LIFES 1.0 Amplification

Like the L-507Z and L-509Z above it, the L-505Z incorporates LIFES — Luxman Integrated Feedback Engine System.

LIFES represents the next generation of Luxman's amplification technology, evolving from the company's long-running ODNF feedback architecture.

Rather than simply updating the previous circuit, Luxman redesigned the amplification engine from the ground up, simplifying the circuit and reducing the number of parallel elements. The result is substantially lower distortion while preserving the natural musical qualities Luxman was seeking from its feedback design.

In the L-505Z, the output stage uses a bipolar parallel push-pull Class AB configuration delivering:

100W + 100W into 8Ω
150W + 150W into 4Ω

That's substantial output for real-world high-end systems and gives the L-505Z the ability to drive a wide range of quality loudspeakers.

100 Watts Per Channel With Real Luxman Engineering Behind It

Power ratings don't tell the entire story of an amplifier.

The L-505Z combines its 100-watt-per-channel output with a damping factor of 200, a substantial power supply, low-resistance signal paths, and discrete preamplifier buffer circuitry.

As loudspeaker demands change with frequency and impedance, those supporting systems become just as important as the number printed next to the 8-ohm power rating.

The L-505Z is designed as a complete amplification platform rather than an amplifier built around a headline wattage figure.

LECUA Electronic Volume Control

The volume control is one of the most frequently used—and potentially most destructive—parts of an analog preamplifier.

The L-505Z uses Luxman's LECUA — Luxman Electronically Controlled Ultimate Attenuator instead of relying on a conventional variable potentiometer in the audio path.

For this generation, Luxman developed a more compact solid-state IC implementation of LECUA while retaining its fundamental goal: minimize changes in sound quality as volume is adjusted.

The system provides 88 precise volume steps, giving the listener fine control at both low and high listening levels.

LECUA also handles left/right balance adjustment electronically while maintaining Luxman's traditional weighted rotary volume knob for the tactile feel of a classic analog amplifier.

Discrete Preamplifier Buffer Stage

The L-505Z doesn't treat the preamplifier section as a simple volume control feeding a power amplifier.

A discrete buffer circuit with high current-supply capability sits at the output of the preamplifier stage.

Its purpose is to preserve the delicate incoming source signal while providing a strong, stable signal to drive the power-amplifier section.

Luxman also uses a switching IC selected for excellent channel separation and low crosstalk in the input-selector circuitry.

This attention to the preamp stage is one of the reasons the L-505Z behaves more like a serious high-end control-and-power amplifier combination contained within a single chassis.

540VA Transformer and High-Capacity Power Supply

The L-505Z is built around a substantial 540VA EI-type power transformer.

That transformer feeds four custom 10,000μF filter capacitors, providing a total reservoir of 40,000μF.

A strong power supply allows the amplifier to respond quickly when music suddenly demands more energy while maintaining stable operating voltages as the loudspeaker load changes.

It's also an area where Luxman's approach becomes obvious. The L-505Z may be the starting point in the current Z-Series integrated lineup, but its power supply is engineered like that of a serious standalone audio component.

Built-In MM/MC Phono Stage

The resurgence of vinyl hasn't been treated as an afterthought.

Luxman equips the L-505Z with a dedicated MM/MC phono equalizer circuit using a parallelized first stage.

That means both moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges can connect directly to the amplifier without requiring an external phono preamplifier.

The phono inputs are specified at:

MM: 2.5mV / 47kΩ
MC: 0.3mV / 100Ω

For a streamlined analog system, pair the L-505Z with a quality turntable and cartridge and you're ready to play records without adding another component.

If the analog system eventually becomes more ambitious, an external phono stage such as the Luxman E-250 or E-07 can be added later.

Balanced Inputs and System Expansion

The L-505Z provides both conventional line-level and balanced analog inputs, allowing it to take full advantage of high-performance source components equipped with XLR outputs.

Luxman also includes a Separate function, allowing the preamplifier and power-amplifier sections to be used independently.

This opens the door to more sophisticated configurations, including adding an external power amplifier or incorporating the L-505Z into an AV system.

You can build a straightforward system around the L-505Z today without locking yourself into exactly the same configuration for the life of the amplifier.

Serious Headphone Capability

Luxman provides two headphone connections:

6.3mm standard headphone output
4.4mm headphone output with independent left/right grounds

The 4.4mm connection uses independent ground wiring and separate unbalanced amplifier circuits for the left and right channels, improving channel separation with compatible headphones.

That makes the L-505Z a more complete solution for listeners who regularly alternate between loudspeakers and high-quality headphones.

The L-505Z retains several controls that have disappeared from many modern high-end amplifiers.
