Overview
McIntosh C49 Stereo Preamplifier
Classic McIntosh Analog Control With an Upgradeable Digital Front End
The McIntosh C49 Stereo Preamplifier brings analog and digital sources together in one highly flexible control center. With 13 total inputs, dedicated Moving Magnet and Moving Coil phono stages, balanced connectivity, a high-resolution DAC, tone controls, and multiple outputs, the C49 can serve as the foundation of a serious two-channel McIntosh system.
Just as importantly, McIntosh designed its digital section to be modular and upgradeable, helping extend the useful life of the C49 as digital audio technology evolves.
13 Inputs for a Complete Audio System
The C49 is built for listeners with more than one way to enjoy music.
Its analog section includes two balanced and three unbalanced line-level inputs, along with separate Moving Magnet and Moving Coil phono inputs for turntables.
Digital sources connect through the factory-installed DA1 Digital Audio Module, which provides two coaxial, two optical, one USB, and one proprietary MCT input for compatible McIntosh SACD/CD transports.
Each of the C49's 13 inputs can be assigned a custom name, making even a large collection of source components easy to navigate.
High-Resolution Digital Audio Built In
The DA1 module uses an 8-channel, 32-bit DAC operating in Quad Balanced mode and supports high-resolution playback up to DSD256 and DXD 384kHz through compatible connections.
That means a computer, digital transport, streamer, or other digital source can connect directly to the C49 without requiring a separate DAC.
More importantly, McIntosh didn't permanently lock the C49 to the digital technology available when it was introduced.
The DA1 can be replaced by McIntosh's dealer-installed DA2 Digital Audio Module, providing a path to newer digital capabilities while retaining the preamplifier itself.
For a component that could remain at the center of a system for many years, that modular approach makes a lot of sense.
Ready for Vinyl
The C49 isn't digital-first at the expense of analog.
Separate Moving Coil and Moving Magnet phono inputs allow compatible turntables to connect directly, making it possible to build a system around both vinyl and digital music without automatically adding an external phono preamplifier.
It's one of the C49's strengths: a turntable, SACD/CD transport, streamer, computer, tuner, and other analog components can all coexist in the same system.
Flexible Outputs for Serious Systems
The C49 provides two balanced variable outputs, two unbalanced variable outputs, and one unbalanced fixed output.
That flexibility becomes especially useful when building larger systems, including configurations with multiple amplifiers or bi-amplified loudspeakers.
McIntosh has designed the output operation so bi-amped systems can be controlled without inadvertently shutting off either the high- or low-frequency amplification.
Bass and treble controls also provide convenient tonal adjustment when a particular recording, speaker, or room needs a little correction.
More Than Two-Channel Music
The C49 can integrate into a larger entertainment system through Home Theater PassThru, allowing the main stereo speakers and power amplifier to become part of a home theater while maintaining a dedicated two-channel signal path for music.
McIntosh Power Control connections can coordinate power operation with compatible McIntosh components, while Data Ports allow control commands to be sent to connected source equipment.
For headphone listening, the C49 includes McIntosh's High Drive headphone amplifier with Headphone Crossfeed Director (HXD), designed to create a more natural presentation when listening through headphones.
The C49 has also received Roon Tested designation for compatibility with appropriate Roon-based digital systems.
The Grid's Take on the McIntosh C49
The C49 is a great example of why a dedicated preamplifier can still be the right center for a serious HiFi system.
It gives you enough connectivity to accommodate almost anything: MM and MC turntables, balanced analog sources, a streamer, computer, disc transport, tuner, external DAC, or other components.
But the feature we particularly like is the modular digital architecture.
Digital formats and connectivity change much faster than analog amplification. By putting the DAC and digital connections on a replaceable module, McIntosh gave C49 owners a way to update that portion of the preamp without replacing the entire component. The availability of the DA2 upgrade for the original DA1 demonstrates exactly why that design matters.
Pair the C49 with the right McIntosh power amplifier and you have a flexible separates system that can accommodate both a serious analog front end and modern digital playback.
At The Grid HiFi & Home Theater, we can help configure the C49 with the right power amplifier, turntable, streamer, disc transport, speakers, and system accessories for your listening space.
