Unlike DSP-based bass-management products, the CR-1 maintains an all-analog audio signal path. JL Audio uses precision analog circuitry and premium components to provide extensive control over the transition between main speakers and subwoofers without converting the music signal into the digital domain. Precision Subwoofer Integration

The CR-1 addresses one of the most difficult aspects of building a reference stereo system: properly integrating subwoofers with the main loudspeakers.

Simply applying a low-pass filter to a subwoofer leaves the main speakers operating full range. The CR-1 instead divides the signal into complementary paths:

Low-pass filtered output → subwoofer system

High-pass filtered output → main/satellite amplifier

This allows the subwoofer and main speakers to operate as a coordinated system while reducing unnecessary low-frequency demands on the main loudspeakers and their amplifier.

Independent High-Pass & Low-Pass Filters

The CR-1 provides independently adjustable crossover frequencies for the satellite and subwoofer sections.

Crossover frequency range: 30Hz–150Hz

Rather than forcing the high-pass and low-pass sections to use exactly the same frequency, the CR-1 allows each to be optimized independently. Garmin Singapore

This is important in real rooms because the acoustical response of a loudspeaker and subwoofer rarely follows the mathematically ideal response of their electrical filters.

Linkwitz-Riley Filter Architecture

Both filter banks use precision Linkwitz-Riley alignments.

The CR-1 provides selectable:

24dB/octave — 4th order

The 12dB/octave option provides additional flexibility for loudspeakers and rooms where a shallower acoustic transition produces better integration.

Variable Filter Damping / Q

The CR-1 goes substantially beyond a conventional crossover by providing separate Damping controls for its high-pass and low-pass filters.

For 12dB/octave operation:

Q range: 0.3–1.4

For 24dB/octave operation:

Q range: 0.16–4.0

These controls allow the response around the crossover frequency to be reshaped to compensate for the actual acoustic behavior of the loudspeakers, subwoofers and room.

If the crossover region is too lean, the response can be increased around the transition. If it is excessive or thick, the filter behavior can be adjusted in the opposite direction.

This is one of the CR-1's most powerful tools for achieving seamless subwoofer integration.

Independent Subwoofer & Satellite Frequency Control

JL Audio intentionally separates the Subwoofer Frequency and Satellite Frequency controls.

In a theoretically perfect system, both might be set to the same frequency. In an actual listening room, however, speaker roll-off, subwoofer response, placement and room gain can make slightly different electrical crossover frequencies preferable.

Subwoofer / Satellite Balance Control

A continuously variable balance control provides:

±12dB adjustment

This provides centralized level matching from the crossover rather than forcing the entire integration process to depend on the gain controls built into individual subwoofers.

Stereo or Mono L+R Subwoofer Operation

The CR-1 can operate its subwoofer outputs in:

With one subwoofer, the L+R setting combines the left and right low-frequency information.

With dual subwoofers, the owner can choose between independent left/right stereo bass or sending the same summed bass information to both subwoofers.

Two-Channel & Home Theater Integration

One of the CR-1's most useful capabilities is its ability to integrate a serious two-channel stereo system with a multichannel home theater system.

Dedicated Managed Bass Inputs are provided in both balanced and unbalanced formats:

A home-theater processor or AV receiver can feed its managed subwoofer/LFE signal into these inputs.

When the CR-1 is switched to Bypass, the home-theater managed-bass signal can pass directly to the subwoofer outputs while the main stereo signal passes through to the main amplifier without crossover processing. ManualsFile

All-Analog Signal Path

The CR-1 is fundamentally an analog crossover.

JL Audio uses multiplying DAC technology to precisely control the frequencies of its analog filter circuitry, but the music signal itself remains within the analog domain. Garmin Singapore

This distinction is important.

The CR-1 isn't digitizing the incoming analog music signal, processing it through conventional DSP and converting it back to analog. The multiplying DACs control the analog filters, providing precise frequency adjustment while maintaining the CR-1's commitment to analog signal purity.

Precision Component Selection

JL Audio specifies premium components throughout the CR-1's analog circuitry, including:

1% precision resistors

JFET-input audio-grade operational amplifiers

Polypropylene film-and-foil capacitors
