Few amplifiers can claim a history like the McIntosh MC3500 Mk II Vacuum Tube Amplifier.

The original MC3500 helped power the sound system at the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair, putting McIntosh amplification behind one of the most famous live music events in history. More than five decades later, McIntosh returned to that design—not simply to reproduce it, but to create a modern reference amplifier that preserves the engineering philosophy and unmistakable character of the original.

McIntosh selected the EL509S because its characteristics are similar to the rugged 6LQ6 "sweep tubes" used in the original MC3500. Those tubes were originally developed for the demanding power requirements of television picture-tube circuitry, and McIntosh engineers found an innovative second life for them in high-powered audio amplification.

The modern EL509S allows the MC3500 Mk II to remain faithful to that philosophy while using components appropriate for a current-production amplifier.

McIntosh also retains an additional feedback loop similar to the original design to improve output-tube linearity.

Fully Balanced Tube Architecture

The output stage is supported by a fully balanced driver section utilizing three 12AX7A tubes and one 12AT7.

Together, these tubes perform the differential input, buffer, voltage amplification, and output-tube driver functions.

All 12 tubes are positioned behind the substantial power and output transformers and protected by a removable 12-gauge stainless steel wire cage with a black powder-coated finish.

The cage is carefully shaped to maintain easy access to the McIntosh Solid Cinch speaker binding posts, so protection doesn't come at the expense of practical installation.

Modern Protection for a Serious Tube Amplifier

The MC3500 Mk II may look back to the late 1960s for inspiration, but its protection systems are thoroughly modern.

McIntosh Power Guard Screen Grid Sensor (SGS) continuously monitors screen-grid current in the output tubes. If current becomes excessive, the system dynamically attenuates the input signal to help keep the tubes operating within safe limits.

This is joined by Sentry Monitor, which monitors output current and shuts the amplifier down if operating conditions exceed safe limits.

These technologies are particularly valuable in an amplifier using eight high-power output tubes and capable of delivering 350 watts continuously.

Built for Reference-Level Systems

Balanced and unbalanced inputs allow the MC3500 Mk II to work with a wide variety of preamplifiers.

It also provides balanced and unbalanced outputs, making more advanced multi-amplifier systems possible. For compatible loudspeakers, the MC3500 Mk II can become part of a bi-amped or tri-amped configuration where separate amplification is dedicated to different frequency sections.

For a conventional stereo system, a pair provides 350 watts of dedicated tube amplification to each loudspeaker.

The DualView Meter Does More Than Show Power

The large center-mounted meter is one of the defining visual features of the MC3500 Mk II.

Based on McIntosh's DualView Power Output Meter concept, its upper scale displays amplifier output in both watts and decibels.

The lower scale serves an entirely different purpose: it displays the amplifier's warm-up progress. When the MC3500 Mk II is switched on, the meter gradually rises toward 100%. Once warm-up is complete, it returns to zero and the amplifier is ready for music.

It's a clever modern function presented through a design element that looks entirely appropriate on a vintage-inspired McIntosh amplifier.

1960s Character, Modern McIntosh Construction

McIntosh went much further than simply adding vintage colors to a modern chassis.

The gold-anodized machined aluminum front panel recalls the appearance of the original MC3500, while a clear glass insert covers the meter and black glass surrounds the controls and illuminated lettering.

Distinctive U-shaped side rails reproduce another functional detail from the original amplifier. On the vintage MC3500, these rails added durability for amplifiers frequently transported for professional use. Even the rear rubber bumpers that allowed the original amplifiers to be temporarily stood upright have been recreated.

Underneath the retro detailing is a mirror-polished stainless steel chassis and the construction expected from a modern McIntosh reference component.

The MC3500 Mk II is one of those rare products where the history actually matters.
