100 Years of Luxman, Distilled Into Pure Class A

The Luxman L-100 CENTENNIAL Integrated Amplifier was created to commemorate Luxman's 100th anniversary—and it represents something special even within the company's long history of amplifier design.

Rather than pursuing ever-higher power figures, Luxman built the L-100 CENTENNIAL around pure Class A operation, the latest LIFES 1.1 amplification engine, a newly developed LECUA1000 precision volume control, a massive power supply, and a triple-parallel output stage.

Rated at 20 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 40 watts per channel into 4 ohms, the L-100 CENTENNIAL is designed for listeners who prioritize tonal density, low-level resolution, texture, and musical expression over headline wattage.

It is also the first pure Class A Luxman integrated amplifier to employ LIFES technology, making it more than an anniversary edition of an existing amplifier. The L-100 CENTENNIAL represents a new generation of Luxman's Class A integrated amplifier design.

Pure Class A From Input to Output

Class A amplification takes a fundamentally different approach to output-stage operation.

Instead of switching output devices between different portions of the musical waveform, the L-100 CENTENNIAL keeps its output stage operating continuously within the Class A region.

The tradeoff is efficiency. Class A amplifiers generate significant heat and require substantial power supplies for comparatively modest rated output.

The payoff is why audiophiles continue to seek them out.

Luxman designed the L-100 CENTENNIAL around smoothness, musical density, low-level detail and natural tonal expression, with its entire rated output operating in pure Class A.

Power is rated at:

20W + 20W into 8Ω
40W + 40W into 4Ω

Those numbers shouldn't be evaluated the same way as the output rating of a conventional Class AB integrated amplifier. The L-100 CENTENNIAL is about the quality of those watts, backed by an unusually substantial power supply and a damping factor of 300.

LIFES 1.1: Luxman's Latest Amplification Engine

The L-100 CENTENNIAL introduces LIFES 1.1 — Luxman Integrated Feedback Engine System to a pure Class A integrated amplifier.

LIFES evolved from Luxman's long-running ODNF amplification philosophy and is designed to identify and suppress distortion while minimizing the effect of feedback on the original musical signal.

Version 1.1 advances the architecture further.

Luxman employs parallel differential detection circuitry at the input stage, further reducing distortion while pursuing greater clarity and energy across the frequency range.

The output stage uses a bipolar, triple-parallel push-pull configuration, giving the amplifier substantial current capability despite its deliberately conservative 20-watt Class A rating.

This isn't a low-powered amplifier because Luxman couldn't make more power.

It is a 20-watt amplifier because Luxman chose to keep the entire rated output inside the Class A operating region.

New LECUA1000 Volume Control

The L-100 CENTENNIAL also introduces a newly developed version of Luxman's LECUA1000 — Luxman Electronically Controlled Ultimate Attenuator.

It provides 88 precise volume steps while keeping the attenuator directly integrated with the amplification circuitry.

This shortens the signal path and minimizes the potential degradation that can occur through a conventional analog volume potentiometer.

Luxman also equips the preamplifier output with high-grade discrete buffer circuitry derived from its flagship preamplifier designs.

That's important because the L-100 CENTENNIAL isn't simply a Class A power amplifier with source selection and a volume knob added to the front.

Luxman has engineered the preamplifier section as a serious part of the complete amplifier.

80,000μF Power-Supply Reservoir

Pure Class A operation places significant demands on a power supply.

Luxman responds with a custom EI-core power transformer feeding eight 10,000μF filter capacitors.

That's a total of:

80,000μF of filter capacitance.

The purpose isn't simply stored energy. A stable, low-impedance power supply helps the amplifier maintain control when musical demands and loudspeaker impedance change rapidly.

It's also why the L-100 CENTENNIAL weighs 25.4kg—approximately 56 pounds—despite being rated at only 20 watts per channel.

The amplifier's engineering is built around delivering those Class A watts with authority.

Damping Factor of 300

The L-100 CENTENNIAL carries a damping factor of 300, providing substantial electrical control over connected loudspeakers.

That specification becomes particularly interesting in a pure Class A amplifier because it reinforces an important point: low rated wattage does not automatically mean weak loudspeaker control.

Speaker matching still matters, especially in larger rooms or with particularly insensitive designs, but the L-100 CENTENNIAL is engineered to behave like a far more substantial amplifier than its 20-watt rating might initially suggest.

