Luxman's “Single-Chassis Separates” Amplifier

The Luxman L-509Z Integrated Amplifier sits at the top of Luxman's Z-Series integrated amplifier lineup, bringing technologies normally associated with separate preamplifiers and power amplifiers together in one substantial chassis.

Luxman describes the L-509Z around a “single-chassis separates” concept, and that distinction matters. Rather than treating the preamplifier as a supporting circuit for the power amplifier, Luxman equips both the preamp and power amp sections with independent LIFES 1.0 amplification circuitry.

Add the flagship LECUA-EX volume-control system, 120 watts per channel into 8 ohms, a 600VA power transformer, 80,000μF of filter capacitance, three-mode MM/MC phono stage, dual preamp outputs, balanced connectivity, dual speaker outputs, and dedicated headphone connections, and the L-509Z becomes much more than a conventional integrated amplifier.

For someone who wants reference-level Luxman amplification without moving to a C-10X/M-10X separates system, this is the amplifier.

LIFES 1.0 in Both the Preamp and Power Amp

At the heart of the L-509Z is LIFES 1.0 — Luxman Integrated Feedback Engine System.

LIFES evolved from Luxman's long-running ODNF circuitry and represents a ground-up redesign of the company's feedback architecture. The goal is to reduce distortion while preserving the natural musical qualities associated with a non-feedback design.

What makes the L-509Z particularly interesting is how Luxman implements it.

There are independent LIFES modules in both the fully discrete preamplifier and power-amplifier sections.

That approach is central to the single-chassis-separates philosophy. Luxman isn't simply putting a premium volume control in front of a large power amplifier. Both stages are treated as serious amplification components.

120 Watts Per Channel With Serious Current Capability

The L-509Z delivers:

120W + 120W into 8Ω
220W + 220W into 4Ω

The output stage uses a three-stage Darlington, quadruple-parallel push-pull bipolar configuration, giving the amplifier the current capability needed to drive demanding high-end loudspeakers.

Luxman also specifies an impressive damping factor of 330.

Large low-resistance speaker relays are connected in parallel, while ultra-thick 3.5mm² internal cabling connects directly to the speaker terminals.

This low-impedance output architecture is designed to get the energy stored in the L-509Z's substantial power supply to the loudspeaker with as little resistance as possible.

LECUA-EX Flagship Volume Control

The L-509Z steps beyond the LECUA1000 system used in several other Luxman integrated amplifiers and adopts the newer LECUA-EX — Luxman Electronically Controlled Ultimate Attenuator-Excellent eXperience.

Rather than placing a conventional variable resistor directly in the audio path, LECUA-EX switches through carefully selected fixed-value resistors.

The system provides 88 precise volume positions from 0 to 87dB while helping maintain consistent signal quality throughout the adjustment range.

Luxman also paid unusual attention to something that specification sheets often ignore: how the volume control actually feels.

A high-precision rotary encoder works with a newly developed weighted rotation mechanism to give the large aluminum knob the smooth, substantial tactile response expected from a flagship amplifier.

Even the acceleration rate of the knob and long-press operation of the remote can be configured.

600VA Transformer and 80,000μF Power Supply

The L-509Z is built around a custom 600VA EI-type power transformer.

It's backed by eight 10,000μF filter capacitors, providing a total reservoir of 80,000μF.

That is a substantial power supply for an integrated amplifier and one of the reasons the L-509Z weighs nearly 65 pounds.

The point isn't simply to create a bigger amplifier. A strong, highly regulated power supply allows the output stage to respond to rapid changes in musical demand while maintaining control as loudspeaker impedance changes.

This is where the single-chassis-separates concept becomes more than marketing language. The L-509Z has the physical power-supply infrastructure expected from serious standalone amplification.

A Much More Flexible MM/MC Phono Stage

Vinyl playback receives a significant upgrade in the L-509Z.

The built-in phono equalizer supports:

MM — Moving Magnet
MC-H — Moving Coil High
MC-L — Moving Coil Low

The two MC settings allow the amplifier to accommodate a broader range of moving-coil cartridges than a conventional single-setting MC input.

