Luxman LTA-710 10-Inch Knife-Edge Tonearm

Precision Engineering at the Beginning of the Analog Signal Chain

The Luxman LTA-710 Tonearm is a high-performance 10-inch, static-balanced S-shaped tonearm developed to extract the smallest musical details from a record groove while minimizing tracking error, unwanted vibration, and mechanical interference.

Jointly developed by Luxman and Japanese tonearm specialist SAEC, the LTA-710 combines a precision knife-edge bearing system, 256mm effective length, extensive cartridge adjustment, and a machined-aluminum headshell wired with ultra-high-purity D.U.C.C. copper conductors.

The LTA-710 is the tonearm supplied with Luxman's flagship PD-191A turntable, but Luxman also offers it separately for enthusiasts building or upgrading a serious analog playback system.

Tonearm performance comes down to incredibly small movements.

The stylus has to follow microscopic modulations in a record groove while the tonearm allows it to move freely enough to track accurately—without adding its own vibration, resistance, or resonance to the process.

For the LTA-710, Luxman collaborated with SAEC, a Japanese manufacturer with decades of specialized tonearm development experience.

At the center of the design is a highly precise knife-edge vertical bearing. Rather than relying on a conventional bearing arrangement, the knife-edge structure is engineered for extremely high initial sensitivity, allowing the arm to respond freely to the cartridge as it tracks the groove.

Why a 10-Inch Tonearm?

Luxman selected an effective length of 256mm, putting the LTA-710 in the 10-inch tonearm category.

That extra length isn't simply about making the tonearm more substantial.

Tonearm geometry determines how closely the cartridge follows the ideal tangent to the record groove as it moves across the LP. Increasing effective length can reduce tracking-angle error compared with shorter arm geometries while also improving stability as the stylus encounters surface irregularities.

Luxman specifies a tracking error angle of +1.07° to -1.52°, with a 16mm overhang.

It's a carefully considered middle ground between the compact dimensions of a conventional 9-inch arm and the considerably larger footprint of a 12-inch design.

Static-Balance S-Shaped Architecture

The LTA-710 uses a static-balanced S-shaped design with a universal removable headshell.

That combination gives serious vinyl listeners something increasingly valuable: flexibility.

A removable headshell makes cartridge installation and replacement substantially easier and allows multiple cartridges to be mounted on separate compatible headshells.

That can be especially useful for collectors who use different cartridges for different records—for example, a high-end moving-coil cartridge for critical LP listening and another cartridge for older or specialty pressings.

The LTA-710 accommodates cartridges weighing 4 to 11 grams, or 17 to 24 grams including the headshell.

Machined-Aluminum Headshell With D.U.C.C. Wiring

Luxman includes a precision-machined aluminum headshell rather than treating the headshell as an afterthought.

The internal lead wires use 7N-Class D.U.C.C. copper, specified at 99.99998% or greater copper purity.

This is particularly relevant in a tonearm because the electrical signal generated by a phono cartridge is extraordinarily small—especially when using a low-output moving-coil cartridge.

The LTA-710 is designed to preserve that signal from the cartridge onward, giving the downstream phono preamplifier the cleanest possible starting point.

Fine-Tune the Cartridge Instead of Compromising It

A premium cartridge can't perform correctly if the tonearm doesn't allow it to be properly aligned.

The LTA-710 provides extensive adjustment for cartridge setup, including stylus pressure, anti-skating, cartridge alignment, and tonearm height.

Tonearm height can be adjusted through a substantial 22mm range, while anti-skating is adjustable from 0 to 4 grams.

That flexibility is important when moving between cartridges with different body heights, tracking-force requirements, and mechanical characteristics.

Luxman also includes both an overhang gauge and fixing/positioning gauge, helping simplify accurate installation and alignment.

More Than a PD-191A Tonearm

While the LTA-710 was developed for and is installed on the Luxman PD-191A flagship turntable, Luxman deliberately designed it as a standalone tonearm as well.

With the optional Luxman OPPD-AB7 arm base, the LTA-710 can be installed on the Luxman PD-171A, PD-171AL, and PD-191AL turntables.

Luxman also includes a positioning gauge intended to help with installation on compatible turntables from other manufacturers.

That makes the LTA-710 particularly interesting for owners of earlier Luxman analog platforms who want to substantially upgrade the tonearm without replacing the entire turntable.

The Grid's Take on the Luxman LTA-710

The LTA-710 is one of those analog components where the engineering makes more sense when you consider how little signal you're actually dealing with.

A phono cartridge is trying to retrieve incredibly small mechanical information from a groove. The tonearm's job is essentially to stay out of the way while keeping that cartridge positioned correctly.

That's why the combination of the knife-edge bearing, 10-inch effective length, 13.73-gram effective mass, 22mm height adjustment, universal headshell, and broad cartridge compatibility matters more than simply having an impressive-looking arm.

We also like that Luxman made the LTA-710 available separately.

For someone who already owns a PD-171A, PD-171AL, or PD-191AL, adding the appropriate Luxman arm base and LTA-710 creates a legitimate upgrade path. For a custom turntable project, it gives you access to the same tonearm Luxman chose for its flagship PD-191A.
