MartinLogan Focus ESL C18 Electrostatic Center Channel Speaker

The MartinLogan Focus ESL C18 is a Masterpiece Series electrostatic center channel engineered for high-performance home theater installations where both sound quality and placement flexibility matter. It combines an 18-inch-wide XStat CLS electrostatic panel, a Folded Motion tweeter, and dual 6.5-inch aluminum-cone woofers in a passive three-way design reaching down to 50 Hz. MartinLogan, Ltd.

Unlike the floorstanding Illusion ESL C34A, the Focus ESL C18 can be wall-mounted above or below a display, placed on a shelf, or installed on a stand, making true MartinLogan electrostatic performance practical in theaters where a large floorstanding center channel isn't possible.

18-Inch XStat CLS Electrostatic Panel

The Focus ESL C18 uses a 7.5 × 18-inch XStat Curvilinear Line Source (CLS) electrostatic transducer with 135 square inches of radiating area.

Its low-mass electrostatic diaphragm handles the critical midrange, where dialogue, vocals, and much of the information responsible for tonal character and spatial realism reside. The panel incorporates the visual and engineering language of MartinLogan's Masterpiece Series, including MicroPerf stator construction and AirFrame Blade architecture, allowing the Focus ESL C18 to integrate naturally with Masterpiece electrostatic main speakers. MartinLogan, Ltd.

Folded Motion Tweeter

Positioned directly behind the electrostatic panel is a 1 × 1.4-inch Folded Motion tweeter with a much larger 5.25 × 1.75-inch folded diaphragm area.

Its low-mass diaphragm requires very little physical excursion, providing fast high-frequency response while complementing the transient characteristics of the electrostatic midrange. Locating the tweeter behind the XStat panel also helps create a physically coherent acoustic source and seamless front-stage presentation. MartinLogan, Ltd.

Dual 6.5-Inch Aluminum Woofers

Two 6.5-inch cast-basket, high-excursion aluminum-cone woofers provide the low-frequency foundation. Extended-throw motor assemblies and non-resonant asymmetrical chambers allow the passive bass system to reach a specified 50 Hz without requiring the powered woofer architecture used in the larger Illusion ESL C34A. The complete Focus ESL C18 delivers a manufacturer-rated frequency response of 50 Hz–23 kHz ±3 dB.

On-Wall or Off-Wall Installation

Installation flexibility is one of the Focus ESL C18's defining features. MartinLogan includes a heavy-duty adjustable wall-mounting system that allows the center channel to be installed above or below the screen and angled toward the primary listening area.

When mounted flat, the speaker extends only 9.6 inches from the wall. It can also be placed on a shelf or suitable center-channel stand. MartinLogan, Ltd.

A dedicated On-Wall / Off-Wall acoustic contour switch adjusts the speaker's response for boundary effects created by the installation position. This is particularly valuable in custom home theaters where center-channel placement is often dictated by the display, cabinetry, or projection system.

Vojtko Crossover & WBT Connections

The Focus ESL C18 uses MartinLogan's Vojtko-voiced advanced-topology crossover to integrate its electrostatic panel, Folded Motion tweeter, and dynamic woofers at 470 Hz and 3,000 Hz.

The passive network incorporates a custom-wound audio transformer, air-core inductors, low-DCR steel-laminate coils, and polyester capacitors. MartinLogan, Ltd.

Signal connection is through premium WBT-0703Cu nextgen 5-way binding posts, using gold-plated, nickel-free, non-ferromagnetic pure-copper signal conductors.

Amplifier Matching

The Focus ESL C18 has 90 dB sensitivity and a nominal impedance of 4 ohms. MartinLogan's current specifications recommend 50–400 watts per channel and state compatibility with amplifiers rated for 4-, 6-, or 8-ohm loudspeakers. MartinLogan, Ltd.

As with MartinLogan's other electrostatic designs, amplifier quality and stability are important. In a reference home theater, the Focus ESL C18 should be matched to amplification capable of maintaining control and tonal consistency with the left and right Masterpiece Series speakers.
