McIntosh MA252 Integrated Amplifier

The McIntosh MA252 Integrated Amplifier brings together two very different amplifier technologies in one unmistakably McIntosh design.

As McIntosh's first hybrid integrated amplifier, the MA252 combines a vacuum tube preamplifier with a powerful direct-coupled solid-state output stage. The idea is to capture the dimensionality and character associated with tubes while retaining the control, power, and speaker-driving ability of solid-state amplification.

Its exposed tubes, polished stainless-steel chassis, and styling inspired by the legendary McIntosh MC275 make the MA252 as much a visual centerpiece as an audio component.

McIntosh Hybrid Drive

At the heart of the MA252 is McIntosh Hybrid Drive technology.

The preamplifier section uses two 12AX7A and two 12AT7 vacuum tubes, prominently displayed beneath protective cages. Your music passes through this tube-based preamp stage before reaching the solid-state power amplifier.

The direct-coupled output stage then delivers:

100 watts per channel into 8 ohms
160 watts per channel into 4 ohms

It's a combination that makes the MA252 particularly appealing for someone attracted to tube sound but who doesn't necessarily want a traditional all-tube power amplifier.

You get tubes where they can shape the character of the preamplifier, with solid-state power handling the heavy lifting at the speakers.

Completely Analog by Design

Unlike many modern integrated amplifiers, the MA252 doesn't try to be your streamer, DAC, and amplifier all at once.

It is an all-analog integrated amplifier.

The MA252 provides two unbalanced inputs, one balanced input, and a dedicated Moving Magnet phono input for a compatible turntable.

That makes it a natural foundation for a vinyl-focused system, while an external DAC or network streamer can easily be added for digital music.

There's something appealingly straightforward about that approach: choose your sources, connect your speakers, and let the MA252 concentrate on amplification.

Built-In Moving Magnet Phono Stage

Vinyl listeners can connect a compatible Moving Magnet cartridge directly to the MA252 without adding a separate phono preamplifier.

Combined with its vacuum tube preamp stage, this makes the MA252 an especially interesting centerpiece for an analog-focused system.

And because each of the four inputs can be assigned a custom name, everyday operation can remain simple even as additional sources are added.

Add a Powered Subwoofer

A full-range subwoofer output allows a powered subwoofer to be incorporated into the system.

This gives the MA252 considerably more flexibility when used with smaller bookshelf speakers or in systems where deeper bass and greater low-frequency impact are desired.

It's also useful when building a system gradually. Start with the MA252 and a great pair of speakers, then add a subwoofer later if the room or your listening preferences call for it.

Fine-Tune the Sound

The MA252 includes bass and treble tone controls, allowing adjustments for the room, speakers, recording, or simply personal preference.

The tone controls can also be bypassed when no adjustment is desired.

Input selection, balance, tone settings, and input offset levels can be adjusted from the front panel or included remote, with operating information shown on the integrated OLED display.

Power Guard Meets Vacuum Tubes

The MA252 was the first McIntosh vacuum-tube product able to incorporate the company's patented Power Guard technology thanks to its solid-state output stage.

Power Guard continuously monitors the amplifier's output for overdrive conditions that could result in clipping.

When necessary, the system makes real-time adjustments to help prevent harsh clipping that could potentially damage connected loudspeakers.

McIntosh even turns the protection system into part of the MA252's visual experience: if Power Guard activates, the tubes associated with the affected channel illuminate amber. Once the condition stops, they return to their normal green illumination.

Ready to Play From the Start

McIntosh Monogrammed Heatsinks are connected to high-current output transistors designed to provide full operating performance without the typical warm-up period associated with some amplifier designs.

Switch on the MA252 and the solid-state output section is ready to perform.

A sophisticated control microprocessor manages system operation, while carefully selected audio-grade components handle the signal path.

High Drive Headphone Amplifier

Headphones aren't treated as an afterthought.

The MA252 incorporates McIntosh's High Drive headphone amplifier, giving owners another way to enjoy the system when loudspeaker listening isn't practical.

For a system installed in an office, bedroom, or shared living space, that can make the MA252 considerably more versatile.

A Modern McIntosh With Serious Retro Appeal

Few integrated amplifiers look like the MA252.

Instead of hiding the tubes inside a conventional black enclosure, McIntosh puts them on display above a polished stainless-steel chassis.

Die-cast aluminum McIntosh name badges flank the sides, while the tube cages, illuminated tubes, and exposed architecture borrow heavily from the visual language of classic McIntosh tube amplifiers.

It manages to look vintage and contemporary at the same time.

The MA252 is for someone who wants a little more personality from an integrated amplifier.

The MA5300 is the more conventional all-in-one McIntosh approach, with extensive digital connectivity and a traditional component chassis.

The MA252 goes in another direction.

It's all analog, visibly tube-driven, and intentionally simple. Add a turntable or a good streamer/DAC, connect a pair of speakers, and you have a serious two-channel system without a pile of electronics.

And the hybrid architecture makes a lot of sense. You get the appeal of a vacuum tube preamplifier without giving up the power and speaker control of a 100-watt-per-channel solid-state amplifier.

Then there's the way it looks.
