McIntosh C12000 Solid State and Vacuum Tube Preamplifier

C12000ST

McIntosh's Ultimate Two-Chassis Preamplifier (each)

The McIntosh C12000 Preamplifier is built around a simple idea: keep control and power circuitry as far away from the audio signal as possible.

To accomplish that, McIntosh divides the C12000 into two separate chassis. The C12000 Controller (C12000C) handles power control, system communication, and external control functions, while the C12000 Preamplifier (C12000ST) houses the audio connections and signal circuitry.

The two units operate as one, but separating their functions helps minimize electrical interaction and noise. Inside each chassis, the left and right channels are also electrically and mechanically isolated for true dual-mono operation.

For a reference-level two-channel system, this is McIntosh engineering taken to its logical extreme.

Two Chassis. One Purpose: Signal Purity.

The C12000 Controller and Preamplifier are connected by a pair of specially designed, shielded umbilical cables.

Dual isolated power supplies serve the left and right channels, while dual microprocessors handle system control.

By moving control and power functions away from the audio circuitry, McIntosh creates an environment where the preamplifier section can focus almost entirely on preserving the music signal.

This architecture also complements the C12000's fully balanced circuitry, which is designed to match the performance level of McIntosh's Quad Balanced power amplifiers.

12 Analog Inputs and Exceptional Vinyl Flexibility

The C12000 is unapologetically focused on high-end analog playback.

It provides 12 analog inputs: six balanced, four unbalanced, and two phono inputs.

Both phono inputs can be configured for either Moving Coil or Moving Magnet cartridges, rather than being permanently assigned to one cartridge type.

Capacitance, resistance loading, and gain are adjustable, with phono gain available from 40dB to 64dB in 6dB increments.

That makes the C12000 exceptionally adaptable for systems using multiple turntables, multiple tonearms, or different cartridges.

The phono stage itself uses four 12AX7A vacuum tubes in a fully balanced configuration, with two tubes dedicated to each channel and RIAA equalization built into the circuit.

Choose Vacuum Tube or Solid State Output

One of the C12000's most distinctive features is McIntosh Hybrid Drive technology.

Instead of forcing you to choose between a tube preamplifier and a solid-state preamplifier, the C12000 gives you both.

The high-level vacuum tube section uses six tubes, with two 12AT7 tubes and one 12AX7A assigned to each channel. The solid-state output uses a discrete balanced op-amp design.

You can select the output topology based on the rest of the system, the recording, or simply your own preference.

That is more than a novelty. It gives a C12000-based system a degree of voicing flexibility that would normally require owning two separate preamplifiers.

Four Outputs for Complex Reference Systems

The C12000 provides four output options:

  • Balanced vacuum tube output
  • Balanced solid-state output
  • Fixed unbalanced output
  • Programmable unbalanced output that can use either the tube or solid-state stage

That flexibility makes the C12000 ideal for systems involving multiple amplifiers, alternate signal paths, or different listening configurations.

All outputs are driven by discrete amplifiers, and the circuit is designed with high common-mode rejection to reduce noise introduced through interconnects.

High-End Headphone and Theater Integration

The C12000 also includes McIntosh's High Drive headphone amplifier along with selectable Headphone Crossfeed Director (HXD).

HXD is designed to recreate some of the spatial relationship heard from loudspeakers, making headphone playback feel less locked to the left and right ears.

For systems that serve both music and movies, Home Theater PassThru allows the C12000 to integrate into a multichannel home theater while preserving a dedicated two-channel signal path for critical listening.

Built Like a Reference McIntosh Component

Visually, the C12000 makes no attempt to disappear.

Both chassis combine polished stainless steel, brushed black Titanium stainless steel, black-glass front panels, illuminated McIntosh logos, blue meters, and custom-machined aluminum handles.

The two-component presentation gives the system a true reference-level presence while also reflecting the architecture inside.

It's a design that looks appropriate alongside McIntosh's largest power amplifiers and reference source components.

The Grid's Take on the McIntosh C12000

The C12000 is for the listener who doesn't want to compromise between tube and solid-state preamplification—or between simplicity and system flexibility.

Its two-chassis architecture, true dual-mono construction, fully balanced circuitry, configurable phono stages, and separate tube and solid-state outputs give it capabilities very few preamplifiers can match.

The ability to switch between vacuum tube and solid-state outputs is particularly compelling. A system can retain the resolution, control, and transparency of a reference McIntosh preamp while giving the owner another meaningful way to tailor the presentation.

And for vinyl-focused systems, the combination of two highly configurable phono inputs and a fully balanced tube phono stage makes the C12000 especially serious.

This is not simply a larger McIntosh preamplifier. It is designed to sit at the center of a no-compromise two-channel system.

At The Grid HiFi & Home Theater, we can help build a complete C12000-based system around the right McIntosh power amplifiers, turntables, cartridges, digital sources, speakers, and system accessories.
