Overview
MartinLogan Impression ESL 11A Electrostatic Loudspeakers
Complimentary White Glove Delivery • Travel Reimbursement*
The MartinLogan Impression ESL 11A is a Masterpiece Series hybrid electrostatic loudspeaker combining a 44 × 11-inch XStat CLS electrostatic panel with dual powered 8-inch aluminum-cone woofers. Its 484-square-inch electrostatic transducer handles frequencies above 300 Hz, while the active bass system extends response to 29 Hz.
Each woofer is driven by a dedicated 275-watt Class D amplifier, giving every speaker 550 watts of continuous internal bass amplification. 24-bit Vojtko DSP, PoweredForce Forward bass technology, and Anthem Room Correction (ARC) provide precise integration between the electrostatic panel, powered woofers, and listening room.
The result is a full-range MartinLogan electrostatic speaker engineered to combine exceptional transient response, controlled dispersion, deep powered bass, and sophisticated room optimization in a considerably more compact format than the larger Expression ESL 13A.
44 × 11-Inch XStat CLS Electrostatic Panel
The Impression ESL 11A uses MartinLogan's XStat Curvilinear Line Source (CLS) electrostatic transducer, measuring 44 inches high by 11 inches wide with 484 square inches of radiating area.
A single extremely lightweight diaphragm reproduces the frequency range above the 300 Hz crossover rather than dividing the midrange and treble among conventional cone and dome drivers. The diaphragm is driven across its entire surface, minimizing moving mass and allowing exceptionally rapid response to small musical signals.
MartinLogan's CLS curvature provides 30 degrees of horizontal dispersion while retaining the controlled vertical radiation of a 44-inch line source.
MicroPerf, ClearSpar & AirFrame Blade
MartinLogan's MicroPerf stators maximize exposed diaphragm area while maintaining the rigidity required by the electrostatic structure. ClearSpar reinforcement maintains precise panel geometry without significantly obstructing the radiating surface.
The complete XStat panel is supported by the aluminum AirFrame Blade, which provides a rigid mechanical structure while minimizing acoustic obstruction and isolating the electrostatic assembly from vibration generated by the bass enclosure.
Together, XStat, CLS, MicroPerf, ClearSpar, and AirFrame Blade form the core electrostatic architecture of the Impression ESL 11A.
Dipole Electrostatic Radiation
The XStat panel is a true dipole radiator, producing sound from both its front and rear surfaces while largely canceling acoustic energy at its sides.
This controlled radiation reduces early side-wall reflections compared with conventional wide-dispersion loudspeakers and contributes to the precise imaging and spatial presentation associated with properly positioned MartinLogan electrostatics.
Because the rear wave remains part of the listening experience, distance from the wall behind the speaker and correct toe-in are important to achieving optimum performance.
Dual 8-Inch Powered Aluminum Woofers
Two 8-inch high-excursion aluminum-cone woofers handle low frequencies, with each driver operating from its own dedicated Class D amplifier.
The system provides 550 watts of continuous internal bass amplification per speaker, allowing the external amplifier to concentrate primarily on driving the electrostatic panel rather than supplying the substantial power required by the dynamic bass system.
The complete Impression ESL 11A reaches a specified 29 Hz–23 kHz ±3 dB frequency response.
PoweredForce Forward + 24-Bit Vojtko DSP
MartinLogan's PoweredForce Forward system uses the orientation of the dual woofers and controlled phase relationships to reduce bass energy radiating toward the wall behind the loudspeaker.
A 24-bit Vojtko DSP engine manages low-frequency filtering, equalization, phase relationships, and system protection while helping integrate the powered woofers with the XStat panel at the 300 Hz crossover.
The combination improves bass consistency and gives the Impression ESL 11A considerably greater placement flexibility than a conventional passive full-range electrostatic loudspeaker.
Anthem Room Correction
Built-in Anthem Room Correction (ARC) allows the powered bass system to be optimized for the actual listening environment.
ARC measures low-frequency room behavior and creates correction filters for the active woofer section without placing the electrostatic panel's signal path through digital room correction.
Manual bass adjustment is also provided:
- Deep Bass: ±10 dB below 75 Hz
- Mid-Bass: –2 / 0 / +2 dB
The ARC/PBK measurement microphone kit required for calibration is sold separately.
Vojtko Crossover & WBT nextgen Connections
MartinLogan's advanced Vojtko crossover combines a custom-wound audio transformer, air-core inductors, and polypropylene capacitors with the DSP-controlled active bass architecture.
Speaker-level connection is through WBT-0703Cu nextgen 5-way binding posts using gold-plated, nickel-free, non-ferromagnetic pure-copper signal conductors.
Amplifier Matching
The powered woofers reduce the low-frequency load placed on the external amplifier, but the electrostatic panel remains electrically demanding.
The Impression ESL 11A is rated at 4 ohms nominal impedance, dropping to 0.6 ohm at 20 kHz, with 91 dB sensitivity. MartinLogan specifies recommended amplification of 20–550 watts per channel.
For this reason, amplifier quality and stability into low impedance are more meaningful than wattage alone. Proper amplifier matching is an important part of building a high-performance Impression ESL 11A system.
