Voice-Matched With McIntosh In-Wall Speakers

Architectural systems often combine several different speaker types.

The CS200 is voice-matched to the McIntosh WS500 and WS300 in-wall loudspeakers, allowing them to be used together while maintaining a consistent tonal character as sound moves through the room.

That is particularly important in home theaters and larger multi-speaker systems.

When the front, surround and overhead speakers share similar voicing, effects and music can move more naturally through the soundfield rather than noticeably changing character from one speaker to another.

A True 3-Way In-Ceiling Design

The CS200 isn't a basic two-driver architectural speaker.

It uses a 3-way design with a dedicated woofer, midrange drivers and tweeter.

An 8-inch woven glass fiber woofer handles low frequencies, while dual inverted Titanium dome midrange drivers and a Titanium dome tweeter reproduce the mid and high frequencies.

Separating those duties allows each driver to concentrate on a more focused part of the audio spectrum.

The result is a more complete, dynamic sound than you might expect from a speaker installed overhead.

Technology Derived From McIntosh Floorstanding Speakers

One of the most interesting things about the CS200 is where some of its drivers come from.

The midrange drivers and tweeter are based on the same designs used in McIntosh's XR50 and XR100 home audio loudspeakers.

That gives the CS200 a direct connection to McIntosh's traditional high-performance speaker designs rather than treating it as a completely separate architectural product line.

For installations where sound quality matters as much as clean aesthetics, that's an important distinction.

Rotating Midrange and Tweeter Array

Ceiling speakers don't always get installed directly above the ideal listening position.

McIntosh addresses that with a rotating midrange and tweeter array.

The array can be aimed toward the primary listening area, allowing the installer to better direct mid and high frequencies where they're needed.

That makes the CS200 considerably more flexible during installation and helps maximize performance in real-world rooms where architectural constraints often dictate speaker placement.

It's especially useful in home theaters where precise sound direction can make a meaningful difference.

An Excellent Home Theater Surround Speaker

The CS200 isn't limited to distributed audio.

It also works extremely well as part of a dedicated home theater system.

When paired with a McIntosh A/V processor and multichannel amplification, the CS200 can be used for surround and overhead applications while maintaining the tonal quality expected from the rest of a premium system.

Its rotating driver array allows the sound to be aimed toward the seating area, while its discreet ceiling installation keeps the theater visually clean.

For a room where you want the speakers to disappear but the surround field to remain immersive, the CS200 makes a lot of sense.

Designed to Disappear

Architectural speakers should be heard, not necessarily seen.

The CS200 uses a magnetically attached grille that is easy to remove and can be painted to match the surrounding ceiling.

With very little visible mounting flange, the installed speaker can blend almost seamlessly into the room.

That makes it especially attractive for high-end residential projects where interior design is just as important as audio performance.

An optional RK200 rough-in kit is also available for new-construction installations.

The Grid's Take on the McIntosh CS200

The CS200 is what we'd use when the client wants architectural speakers but doesn't want architectural-level sound quality.

That's the difference.

A lot of ceiling speakers are designed primarily around convenience and background music. The CS200 takes a much more serious approach with a true 3-way design, adjustable driver array and voicing intended to work with McIntosh's other architectural and traditional loudspeakers.

We particularly like it for two applications.

The first is a premium whole-home audio system, where it can be paired with McIntosh distribution amplifiers and matching WS-series in-wall speakers.

The second is home theater, where the rotating midrange and tweeter array gives us more control over directing sound toward the seating area.
