The Luxman C-10X Control Preamplifier is Luxman's flagship two-channel preamplifier, designed to sit at the center of a no-compromise high-end audio system. It introduces Luxman's LIFES 1.0 amplification feedback engine to its reference preamplifier platform and combines it with the sophisticated LECUA-EX electronically controlled attenuator, fully balanced signal architecture, massive independent power-supply sections, and extensive system-control capabilities.

The C-10X replaces the C-900u and represents the first major redesign of Luxman's flagship control amplifier in approximately a decade.

This isn't simply a source selector with a volume control. The C-10X is engineered to take extremely delicate source signals, control them with extraordinary precision, and deliver them to a power amplifier with minimal noise, distortion, or alteration.

Pair it with the Luxman M-10X power amplifier, and you have Luxman's reference preamplifier and power-amplifier combination designed around the same generation of circuitry and engineering.

LIFES 1.0: Luxman's Next-Generation Amplifier Circuit

At the heart of the C-10X is LIFES 1.0 — Luxman Integrated Feedback Engine System.

LIFES represents the evolution of Luxman's long-running ODNF feedback architecture. Rather than simply increasing conventional negative feedback, Luxman's approach is designed around detecting and feeding back distortion components while preserving the natural characteristics of the original audio signal.

First introduced in the flagship M-10X power amplifier, LIFES was subsequently adapted for the C-10X's preamplifier circuitry.

Four identical LIFES amplifier modules operate within the C-10X's fully balanced architecture, creating independent positive and negative signal paths for the left and right channels.

The objective is extremely low distortion and noise without sacrificing the immediacy, dynamics, and musical character that can be lost when feedback is applied too aggressively.

LECUA-EX Precision Volume Control

Volume control is one of the most critical parts of any preamplifier.

A conventional potentiometer places a variable resistor directly in the audio signal path. Luxman's LECUA-EX — Luxman Electronically Controlled Ultimate Attenuator-EX — takes a considerably more sophisticated approach.

The large machined-aluminum volume knob operates a high-precision rotary encoder that is completely disconnected from the audio signal path. The encoder controls an electronically switched network of precision fixed resistors.

The result is exceptionally accurate volume adjustment while minimizing the sonic degradation, channel imbalance, and aging issues associated with conventional variable resistors.

LECUA-EX provides 192 discrete volume positions from 0 to 95.5dB, allowing extremely fine control over listening level.

Luxman also developed a weighted rotation mechanism for the control itself, giving the substantial front-panel knob the tactile feel expected from a flagship component.

Fully Balanced From Input to Output

The C-10X's LIFES amplifier circuits and LECUA-EX attenuators are arranged in a fully balanced configuration with direct three-dimensional connections between the circuits.

Luxman deliberately minimizes unnecessary wiring and signal-path length, while the four amplifier and attenuator assemblies operate under identical conditions.

Balanced input sensitivity is 180mV with a 90kΩ input impedance, while balanced output impedance is just 180 Ohms.

The balanced circuit achieves an outstanding 132dB signal-to-noise ratio and total harmonic distortion of only 0.003% from 20Hz to 20kHz.

For a reference system, that exceptionally low noise floor matters. The preamplifier should reveal what the source is doing—not announce its own presence.

More Than a Minimalist Preamplifier

Luxman hasn't pursued purity by stripping away useful functionality.

The C-10X is designed to function as the actual control center of a sophisticated two-channel system.

Its output configuration can be switched between unbalanced, balanced, and bi-amp operation.

LECUA-EX also allows fine adjustment of left/right channel balance from -6dB on the left to -6dB on the right, while bi-amp output levels can independently be adjusted by ±6dB.

An input-offset function provides up to -6dB of adjustment for each input, allowing sources with significantly different output levels to be normalized. Switch from one source to another and you don't have to deal with a huge jump or drop in volume.

Those are small details until you're actually living with a complex reference system every day.

Tone Control Without Giving Up Signal Purity

The C-10X includes electronically controlled bass and treble adjustment, with up to:

±8dB at 100Hz for bass
±8dB at 10kHz for treble

Luxman also incorporates a volume-linked loudness function designed to compensate for the way human hearing changes at lower listening levels.

For purists, Line Straight mode allows unnecessary tone circuitry to be bypassed.

That gives the owner the choice: keep the signal path as direct as possible or make subtle corrections when a recording, room, or listening level benefits from them.

Built for Stereo and Home Theater Integration

The C-10X can also coexist with a high-performance home theater system.

An external preamplifier input allows the output of an AV processor or AV preamplifier to feed the system while bypassing the C-10X's normal volume control.

That makes it possible to use the same reference power amplifiers and main loudspeakers for both serious two-channel listening and the front channels of a home theater.

For customers investing in one exceptional pair of speakers rather than maintaining completely separate music and cinema systems, this is an extremely useful capability.

Massive Independent Power Supply

A flagship preamplifier may not need hundreds of watts of output, but the quality and stability of its power supply remain critical.

Luxman equips the C-10X with a substantial CI-core power transformer and seven custom 3,300μF filter capacitors.

Dedicated power-supply smoothing is provided for each channel, helping isolate the left and right audio circuits while maintaining stable voltage under changing musical demands.

The power supply is engineered to give the preamplifier substantial instantaneous energy reserves so it can confidently drive the power amplifier connected downstream.

Serious Attention to the Signal Path

Inside the C-10X, Luxman uses 100μm-thick PCB traces with a non-resistive gold-plated, peel-coated finish.

Luxman's characteristic rounded PCB traces avoid unnecessary sharp angles while maintaining more consistent conductor width throughout the signal path.

Custom capacitors and resistors are extensively used in critical audio circuits, while Luxman's own OFC cable is employed for internal wiring.

The rear panel uses substantial 27mm-pitch RCA connectors and high-quality Neutrik XLR terminals.

Every part of the design follows the same basic philosophy: preserve the source signal rather than trying to add something to it.

Chassis and Vibration Control

The C-10X uses Luxman's loop-less chassis architecture, designed to prevent the metal enclosure from creating unwanted ground loops while reducing the effects of magnetic fields and chassis current.

Large density-gradient cast-iron isolation feet mechanically stabilize the component and help suppress vibration entering from the equipment rack or listening environment.

The enclosure combines a finely machined hairline-finished aluminum top panel with Luxman's blasted-white front panel and substantial sculpted chassis.

Its design intentionally mirrors the M-10X reference power amplifier and D-10X digital player, allowing a complete Luxman reference system to share the same visual language.

High-Visibility Display and Full Remote Operation

The front-panel fluorescent display provides clear information about input selection, output configuration, and volume.

A Zoom Display function can enlarge the volume indication to four times its normal size, making it considerably easier to read from the listening position.

The supplied RA-20 aluminum remote control provides access to volume, mute, input selection, dimmer settings, output modes, balanced phase, channel presets, external preamp input, Line Straight, Loudness, and other major C-10X functions.
