh setup—the MHA200 is one of the most distinctive ways to do it.
At The Grid HiFi & Home Theater, we can help match the MHA200 with the right headphones, DAC, streamer, source components, and cabling for your listening system.
