Bring Modern Digital Audio Into Your McIntosh System
The McIntosh MDA200 D/A Converter (DAC) is designed for listeners who want to add current digital playback capabilities to an existing audio system without replacing the rest of their electronics.
It can bring high-resolution digital music into an otherwise analog system, replace an older DAC that has fallen behind current formats and connectivity, or serve as the digital control center in a system built entirely around digital sources.
At its core is McIntosh's DA2 Digital Audio Module, giving the MDA200 a broad range of digital inputs, high-resolution playback support and a level of flexibility that makes it easy to integrate into systems both new and old.
Powered by the McIntosh DA2 Digital Audio Module
The heart of the MDA200 is the same DA2 Digital Audio Module used throughout many of McIntosh's current preamplifiers and integrated amplifiers.
The DA2 uses a Quad Balanced, 8-channel, 32-bit DAC architecture designed to provide improved dynamic range and lower total harmonic distortion.
For high-resolution music, the USB input supports native DSD up to DSD512 and DXD up to 384kHz, while the coaxial and optical inputs support digital audio up to 24-bit/192kHz.
The result is a serious digital source component capable of extracting substantially more from modern high-resolution recordings and streaming sources.
Seven Digital Inputs
The MDA200 gives you plenty of ways to connect digital sources.
The DA2 module includes two coaxial inputs, two optical inputs, USB, McIntosh MCT and HDMI ARC.
That means one component can accommodate everything from a computer or music server to a television, CD transport and other digital sources.
For owners of McIntosh MCT-series SACD/CD transports, the proprietary MCT connection provides a dedicated path for digital audio between compatible McIntosh components.
HDMI ARC Brings Your TV Into the HiFi System
One of the most practical features of the MDA200 is its audio-only HDMI ARC input.
Connect a compatible television and the MDA200 allows your main stereo system to handle TV and movie audio instead of relying on the television's internal speakers or a separate soundbar.
The DA2 supports popular multichannel formats from Dolby and DTS, converting them to two-channel audio for playback through a stereo system.
For someone who already owns a serious two-channel setup, this is an elegant way to make that system do double duty for television and movies.
Roon Tested
The DA2 has earned Roon Tested designation from Roon Labs.
For listeners with large digital music libraries or Roon-based streaming systems, that provides added confidence that the MDA200 has been evaluated for compatibility with Roon across a variety of computers and operating systems.
It makes the MDA200 particularly attractive for systems where local digital libraries and high-resolution streaming are central to the listening experience.
Fixed or Variable Output
The MDA200 normally operates as a traditional DAC with a fixed analog output, allowing it to connect to a preamplifier or integrated amplifier.
But McIntosh also gives it a second role.
The output can be switched to variable mode, allowing the MDA200 to connect directly to a power amplifier in a system that uses only digital sources.
In that configuration, the MDA200 effectively becomes a digital preamplifier and DAC in one component.
Volume can then be controlled from the front-panel adjustment knob or the included remote control.
For a streamlined digital system, that can eliminate an entire component from the signal path.
Balanced and Unbalanced Analog Outputs
The MDA200 includes both balanced and unbalanced analog outputs, making it easy to integrate with a wide range of amplifiers, preamplifiers and integrated amplifiers.
Use the balanced outputs with compatible McIntosh electronics for a fully balanced connection, or use the unbalanced outputs when integrating the MDA200 with other equipment.
That flexibility makes it equally useful in a modern McIntosh stack or as an upgrade to a much older audio system.
Designed With the Future in Mind
Digital technology changes much faster than traditional analog audio components.
McIntosh addresses that by making the DA2 module replaceable.
If McIntosh introduces a compatible newer Digital Audio Module in the future, the DA2 inside the MDA200 can potentially be replaced rather than requiring the entire component to be discarded.

The idea is to make the MDA200 a long-term part of the system rather than a disposable digital accessory.
Classic McIntosh Design
The MDA200 looks exactly at home alongside other McIntosh components.
The front panel combines the familiar black glass faceplate, illuminated McIntosh logo, rotary controls and custom-machined aluminum end caps.
An easy-to-read display provides source and operating information and offers adjustable brightness.
On the rear panel, Power Control and data connections allow the MDA200 to integrate more completely with compatible McIntosh systems.

The MDA200 makes a lot of sense for someone who already owns a great analog system and doesn't want to replace it just to get modern digital capability.
That's really its strength.
You can add USB high-resolution audio, HDMI ARC for the TV, digital sources and McIntosh MCT connectivity to an existing system while keeping the amplifier and preamplifier you already love.
We also like the variable-output option.
If the system is completely digital, the MDA200 can go directly into a power amplifier and act as the system's DAC and volume control. That creates a very clean, straightforward signal path.
