The MA12000 uses McIntosh Hybrid Drive technology to combine two distinctly different approaches to amplification.

Its preamplifier section uses four 12AX7A vacuum tubes, with two dedicated to each audio channel. From there, the signal enters a powerful solid-state output stage capable of delivering 350 watts per channel.

The goal is the best of both worlds: the tonal character, dimensionality, and musical presentation associated with a tube preamp combined with the speed, control, and enormous power reserves of solid-state amplification.

350 Watts Into 2, 4 or 8 Ohms

McIntosh Autoformers allow the MA12000 to deliver its full rated 350 watts per channel into compatible 2, 4, or 8 ohm loudspeakers.

That gives you tremendous freedom when choosing speakers.

Rather than building a system around what the amplifier can comfortably drive, the MA12000 allows you to select speakers based on the sound, room, and performance you want.

An Analog Front End Worthy of the Amplifier

The MA12000 isn't simply a powerhouse with a few inputs attached.

It includes a serious analog preamplifier section with 10 analog inputs, including balanced and unbalanced line-level connections plus dedicated Moving Magnet and Moving Coil phono inputs.

Both phono stages feature adjustable loading, allowing the amplifier to be better matched to the cartridge in your turntable system.

For vinyl enthusiasts, that means the MA12000 can support a genuinely high-end analog front end without automatically requiring a separate phono preamplifier.

Balanced and unbalanced outputs also provide additional flexibility for expanding the system or sending audio to additional amplification.

DA2 Digital Audio Module

Digital sources are handled by McIntosh's DA2 Digital Audio Module.

The DA2 uses a next-generation Quad Balanced, 8-channel, 32-bit DAC and provides seven digital inputs for connecting modern digital sources.

Through USB, the MA12000 supports native playback up to DSD512 and DXD 384kHz, while its coaxial and optical inputs support high-resolution PCM up to 24-bit/192kHz.

McIntosh's proprietary MCT connection is also included for compatible McIntosh SACD/CD transports.

Most importantly, the DA2 is modular. As McIntosh develops future Digital Audio Modules, the architecture allows the digital section to be upgraded without replacing the MA12000 itself.

On an amplifier intended for long-term ownership, that's an important distinction.

HDMI ARC Makes It the Center of the Room

The DA2 also provides an audio-only HDMI ARC input, allowing a compatible television to become part of the main stereo system.

Movies, concerts, sports, and streaming television can all benefit from the MA12000's amplification and your main loudspeakers instead of relying on a soundbar or television speakers.

Compatible Dolby and DTS multichannel formats are converted for proper two-channel playback.

With CEC enabled on compatible equipment, television power and volume operation can also integrate with the MA12000.

The Autoformers and power transformer are housed beneath a glass-topped enclosure, while five glass panels display key performance information and a detailed system block diagram.

Up front are the signature blue Watt meters, black-glass faceplate, illuminated McIntosh logo, and substantial rotary controls.

Aluminum end caps incorporate handles, while the chassis is constructed from stainless steel polished to a mirror finish.

And then there are the glowing tubes.
