The MartinLogan ElectroMotion ESL X is the flagship floorstanding loudspeaker in the ElectroMotion Series, combining a large 40 × 8.6-inch XStat CLS electrostatic panel with dual 8-inch high-excursion woofers. 40-Inch XStat CLS Electrostatic Panel

The ElectroMotion ESL X uses MartinLogan's XStat Curvilinear Line Source (CLS) electrostatic transducer, measuring 40 inches high × 8.6 inches wide with 344 square inches of radiating area.

The extremely lightweight electrostatic diaphragm reproduces frequencies above the 400 Hz crossover point, eliminating the need for conventional midrange and tweeter drivers. MicroPerf XStat & AirFrame Technology

MartinLogan developed a thinner-gauge XStat stator specifically for the ElectroMotion Series, increasing the panel's visual transparency while maintaining its electrostatic performance.

The panel is supported by MartinLogan's AirFrame architecture, which combines aluminum and composite materials to increase structural rigidity without obstructing the active diaphragm or interfering with its dipole radiation pattern. MartinLogan, Ltd.

True Dipole Radiation

The ElectroMotion ESL X's electrostatic panel radiates from both its front and rear surfaces, with the two outputs operating in opposite phase. At the sides of the panel, these wavefronts largely cancel.

This dipole radiation pattern reduces energy directed toward the side walls, helping minimize early reflections that can compromise stereo imaging and low-level detail. Rear radiation contributes reflected energy from behind the loudspeaker, making placement and distance from the front wall important parts of system setup. MartinLogan, Ltd.

Dual 8-Inch High-Excursion Woofers

Bass is handled by two 8-inch high-excursion, high-rigidity paper-cone woofers housed in a non-resonant asymmetrical bass-reflex enclosure.

The dual-woofer system provides greater low-frequency output and power handling than the standard ElectroMotion ESL while integrating with the electrostatic panel at 400 Hz. System frequency response is specified at 41 Hz–22 kHz ±3 dB. MartinLogan, Ltd.

Vojtko Crossover

A proprietary Vojtko topology crossover integrates the dynamic bass system with the XStat electrostatic panel.

The passive network uses a custom-wound audio transformer, air-core coils, large steel-laminate inductors, polyester capacitors, and low-DF electrolytic capacitors—component technologies derived from MartinLogan's more expensive electrostatic loudspeakers. MartinLogan, Ltd.

Bi-Wire Connections & Adjustable ETC Spikes

Custom 5-way bi-wire tool-less binding posts provide separate connection capability for the electrostatic and woofer sections.

MartinLogan also supplies adjustable 3/8-16 ETC spikes, allowing the speaker's vertical launch angle to be fine-tuned while improving stability and floor coupling. Removable rubber caps allow the feet to be used on hard flooring. MartinLogan, Ltd.

Amplifier Matching

The ElectroMotion ESL X combines relatively high 91 dB sensitivity with the unusual electrical characteristics of an electrostatic transducer.

Nominal impedance is 6 ohms, falling to 1.6 ohms at 20 kHz. MartinLogan recommends amplification from 20–400 watts per channel and specifies compatibility with amplifiers rated for 4-, 6-, or 8-ohm loudspeakers. MartinLogan, Ltd.

The 1.6-ohm high-frequency impedance makes amplifier stability and current capability important considerations despite the speaker's high sensitivity.
