High-Power McIntosh Amplification for Serious Home Theater

The McIntosh MC257 7-Channel Power Amplifier is designed to bring the scale, dynamics, and control of McIntosh amplification to a dedicated home theater.

With seven channels of amplification, the MC257 can power an entire conventional surround system from a single chassis or become the foundation of a larger Dolby Atmos or DTS:X theater. Its unique power architecture delivers 200 watts per channel when all seven channels are operating, with output increasing to 250 watts per channel when using the front left, center, and right channels alone.

And unlike many multi-channel amplifiers, the MC257 delivers its full rated power into either 4 or 8 Ohm speakers.

More Power for the Front Soundstage

The front left, center, and right speakers carry much of the dialogue, music, and high-impact effects in a movie soundtrack. McIntosh designed the MC257 to give these critical channels additional capability when configured as a three-channel amplifier.

Using only those front channels, the MC257 delivers 250 watts per channel.

When all seven channels are needed, each receives 200 watts, providing substantial power for a complete surround system.

McIntosh's Dynamic Power Manager (DPM) technology allows the amplifier to deliver its full rated output into either 4 or 8 Ohm speakers, making the MC257 adaptable to a wide variety of theater speaker systems.

Built for Movie Dynamics

Home theater places different demands on an amplifier than conventional music playback. A soundtrack can move from near silence to explosive peaks almost instantly, making dynamic headroom especially important.

McIntosh increased the MC257's filter capacity by 20% compared with its predecessor, helping raise dynamic headroom from 1.7dB to 3.3dB while also improving low-frequency performance.

The result is an amplifier designed to handle sudden effects, large orchestral scores, and demanding bass passages without losing control when the soundtrack gets aggressive.

TripleView Power Output Meter

The centerpiece of the MC257's front panel is McIntosh's TripleView Power Output Meter.

Instead of using three separate meter windows, TripleView places three traditional mechanical McIntosh meters inside a single 15-inch-wide enclosure. Each independently displays the real-time power output of the front left, center, and right channels.

You still get the movement and unmistakable blue illumination of classic McIntosh meters, but in a design created specifically for a multi-channel amplifier.

For dark-room viewing, the meter illumination can also be switched off so it doesn't compete with the screen.

Silent Cooling Without Fans

Five McIntosh Monogrammed Heatsinks are connected to high-current output transistors to dissipate heat efficiently and silently.

No cooling fans are required.

That's an important detail in a dedicated theater, where a quiet room can make fan noise from electronics surprisingly noticeable during quieter scenes.

A specially wound toroidal isolation power transformer further helps minimize unwanted mechanical and electrical noise.

Power Guard and Sentry Monitor

The MC257 incorporates two of McIntosh's proven amplifier protection technologies.

Power Guard monitors the output signal and helps prevent clipping from reaching the speakers when the amplifier is pushed beyond its limits.

Sentry Monitor protects the output stage from unsafe current levels or short-circuit conditions and automatically resets once normal operating conditions return.

Together, they allow the MC257 to deliver the high output required by demanding theater systems while helping protect both the amplifier and connected loudspeakers.

Ready for Larger Dolby Atmos Systems

Seven channels can power a complete traditional theater, but the MC257 is equally useful as the core amplifier in a much larger immersive-audio system.

Pair it with a McIntosh A/V processor and additional multi-channel amplification, and the system can expand to accommodate additional surround and overhead channels for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X configurations.

The MC257 also offers another useful option: in a five-channel theater, the two remaining amplifier channels can be used to power a second audio zone elsewhere in the home.

Balanced and unbalanced inputs for every channel make integration with a wide range of surround processors straightforward.
