Overview
MartinLogan Discrete Cinema Soundbar 85 – 3-Channel Passive Soundbar for 85" TVs
The MartinLogan Discrete Cinema Soundbar 85 is a premium three-channel passive LCR soundbar engineered specifically to give 85-inch-class televisions a front soundstage with the scale, clarity, and dynamic capability of a true home theater speaker system. Rather than relying on DSP virtualization or built-in amplification, it houses discrete left, center, and right channels in one ultra-slim aluminum enclosure and connects to a separate AV receiver or amplifier. MartinLogan, Ltd.
At just 2.37 inches deep, the Soundbar 85 integrates 15 drivers—three Gen2 Folded Motion® Tweeters and twelve 4-inch woven-fiberglass midrange/bass drivers—across its 74.1-inch-wide cabinet. MartinLogan rates it at 93 dB sensitivity, 100Hz–25kHz ±3dB frequency response, 4-ohm impedance, and 20–280 watts recommended amplifier power. MartinLogan, Ltd.
True Discrete Left, Center & Right Channels
Unlike a conventional powered soundbar, the Discrete Cinema Soundbar 85 is a passive three-channel loudspeaker system. Left, center, and right channels remain electrically discrete and are driven independently by the connected AV receiver or multichannel amplifier.
This architecture preserves real channel separation for movie soundtracks: dialogue is anchored through the dedicated center channel while music, effects, and spatial information extend across the independent left and right sections. It can serve as the complete front stage of a traditional 5.1, 7.1, Dolby Atmos, or DTS:X home theater system when paired with the appropriate processor, amplification, surrounds, height channels, and subwoofer.
15-Driver Architecture
MartinLogan scales the Motion Discrete Cinema Series according to television size rather than simply making the enclosure longer. The Soundbar 85 is the flagship 85-inch-class model and uses a 15-driver sealed architecture to increase acoustic capability along with physical width. MartinLogan, Ltd.
The array consists of:
3 × Gen2 Folded Motion® Tweeters
12 × 4" Woven Fiberglass Unibody midrange/bass drivers
Each 4-inch driver uses a 1.5-inch high-temperature voice coil, providing the motor capability required for higher-output cinema playback from the low-profile enclosure. MartinLogan, Ltd.
Gen2 Folded Motion® Tweeters
Each discrete channel receives its own 1" × 1.4" Gen2 Folded Motion Tweeter (FMT). The folded diaphragm itself measures 5.25" × 1.75", creating a substantially larger radiating surface than the tweeter's compact frontal dimensions suggest. MartinLogan, Ltd.
MartinLogan combines each FMT with a Folded Motion Waveguide engineered for a controlled 90° horizontal × 90° vertical dispersion pattern. The waveguide helps maintain consistent high-frequency coverage while controlling energy that would otherwise contribute to unwanted room reflections. MartinLogan, Ltd.
Woven Fiberglass Unibody Drivers
The twelve 4-inch midrange/bass drivers use the same woven-fiberglass cone material found in MartinLogan's current full-size Motion loudspeakers, helping maintain tonal consistency when Discrete Cinema components are combined with other Motion models. MartinLogan
Fiberglass provides a high stiffness-to-mass ratio, allowing the compact cones to remain controlled while delivering the midrange impact and dynamic output demanded by movie soundtracks.
100Hz–25kHz Response — Designed for a Subwoofer
The Soundbar 85 is intentionally optimized around the frequencies most important to the front soundstage rather than forcing deep bass from an enclosure only 2.37 inches deep. Its specified frequency response is 100Hz–25,000Hz ±3dB. MartinLogan, Ltd.
MartinLogan recommends combining Motion Discrete Cinema speakers with a high-performance subwoofer, including models from its Dynamo Foundation, Dynamo, or Abyss families. This allows the Soundbar 85 to concentrate on dialogue, midrange dynamics, and high-frequency detail while dedicated subwoofers reproduce the demanding low-frequency portion of the soundtrack. MartinLogan
For a properly engineered theater, this is a much more capable approach than asking an ultra-thin soundbar enclosure to reproduce deep bass on its own.
93dB Sensitivity & 280-Watt Amplifier Compatibility
With 93dB sensitivity at 2.83V/1m, the Soundbar 85 is designed for substantial output without requiring extreme amplifier power.
MartinLogan specifies a 4-ohm nominal impedance, while noting compatibility with amplifiers rated for 4-, 6-, or 8-ohm speakers, and recommends 20–280 watts of amplifier power. MartinLogan, Ltd.
That makes it suitable for everything from a streamlined premium AV receiver installation to a more ambitious system using dedicated multichannel amplification.
2.5-Way Crossover Architecture
The Soundbar 85 employs a 2.5-way crossover topology. Rather than asking every driver to reproduce exactly the same bandwidth, the architecture allows MartinLogan to optimize the interaction between the numerous woofers and Folded Motion tweeters for the cabinet's three-channel configuration. MartinLogan, Ltd.
The result is the driver density needed for an 85-inch-scale presentation without turning the enclosure into an oversized conventional speaker cabinet.
Sealed Extruded-Aluminum Cabinet
The 15 drivers are housed in a rigid sealed aluminum enclosure. MartinLogan chose extruded aluminum because its strength permits thinner cabinet walls than a conventional MDF construction, maximizing usable internal air volume while keeping the speaker exceptionally shallow. MartinLogan, Ltd.
The rigidity also reduces cabinet flex and unwanted resonance, allowing the drivers rather than the enclosure to produce the acoustic output.
At only 4.76 inches high and 2.37 inches deep, the speaker maintains the visual profile expected alongside today's ultra-thin premium televisions.
Proportioned for 85" Displays
The Soundbar 85 measures 74.1 inches wide, giving it proportions specifically developed around 85-inch-class televisions. MartinLogan describes this approach as matching the display's acoustic scale: as screen size increases, driver density and acoustic capability increase with it. MartinLogan
The result is a front speaker that visually follows the television while producing a soundstage better matched to a large-format image.
Clean Wall or TV-Mounted Installation
A low-profile wall mount is included, with adjustment designed to help installers precisely align the speaker below the television. The cabinet also incorporates rear cable-management channels to keep speaker wiring hidden after installation. MartinLogan
An optional Low Profile Speaker TV Mount Kit allows the speaker to attach to the television's mounting structure. This is particularly useful with articulating or pull-out TV mounts because the Soundbar 85 can move with the display while maintaining its alignment. MartinLogan
MartinLogan's September 25, 2026 dealer sheet confirms that the Soundbar 85 includes its wall mount and identifies the dedicated TV mounting kit as compatible with the Soundbar 85, 75, 65 and Discrete Cinema LCR models. Motion Discrete Cinema - USR51 …
Tool-Free Speaker Connections
The Motion Discrete Cinema mounting system uses a removable speaker-wire connector. Wiring can be terminated before the speaker is placed on the wall; tension levers secure the conductors without requiring a screwdriver, after which the connector plugs into the rear of the speaker. MartinLogan
For custom installation, this is a meaningful detail: installers can complete and verify terminations before hanging and aligning the 74.1-inch enclosure.
