JTR Captivator RS2 | Dual 18" 4000W Sealed Subwoofer

The JTR Captivator RS2 is a reference-level sealed powered subwoofer built for home theaters and high-performance audio systems requiring enormous output, deep in-room extension and the characteristics of a sealed enclosure. With dual high-excursion 18-inch drivers, a built-in 4000-watt RMS DSP-optimized Class D amplifier and a heavily braced Baltic Birch cabinet, the RS2 delivers formidable low-frequency capability from a relatively compact footprint.

Unlike JTR's large ported Captivator ULF models, the RS2 uses a sealed enclosure. JTR rates its outdoor response at 22 Hz to 600 Hz ±3 dB and specifically notes that room gain can result in sub-10 Hz in-room performance.

Dual 18-Inch High-Excursion Drivers

The Captivator RS2 uses two 18-inch drivers with 36 mm of Xmax, providing tremendous displacement capability for a sealed subwoofer.

JTR's current driver platform incorporates redesigned motor structures with more than a pound of aluminum within each driver's motor and less than 1 mH of inductance. JTR states that the current drivers produce approximately 30% lower distortion than its previous reference drivers, along with increased output and additional low-frequency capability.

JTR also notes that a 21-inch driver would require approximately 26 mm of Xmax to equal the displacement of one of its 18-inch drivers with 36 mm of excursion.

Sealed Design for Deep In-Room Bass

The RS2's sealed architecture distinguishes it from the ported Captivator 2400 and 4000 series.

Rather than relying on a low-tuned port to extend response, the RS2 is designed to take advantage of the natural low-frequency reinforcement available in enclosed listening rooms. JTR specifically engineered the sealed design for single-digit in-room frequency reproduction under appropriate conditions.

This makes the RS2 particularly interesting for dedicated theaters where room gain, placement and DSP can be used together to achieve exceptional low-frequency extension.

4000-Watt RMS DSP Amplifier

Powering the dual 18-inch drivers is an integrated 4000-watt RMS Class D amplifier capable of operating at up to 95% efficiency.

DSP is optimized specifically for the RS2's drivers and sealed enclosure. JTR's current DSP platform incorporates automatic input selection, advanced automatic turn-on and a reduced noise floor.

Additional controls include adjustable delay, low-end adjustment and a low-pass filter, providing useful flexibility when integrating the RS2 into sophisticated theater and audio systems.

XLR & RCA Connectivity

The Captivator RS2 provides both balanced XLR and RCA connections, allowing it to integrate with a broad range of surround processors, preamplifiers and other system electronics.

A 12V trigger is also provided, along with automatic turn-on functionality for installations where the subwoofer needs to operate seamlessly as part of the complete system.

Completely Front-Firing

Both 18-inch drivers are positioned on the front of the cabinet.

This completely front-firing configuration provides greater flexibility when positioning the RS2 behind an acoustically transparent screen, near walls or within a properly designed theater structure.

With dimensions of 40" H × 21" W × 18" D, the RS2 is also remarkably shallow considering its dual 18-inch driver configuration.

Baltic Birch Construction

Controlling two 18-inch drivers operating at high excursion requires an exceptionally rigid enclosure.

JTR constructs the Captivator RS2 from 18 mm, 13-ply void-free Baltic Birch plywood and heavily braces the cabinet to resist unwanted movement and resonance.

The enclosure is finished in Matte Black Paint and includes a magnetically attached grille.

An Exceptional Choice for Multi-Subwoofer Systems

The RS2's sealed design, relatively shallow 18-inch cabinet depth and substantial output capability can make it particularly attractive for sophisticated multi-subwoofer home theater systems.

Multiple RS2 subwoofers can be positioned throughout a theater to provide substantial headroom while helping achieve more consistent low-frequency response across multiple seating positions when combined with appropriate DSP, room correction and professional calibration.
