The Luxman PD-191A Belt-Drive Turntable is the centerpiece of Luxman's modern analog lineup, combining a massive precision-machined platter, sophisticated brushless DC motor system, and an entirely new 10-inch LTA-710 tonearm into a turntable engineered for serious high-end vinyl playback.

Replacing the long-running PD-171 series, the PD-191A represents a substantial redesign rather than a simple evolution. Luxman focused on the fundamentals that determine turntable performance: speed stability, vibration control, rotational inertia, tonearm accuracy, mechanical rigidity, and isolation.

The result is a beautifully engineered turntable that combines traditional analog craftsmanship with modern precision—and gives enthusiasts considerable flexibility to build the analog front end they want.

LTA-710 10-Inch Knife-Edge Tonearm

One of the biggest developments in the PD-191A is its LTA-710 tonearm, created specifically for this turntable through a collaboration between Luxman and renowned Japanese tonearm specialist SAEC.

The static-balanced, S-shaped tonearm uses a concealed vertical knife-edge bearing designed to provide extremely high initial sensitivity. That allows the arm to respond to extremely small movements as the stylus tracks the record groove.

Luxman chose an effective length of 256mm—approximately 10 inches. The longer arm geometry helps reduce tracking error while improving resistance to the effects of vibration from the record surface.

The LTA-710 also provides the adjustments expected from a serious analog front end, including tracking force, anti-skating, and 22mm of tonearm height adjustment for accommodating different cartridges.

This isn't an off-the-shelf arm added to a Luxman turntable. It was developed as an integral part of the PD-191A.

5.2kg Machined Aluminum Platter

The PD-191A uses a substantial 35mm-thick aluminum platter weighing 5.2kg—or roughly 11.5 pounds.

It's machined from a thick aluminum billet and diamond-cut to create its distinctive precision finish.

The mass isn't there simply to make the turntable feel substantial. The platter acts as a flywheel, producing a moment of inertia of 0.7 t·cm² to help maintain smooth, consistent rotation.

Supporting it is a highly rigid 16mm stainless-steel spindle combined with a specially engineered bearing system. A PEEK thrust bearing provides excellent wear and heat resistance, while a brass radial bearing and organic molybdenum oil maintain stable lubrication under the platter's substantial load.

The goal is straightforward: keep the record rotating as smoothly and consistently as possible while minimizing mechanical noise.

Brushless DC Motor With PID Speed Control

Luxman developed a high-torque brushless DC motor specifically for the PD-191A.

The motor is paired with a large-capacity regulated power supply and sophisticated sine-wave PWM/PID speed-control system.

Rather than simply driving the platter and hoping inertia handles the rest, the system continuously works to maintain accurate rotational speed. A high-performance reference clock utilizing a MEMS oscillator provides the timing reference for speed correction.

Motor energy reaches the platter through an EPDM belt, selected for durability and resistance to aging.

Together, the high-torque motor, electronic control system, heavyweight platter, and belt drive are engineered to deliver stable rotation with extremely low mechanical interference.

33⅓, 45 and 78 RPM Playback

The PD-191A isn't limited to conventional LPs and singles.

It supports 33⅓, 45, and 78 RPM, making it capable of playing a much broader vinyl collection.

Each speed can be independently adjusted by ±6%, and Luxman incorporates a reflected LED stroboscope to provide a visual reference for precise rotational adjustment.

For collectors with everything from modern audiophile pressings to older 78 RPM records, that additional flexibility can be particularly valuable.

Engineered to Control Vibration

A phono cartridge is essentially an extraordinarily sensitive mechanical transducer. It can't distinguish between movement caused by information in the record groove and unwanted movement entering the system from somewhere else.

That's why vibration management is so important in a reference turntable.

The PD-191A uses an underslung suspension structure built around a 15mm-thick aluminum plate to increase rigidity while controlling resonance.

The motor drive system and power transformer are mounted to an extra-thick lower plate and isolated using damping rubber, helping prevent mechanical and electrical vibration from reaching the stylus.

Large-diameter isolation feet incorporate specially selected damping material and provide up to 5mm of individual height adjustment, allowing the turntable to be precisely leveled while further reducing the transmission of external vibration.

Designed for Cartridge and Tonearm Flexibility

The PD-191A gives serious analog enthusiasts room to experiment.

Its supplied LTA-710 tonearm accommodates cartridges weighing 4 to 11 grams, or 17 to 24 grams including the headshell.

Luxman includes its own lightweight aluminum headshell using D.U.C.C. conductors for the internal lead wires, along with a DIN-to-RCA phono cable made with audio-grade OFC conductors.

The arm base itself is independent, allowing optional bases to accommodate a variety of 9- and 10-inch tonearms.

For more ambitious analog systems, an optional external arm base can accommodate a 12-inch tonearm, opening the possibility of building a multi-arm turntable configuration.

That means the PD-191A can evolve along with the owner's cartridge and tonearm preferences rather than locking the system into a single configuration.

Classic Luxman Design

The engineering may be modern, but visually the PD-191A is unmistakably Luxman.

A rosewood-stained solid natural wood front panel with a high-gloss finish contrasts beautifully with the finely finished aluminum top plate.

The motor is positioned within the lower chassis to create a lower center of gravity and a cleaner overall profile. Power, start/stop, speed selection, and speed adjustment controls are conveniently located on the top panel.

It's substantial without being excessive and has the kind of understated Japanese industrial design that works equally well in a contemporary system or alongside classic Luxman components.
