The McIntosh MC303 3-Channel Power Amplifier takes a focused approach to home theater amplification: put serious power behind the three speakers responsible for most of what you hear.

Delivering 300 watts to each of its three channels, the MC303 is designed primarily to power the front left, center, and front right speakers of a high-performance home theater. Thanks to McIntosh Autoformer technology, the full 300 watts is available whether your speakers have a 2, 4, or 8 Ohm impedance.

For a theater built around substantial full-range loudspeakers, the MC303 provides the front soundstage with the same kind of power and control expected from McIntosh's dedicated stereo amplifiers.

Built Around the Front Soundstage

The front three speakers are the foundation of a home theater. Dialogue is anchored to the center channel, while the left and right speakers create the width, scale, music, and much of the impact of the soundtrack.

Rather than dividing its resources across a large number of channels, the MC303 concentrates on those three.

Each receives 300 watts of dedicated McIntosh power, making the MC303 particularly well suited to theaters using large or demanding speakers across the front of the room.

Additional amplifiers can then be selected specifically for the surround and overhead channels, allowing the amplification system to be tailored to the requirements of each speaker.

McIntosh Autoformers: Full Power Into 2, 4 or 8 Ohms

One of the defining technologies of the MC303 is the McIntosh Autoformer.

Unlike amplifiers whose rated output changes significantly depending on speaker impedance, the MC303 can deliver its full 300 watts per channel into 2, 4, or 8 Ohm speakers.

That gives considerably more freedom when designing a theater. The amplifier can be matched to a wide range of loudspeakers without sacrificing its rated output simply because their impedance differs.

For a system that may evolve over time, that flexibility can also make future speaker upgrades easier.

Not Just for Home Theater

Although the MC303 was designed with the front soundstage of a home theater in mind, its three identical high-powered channels open up another interesting application: tri-amplification.

With a compatible loudspeaker that provides separate connections for its frequency sections, one MC303 can dedicate an individual 300-watt amplifier channel to each section of the speaker.

That makes the MC303 an unusual option for ambitious two-channel systems where multiple amplifiers would otherwise be required.

Power Guard and Sentry Monitor

The MC303 incorporates two hallmark McIntosh protection technologies.

Power Guard monitors the amplifier signal and helps prevent the harsh clipping that can occur when an amplifier is overdriven. In addition to preserving sound quality, it helps protect connected loudspeakers from potentially damaging clipped signals.

Sentry Monitor provides fuse-less short-circuit protection. If current exceeds safe operating limits, the output stage is disengaged and automatically returns to normal operation once the condition is corrected.

For an amplifier capable of delivering 300 watts to each of three channels, these technologies provide an important additional layer of protection.

Balanced and Unbalanced Connectivity

The MC303 includes both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs, giving it the flexibility to work with a wide variety of A/V processors and preamplifiers.

For a high-end theater installation, balanced connections are particularly useful when the processor and amplifier are separated by longer cable runs or installed in a centralized equipment rack.

Three Classic McIntosh Watt Meters

Across the front panel are three blue McIntosh Watt meters, providing real-time indication of the power being delivered by each amplifier channel.

The meters can also be switched off when watching a movie, allowing the room to remain completely dark without the blue illumination competing with the screen.

Outside of movie time, they're a major part of the MC303's visual appeal.

The amplifier combines those meters with a polished stainless steel chassis, black-glass front panel, traditional McIntosh controls, and custom-machined aluminum handles.
