Overview

MartinLogan Classic ESL 9 Electrostatic Loudspeakers

The MartinLogan Classic ESL 9 brings Masterpiece Series electrostatic technology into a completely passive loudspeaker design. A 44 × 9.2-inch XStat CLS electrostatic panel with 405 square inches of radiating area handles the midrange and high frequencies, while dual 8-inch aluminum-cone woofers extend bass response to a specified 34 Hz. MartinLogan, Ltd.

Unlike the powered Impression ESL 11A, the Classic ESL 9 has no internal woofer amplification, DSP, or Anthem Room Correction. Both its electrostatic panel and dynamic bass section are driven by the connected amplifier, making amplifier selection especially important.

44 × 9.2-Inch XStat CLS Electrostatic Panel

At the heart of the Classic ESL 9 is MartinLogan's XStat Curvilinear Line Source (CLS) electrostatic transducer. The panel measures 44 inches high by 9.2 inches wide and provides 405 square inches of active radiating area. MartinLogan, Ltd.

MartinLogan's extremely lightweight electrostatic diaphragm reproduces the spectrum above the 380 Hz crossover point, avoiding a conventional midrange driver and tweeter. CLS curvature provides 30° horizontal dispersion while retaining the controlled vertical radiation of a 44-inch line source.

MicroPerf, ClearSpar & AirFrame Blade

MicroPerf stator technology exposes substantially more diaphragm surface than traditional electrostatic panel construction, increasing usable radiating area without requiring a wider panel. ClearSpar spacers reinforce the panel and maintain diaphragm tension without substantially obstructing its transparent radiating surface. MartinLogan, Ltd.

The complete panel is supported by MartinLogan's AirFrame Blade, manufactured from aerospace-grade extruded aluminum. Its rigid structure mechanically and acoustically isolates the electrostatic panel from the woofer enclosure while minimizing obstruction of the panel's dipole radiation. MartinLogan, Ltd.

Controlled Dipole Radiation

The XStat panel operates as a true dipole radiator, producing sound from both its front and rear surfaces while directing relatively little energy toward the side walls.

This controlled dispersion reduces early lateral reflections that can blur stereo localization while allowing later-arriving rear radiation to contribute to image depth and ambience. MartinLogan recommends positioning the electrostatic panel at least 2.5 feet from the wall behind it for optimum performance. MartinLogan, Ltd.

Dual 8-Inch Aluminum Woofers

Bass is produced by two 8-inch cast-basket, high-excursion aluminum-cone woofers arranged in an opposing configuration, with one firing forward and the other rearward.

The opposing arrangement reduces cabinet vibration, particularly through the 34–100 Hz region, while the rear woofer is tuned to reduce undesirable interaction with the wall behind the speaker. A flared, rear-firing low-turbulence slot port extends deep-bass output while also contributing structural bracing to the enclosure. MartinLogan, Ltd.

The complete passive system delivers a specified frequency response of 34 Hz–23 kHz ±3 dB.

Advanced Vojtko Crossover

MartinLogan's Vojtko-voiced crossover integrates the electrostatic panel with the dual dynamic woofers at 380 Hz.

The passive network uses a custom-wound audio transformer, air-core inductors, low-DCR steel-laminate coils, and polyester capacitors. Because the Classic ESL 9 is completely passive, this crossover performs the critical task of integrating the electrostatic and dynamic sections without the active DSP used in the powered Masterpiece models. MartinLogan, Ltd.

Bi-Wire & Bi-Amp Capability

Two sets of MartinLogan custom 5-way tool-less binding posts provide separate connections for the electrostatic panel and woofer section.

With the supplied jumpers installed, the Classic ESL 9 can be operated from a conventional single speaker-cable connection. Removing the jumpers allows bi-wiring or vertical/horizontal bi-amplification, providing additional flexibility for advanced two-channel systems. MartinLogan, Ltd.

A low-voltage DC supply energizes the electrostatic panel, eliminating the need for a conventional heavy IEC power cable. Maximum electrical consumption for the electrostatic system is only 2 watts per channel, with less than 1 watt consumed in standby. MartinLogan, Ltd.

Amplifier Matching

Amplifier quality matters with the Classic ESL 9. Sensitivity is 90 dB/2.83V/1m, with a nominal impedance of 4 ohms that falls to 0.8 ohm at 20 kHz. MartinLogan's current product specifications recommend 20–400 watts per channel and compatibility with amplifiers rated for 4-, 6-, or 8-ohm loudspeakers. MartinLogan, Ltd.

The low high-frequency impedance means wattage alone does not determine compatibility. Current delivery, output-stage stability, and the amplifier's behavior into an electrostatic load should all be considered when building a Classic ESL 9 system.
