The iFi Audio iCAN Phantom 1.5 is a reference headphone amplifier designed to drive an exceptionally wide range of headphones, from sensitive in-ear monitors to demanding planar magnetic and electrostatic models. Combining more than 15,000mW of maximum balanced output, selectable solid-state and vacuum tube amplification, and an integrated electrostatic energizer, it brings multiple high-end headphone amplification technologies into a single component.

The updated Phantom 1.5 builds on the original design with refined controls, revised gain separation, a new user interface and enhanced iFi Nexis connectivity. Its fully differential PureWave PRO architecture, adjustable electrostatic bias and analog sound-processing features allow listeners to configure the amplifier around their headphones rather than maintain separate amplifiers for different driver technologies.

Three Amplification Modes: Solid-State, Tube and Tube+

The Phantom 1.5 features two independent Class A input stages, allowing listeners to select between solid-state and vacuum tube operation.

Its fully discrete solid-state circuit uses J-FETs, while the separate tube circuit incorporates a hand-selected, computer-matched pair of NOS General Electric 5670 vacuum tubes. Keeping these stages independent avoids the need to switch tubes in and out of a shared circuit.

Three selectable modes provide different listening characteristics. Solid-State emphasizes precision and control, Tube introduces the harmonic character of the GE5670 valves, and Tube+ reduces negative feedback to produce a more pronounced tube presentation.

The ability to switch between these modes makes the Phantom 1.5 particularly versatile for listeners who use several headphones or enjoy tailoring amplification to different recordings.

More Than 15,000mW of Balanced Headphone Power

The iCAN Phantom 1.5 delivers more than 15,000mW of maximum balanced output into 16 ohms, with more than 6,250mW RMS under the manufacturer's specified test conditions.

Its single-ended output delivers more than 5,760mW maximum and more than 4,500mW RMS into the same load. At 600 ohms, the balanced amplifier can supply more than 27V, providing the voltage reserve required by many high-impedance headphones.

Three selectable gain settings—0dB, 12dB and 24dB—help accommodate different headphone sensitivities. Unity gain provides a lower-noise setting for sensitive headphones and IEMs, while the higher settings provide additional gain for more demanding models.

Integrated Electrostatic Headphone Energizer

Unlike conventional headphone amplifiers, the Phantom 1.5 incorporates a dedicated electrostatic energizer, allowing it to drive compatible electrostatic headphones without a separate energizer or amplifier.

Its interchangeable bias system uses individually calibrated SD cards to configure the Custom output for compatible headphones requiring bias voltages between 500V and 640V. A dedicated 230V output accommodates compatible vintage electrostatic designs.

Adjustable AC termination and impedance controls provide further control over the interaction between the amplifier and connected electrostatic headphones.

This architecture makes the Phantom 1.5 a flexible centerpiece for headphone collections that include dynamic, planar magnetic and electrostatic designs. Electrostatic headphones must be connected using the appropriate manufacturer-specified bias configuration.

PureWave PRO Fully Differential Balanced Circuitry

The Phantom 1.5 employs iFi's PureWave PRO architecture, a fully differential circuit design that maintains separate positive and negative signal paths for the left and right channels.

Four individual amplifier circuits preserve this separation from input to output, helping minimize noise and channel crosstalk.

Volume adjustment is handled by a custom six-deck motorized ALPS potentiometer. Four decks control the positive and negative signals for both channels, while the remaining two monitor volume-control operation.

The Phantom 1.5 also introduces redesigned potentiometers with buffered pads for smoother adjustment and improved tactile feedback.

XBass Pro and XSpace Pro Analog Processing

The Phantom 1.5 incorporates iFi's XBass Pro and XSpace Pro technologies, providing additional control over bass response and perceived soundstage.

XBass Pro offers three levels of low-frequency adjustment, allowing listeners to compensate for headphones with lighter bass reproduction or recordings that benefit from additional low-end weight.

XSpace Pro offers three levels of spatial adjustment designed to create a presentation that extends beyond the conventional left-to-right headphone soundstage.

Both systems operate in the analog domain and can be adjusted during playback without changing the source recording.

Refined Controls, OLED Display and iFi Nexis

The Phantom 1.5 retains the original model's distinctive two-tier aluminum chassis while introducing an updated control interface.

Its upper section features tactile controls, VU meters and a color OLED display with a redesigned user interface. A smoked-glass panel with an anti-fingerprint coating provides a view of the internal circuitry.

The iFi Nexis platform adds smartphone-based control, remote adjustment of amplifier settings and over-the-air firmware updates. The updated system also provides tube-health information, helping owners monitor the condition of the amplifier's vacuum tubes.

These refinements make the Phantom 1.5 easier to operate as the centerpiece of a dedicated reference headphone listening system.