Input sensitivity and impedance are:

MM: 2.5mV / 47kΩ
MC-H: 0.3mV / 100Ω
MC-L: 0.1mV / 40Ω

That makes the L-509Z a particularly compelling centerpiece for a Luxman analog system. A PD-191A or PD-151 MARK II can be connected directly to the amplifier without automatically requiring a separate phono stage.

For an even more ambitious analog system, a dedicated E-250 or E-07 phono preamplifier can always be added later.

Three-Band Tone Control

Luxman has never subscribed to the idea that removing every control automatically makes an amplifier better.

The L-509Z expands the traditional bass and treble controls by adding a dedicated MIDDLE adjustment targeting the frequency region occupied by vocals and many lead instruments.

You get independent control over:

Bass: ±8dB at 100Hz
Middle: ±8dB at 760Hz
Treble: ±8dB at 10kHz

Luxman also provides left/right balance, Line Straight, and Loudness functions.

For a perfectly recorded album in a perfectly balanced system, you may leave everything untouched. For everything else, having the option is useful.

Built to Grow With the System

The L-509Z provides both preamp outputs and separate inputs, allowing its preamplifier and power-amplifier sections to be incorporated into more complex systems.

There are also two preamp outputs, providing additional flexibility when integrating external power amplifiers, subwoofers, or other system components.

Two independently switchable sets of substantial speaker terminals support A/B operation and bi-wiring.

This means the L-509Z doesn't become obsolete simply because the system evolves.

You can begin with it as the complete amplification solution and still have meaningful expansion options later.

4.4mm and 6.3mm Headphone Connections

The L-509Z includes both:

6.3mm standard headphone output
4.4mm headphone output with independent L/R grounds

The 4.4mm connection provides separate left- and right-channel grounding to improve channel separation with compatible headphones.

It's another example of Luxman treating functionality as part of the high-end experience rather than stripping features away simply to make the amplifier appear more minimalist.

Classic Luxman VU Meters

The L-509Z looks every bit like the flagship Luxman integrated amplifier.

Two large needle-driven analog VU meters dominate the front panel, illuminated by bright LEDs and designed with sensitive response characteristics.

Between the meters is a 7-segment LED display showing the current attenuation setting, making volume position easy to see from across the room.

The substantial aluminum top panel receives a precision hairline finish, while individually machined ventilation openings help dissipate heat from the amplifier circuitry.

Underneath, four large density-gradient cast-iron isolation feet stabilize the nearly 65-pound chassis and help reduce the transmission of unwanted vibration.

Attention to the Entire Signal Path

The L-509Z uses Luxman's beeline construction philosophy, routing critical signals through the shortest practical paths.

Luxman's circuit boards also employ its characteristic non-angled trace pattern, avoiding unnecessary sharp corners in the signal path.

Peel-coated circuit boards are used for the primary audio path to eliminate the influence of conventional coating material over the traces.

High-rigidity RCA terminals are used for LINE-1 and LINE-2, and the substantial speaker terminals accommodate compatible Y-lug connections.

None of these features individually defines the L-509Z. Together, they show how far Luxman has gone to treat an integrated amplifier like a pair of reference separates occupying the same enclosure.

The Grid's Take on the Luxman L-509Z

The L-509Z is probably the strongest argument in the Luxman lineup for not buying separates.

That's what makes it different from simply being a more powerful L-507Z.

You get LIFES circuitry in both the preamp and power amp sections, the flagship LECUA-EX attenuator, a four-parallel output stage, 600VA transformer, 80,000μF power supply, damping factor of 330, MM plus two MC phono settings, three-band tone controls, two preamp outputs, and serious system-expansion capability.

In other words, Luxman hasn't designed the L-509Z as a compromise for someone who doesn't have room for separates. It has been designed for someone who prefers one chassis but doesn't want the engineering compromised because of it.

For a clean reference system, pair the L-509Z with a D-07X for SACD/CD and DAC duties and an NT-07 for streaming. On the analog side, a PD-191A and LMC-5 create an exceptionally serious vinyl front end while still allowing the L-509Z's internal phono stage to keep the overall system remarkably simple.
