The Big Brother to the Legendary MC275

The McIntosh MC1502 Vacuum Tube Amplifier takes the classic McIntosh tube-amplifier formula and gives it substantially more muscle. Delivering 150 watts per channel, the MC1502 combines the visual heritage of the legendary MC275 with enough power to confidently drive a much broader range of high-performance loudspeakers.

It is the direct successor to the MC2152 Limited Edition 70th Anniversary amplifier, retaining the MC2152's audio specifications and performance while returning to a more traditional McIntosh aesthetic.

If the MC275 is the classic, the MC1502 is its considerably more powerful big brother.

150 Watts Per Channel of Tube Power

The MC1502 produces 150 watts per channel, twice the stereo output of the MC275.

More importantly, that full rated output can be delivered into 2, 4, or 8 Ohm speakers thanks to McIntosh's patented Unity Coupled Circuit output transformer technology.

This is a fundamental part of McIntosh amplifier history. The Unity Coupled Circuit dates back to the technology on which the company was founded in 1949 and allows the amplifier to maintain its rated output across different speaker impedances.

For the listener, it means the MC1502 isn't limited to a narrow selection of highly efficient speakers simply because it's a tube amplifier. Its combination of power and output-transformer architecture makes it suitable for a remarkably wide variety of high-end loudspeakers.

Sixteen Vacuum Tubes

The MC1502 uses an impressive 16 vacuum tubes in total.

Eight KT88 output tubes provide the power, with four dedicated to each stereo channel. Another eight small-signal tubes—four 12AX7A and four 12AT7—handle the balanced, input, voltage, and driver stages.

The KT88 sockets incorporate Air-Pipe cooling around their bases to help promote long tube life. The smaller signal tubes use ceramic-base sockets with gold-plated contacts to help protect the electrical connections from atmospheric contamination.

All 16 tubes sit above a mirror-finished stainless steel chassis and are protected by a removable 12-gauge stainless steel wire cage finished in black powder coat.

It's an amplifier that looks every bit as serious as its 150-watt-per-channel output suggests.

Quieter Than a Pair of MC275s

Two MC275 amplifiers operated in mono can also provide 150 watts per channel, but the MC1502 offers an important performance advantage.

The MC1502 has a 112dB signal-to-noise ratio, compared with 105dB for a pair of MC275s configured for the same output.

That exceptionally low noise floor is one of the qualities that separates the MC1502 from the stereotype of vintage tube amplification. This is a modern high-end amplifier designed to provide the character and experience of tubes without accepting excessive noise as part of the bargain.

Unity Coupled Circuit Output Transformers

Three substantial transformer enclosures dominate the rear of the chassis.

Two house the Unity Coupled Circuit output transformers, with the power transformer positioned between them. Each is contained within an extruded enclosure topped with glass displaying its respective wiring diagram.

It's both functional engineering and classic McIntosh theater—an important part of what makes the MC1502 visually distinctive.

Vintage-inspired die-cast aluminum McIntosh badges further connect the amplifier to the company's history, while the polished stainless steel chassis gives the entire design the appearance of a modern interpretation of classic McIntosh.

Modern Protection and Connectivity

The MC1502 includes both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs, allowing it to integrate with modern or traditional preamplifiers.

McIntosh Solid Cinch speaker binding posts provide secure connections for speaker cables, while Power Control input and output connections allow compatible McIntosh components to coordinate power operation automatically.

Sentry Monitor continuously monitors output current and shuts the amplifier down if operating conditions exceed safe limits. If the protection system is activated, the signal tubes flash red to indicate the condition.

These modern conveniences make the MC1502 far easier to live with than the romantic image of a temperamental vintage tube amplifier might suggest.
