The MartinLogan ElectroMotion ESL is a hybrid electrostatic floorstanding loudspeaker combining a 34 × 8.6-inch XStat CLS electrostatic panel with an 8-inch high-excursion woofer. 34-Inch XStat CLS Electrostatic Panel

The ElectroMotion ESL uses MartinLogan's XStat Curvilinear Line Source (CLS) electrostatic transducer to reproduce frequencies above the 500 Hz crossover point.

The panel measures 34 inches high × 8.6 inches wide and provides 292 square inches of radiating area. Its extremely low-mass diaphragm replaces conventional midrange and tweeter drivers, while CLS curvature creates 30° horizontal dispersion for a broader listening area. MartinLogan, Ltd.

MicroPerf & AirFrame Technology

MartinLogan's MicroPerf stator design increases the amount of exposed diaphragm surface without increasing panel size. The ElectroMotion ESL also uses a reduced-gauge XStat stator designed to improve visual transparency while maintaining panel performance.

The panel is mounted in MartinLogan's aluminum and composite AirFrame, increasing rigidity while minimizing obstruction of the electrostatic diaphragm and its dipole radiation. MartinLogan, Ltd.

Controlled Dipole Radiation

The XStat panel is a true dipole radiator, producing equal but opposite-phase output from its front and rear surfaces. Acoustic output largely cancels at the sides of the panel, reducing side-wall reflections that can interfere with imaging and low-level detail.

Rear radiation interacts with the wall behind the speaker to contribute depth and spatial information, making speaker placement and toe-in important parts of achieving the ElectroMotion ESL's full performance. MartinLogan, Ltd.

8-Inch High-Excursion Woofer

Low frequencies are reproduced by a custom 8-inch high-excursion, high-rigidity paper-cone woofer with an extended-throw motor assembly.

The driver operates in a non-resonant asymmetrical bass-reflex enclosure and integrates with the electrostatic panel at 500 Hz. The complete loudspeaker has a manufacturer-specified frequency response of 42 Hz–22 kHz ±3 dB. MartinLogan, Ltd.

Vojtko Crossover

MartinLogan's Vojtko topology crossover integrates the dynamic woofer with the electrostatic panel.

The passive network uses a custom-wound audio transformer, air-core coils, large steel-laminate inductors, polyester capacitors, and low-DF electrolytic capacitors, providing the specialized crossover architecture required to combine dynamic and electrostatic transducers. MartinLogan, Ltd.

Amplifier Matching

The ElectroMotion ESL offers relatively high 91 dB sensitivity, but its electrostatic panel presents a more complex load than a conventional dynamic loudspeaker.

Nominal impedance is 6 ohms, falling to 1.6 ohms at 20 kHz. MartinLogan recommends 20–300 watts per channel and specifies compatibility with amplifiers rated for 4-, 6-, or 8-ohm loudspeakers. MartinLogan, Ltd.

The low high-frequency impedance makes amplifier stability important. Proper amplifier matching can have a significant effect on dynamics, tonal balance, and control.