Built-In MM/MC Phono Stage

A premium MM/MC phono amplifier is built directly into the L-100 CENTENNIAL.

Input specifications are:

MM: 2.5mV / 47kΩ
MC: 0.3mV / 100Ω

That allows a high-quality turntable to connect directly to the amplifier without automatically requiring a separate phono preamplifier.

A system built around a Luxman PD-191A and compatible cartridge, for example, can remain remarkably simple.

For more advanced cartridge loading and phono-stage flexibility, the E-07 remains the natural upgrade path.

Balanced and Unbalanced Connectivity

The L-100 CENTENNIAL is designed to function as the centerpiece of a complete reference system.

Its analog connectivity accommodates both conventional RCA and balanced source components, while preamp output and main amplifier input functionality allows the preamplifier and power-amplifier sections to be separated.

That gives the amplifier room to evolve with the system rather than locking the owner into a single configuration forever.

Two substantial sets of speaker terminals also support bi-wiring and accommodate both banana plugs and compatible Y-lug connections.

Serious Headphone Listening

Luxman provides both:

6.3mm headphone output
4.4mm headphone output

The 4.4mm connection uses independent left- and right-channel ground wiring to improve channel separation and imaging with compatible headphones.

For someone building a high-end system that needs to handle both loudspeaker and headphone listening, the L-100 CENTENNIAL doesn't treat headphones as an afterthought.

Tone Controls, Loudness and Balance

The L-100 CENTENNIAL retains useful analog controls rather than eliminating them for the sake of minimalism.

Tone adjustment provides:

Bass: ±8dB at 100Hz
Treble: ±8dB at 10kHz

Luxman also provides left/right balance adjustment, loudness compensation, mute functionality, and preamp/power amp separation.

The controls are there when the recording, room, listening level, or system needs them.

Anniversary Design With Classic Luxman Meters

The L-100 CENTENNIAL looks appropriately special without abandoning Luxman's design language.

Its brushed white-finished front panel is accented by a polished CENTENNIAL badge, while two large analog meters use a distinctive soft yellow illumination chosen to complement the amplifier's Class A character.

Between the meters, a 7-segment LED display shows attenuation level.

Meter illumination and the LED display can be switched independently from the supplied remote, allowing the front panel to be darkened during serious listening.

It's immediately recognizable as Luxman, but clearly not just another model in the standard lineup.

Engineering Beyond the Headline Features

Luxman uses peel-coat PCB construction throughout the input/output and amplifier circuitry, eliminating conventional resistive board coatings that can introduce unwanted electrical effects.

Newly developed low-noise relays improve channel separation within the input-selector system.

The chassis uses Luxman's loop-less construction to minimize ground impedance and magnetic interference.

Underneath are density-gradient cast-iron isolation feet, engineered to suppress external vibration and internal mechanical resonance.

Even the AC inlet receives attention, using a robust gold-plated structure designed to securely support substantial aftermarket power cables.

None of these features exists to sell the amplifier on a specification sheet. They're part of Luxman's larger approach to reducing everything that can interfere with the musical signal.

The Grid's Take on the Luxman L-100 CENTENNIAL

The L-100 CENTENNIAL is the Luxman integrated amplifier for the person who looks at 20 watts per channel and doesn't immediately ask why it isn't 200.

That's the entire point of this amplifier.

The L-505Z, L-507Z and L-509Z are excellent choices when you need progressively greater Class AB output and flexibility with demanding loudspeakers. The L-100 CENTENNIAL goes in a different direction.

Luxman has taken LIFES 1.1, a triple-parallel output stage, 80,000μF power supply, LECUA1000 volume control and serious preamplifier circuitry and optimized the entire package around pure Class A operation.

For the right loudspeaker and room, that's an extremely compelling proposition.

This is also where speaker matching becomes critical. A highly revealing, reasonably efficient loudspeaker can allow the L-100 CENTENNIAL to play to its strengths. A difficult low-sensitivity speaker in a large room may make the higher-powered L-509Z or Luxman separates the better choice.

That's exactly the kind of distinction that shouldn't be decided by a wattage specification alone.

Pair the L-100 CENTENNIAL with a D-10X or D-07X for digital playback, an NT-07 for streaming, or a PD-191A for vinyl and you have a system that represents a very different side of Luxman: less about maximum output and more about refinement, texture and musical engagement.
