Overview

Goldmund Melos Passive Loudspeakers

The Goldmund Melos Passive is a compact high-end passive loudspeaker handcrafted in Geneva, combining a soft-dome tweeter, 7-inch driver, vented bass loading and advanced passive crossover technology inside Goldmund's distinctive monolithic aluminum enclosure. With a specified 43Hz–25kHz frequency response, 6-ohm nominal impedance and substantial 20 kg / 44 lb construction per speaker, Melos Passive brings Goldmund's loudspeaker engineering to customers who prefer traditional external amplification. Goldmund

Inspired by the design language of Goldmund's larger Tethys and Gaïa loudspeakers, Melos combines compact proportions with a sculptural enclosure and serious mechanical mass. It is specifically intended for high-performance analog/passive systems, allowing the owner to select the amplifier, preamplifier, source and cabling around the loudspeaker rather than using Goldmund's integrated active architecture. Goldmund

Compact Goldmund Passive Architecture

Melos Passive is deliberately different from the wireless Melos Active.

There are no built-in Telos amplifiers, DSP or wireless electronics. Instead, the incoming amplified signal passes through a conventional passive crossover network before reaching the individual drivers—the architecture Goldmund defines as its traditional passive loudspeaker approach. Goldmund

That makes the Melos Passive particularly relevant for listeners who already own high-end amplification or want the freedom to build a system around components such as a Goldmund Telos integrated or power amplifier.

Soft-Dome Tweeter

High frequencies are reproduced by a soft-dome tweeter.

Goldmund pairs the tweeter with the larger 7-inch driver through an advanced crossover engineered to provide smooth frequency integration and controlled dispersion. Rather than treating each driver as an isolated element, the crossover is designed to create a coherent acoustic output and stable soundstage. Goldmund

The complete loudspeaker extends to a specified 25kHz at the upper end of its frequency range. Goldmund

7-Inch Driver

A single 7-inch driver handles the lower frequencies and critical midband.

There is a slight terminology inconsistency in Goldmund's own current documents: the specification sheet identifies it as a 7-inch woofer, while the newer Rev. B user manual calls it a 7-inch medium driver. Both documents describe the same two-driver Melos Passive architecture. Goldmund

For the Shopify listing, I would simply call it a 7-inch mid/bass driver in the descriptive copy while retaining Goldmund's exact published information in the specification section. That avoids overstating something the manufacturer itself currently labels differently.

43Hz–25kHz Frequency Response

Goldmund specifies the Melos Passive at:

43Hz (-6dB) to 25kHz. Goldmund

That's substantial extension from an enclosure measuring only about 9.8 inches wide and 13.8 inches high.

Low-frequency reproduction uses vent loading, allowing the enclosure and 7-inch driver to achieve greater bass extension than would normally be available from the driver operating in a comparably sized sealed enclosure. Goldmund

Advanced Passive Crossover

The crossover is central to the Melos Passive design.

Goldmund describes it as an advanced crossover system engineered for seamless frequency integration and optimum dispersion. The objective is precise frequency balance between the two drive units while maintaining a realistic, coherent soundstage. Goldmund

This distinction matters because the passive Melos cannot rely on the DSP filtering, gain adjustment, delay optimization and Leonardo correction used in Goldmund's digital active loudspeakers. Its acoustic integration must instead be accomplished through the physical loudspeaker architecture and passive crossover network.

6-Ohm Nominal Impedance

The Melos Passive presents a specified:

6.0Ω nominal impedance
4.4Ω minimum impedance. Goldmund

Those figures make it a relatively approachable load for a serious high-end amplifier, although amplifier quality and driver control remain important.

Goldmund itself emphasizes the importance of amplifier control in passive loudspeaker systems, particularly at low frequencies where larger driver movement increases the demands placed on the amplifier. Goldmund

This makes Melos Passive a natural system-building partner for Goldmund Telos amplification.

Monolithic Aluminum Construction

One of the most distinctive aspects of Melos is its physical design.

The speaker is housed in a compact, monolithic cube-like enclosure whose sculpted lines take inspiration from natural rock formations. The design belongs to the Gaïa-influenced generation of Goldmund loudspeakers and incorporates elements derived from both Gaïa and the larger Tethys. Goldmund

The enclosure is finished in Goldmund's characteristic Silver Grey aluminum with Black grilles. Goldmund

At 20 kg / approximately 44 lb per speaker, the Melos Passive is exceptionally substantial for its dimensions.

44 Pounds per Speaker

Each Melos Passive measures only:

9.8 W × 13.8 H × 14.9 D inches

yet weighs:

20 kg / approximately 44 lb each. Goldmund

A stereo pair therefore weighs approximately 88 pounds before stands or packaging.

That unusually high mass relative to cabinet size is one of the clearest indicators that Melos is not designed as a conventional lightweight bookshelf speaker.

Optional Goldmund Melos Stand

Goldmund offers a dedicated Melos Stand compatible with both the Active and Passive versions of the loudspeaker.

The stand uses a rectangular support column and substantial rectangular base with a combination of micro-blasted and brushed aluminum finishes. Adjustable feet allow the speaker to be leveled accurately on different floor surfaces. Goldmund

More importantly, the stand positions the Melos at the appropriate listening height and provides a dedicated mechanical foundation rather than simply placing the speaker on generic furniture.

For The Grid listing, I would make the Melos Stand a related product/accessory, not include it automatically with the loudspeaker unless your Goldmund price sheet explicitly says otherwise.

Goldmund Melos Passive vs. Melos Active

These deserve separate Shopify products because they're fundamentally different system architectures.

Melos Passive Melos Active
Architecture Passive Active / Powered
Tweeter Soft Dome Soft Dome
Main Driver 7" 7"
Amplification External Required 2 × 175W Telos per speaker
DSP No Yes
Wireless No Yes
Digital Input No S/PDIF
Frequency Response 43Hz–25kHz (-6dB) 40Hz–25kHz (-6dB)
Weight 20 kg / 44 lb each 24 kg / 52.9 lb each
Dimensions 25 × 35 × 36.2 cm 25 × 35 × 36.2 cm

The Melos Passive is therefore the model for a customer who wants to choose their own amplifier and maintain a conventional high-end component system. The Active version replaces that external amplification and crossover architecture with integrated Telos amplifiers and Goldmund digital processing.

One thing I would not add is a sensitivity, recommended amplifier power or maximum power-handling number. Goldmund's current Melos Passive specification sheet and Rev. B manual don't publish those figures, so adding numbers from a retailer or an older source would weaken the accuracy of The Grid page.

Goldmund Melos Passive at The Grid HiFi

The Goldmund Melos Passive provides an unusually compact entry into a full Goldmund separates system. Its 6-ohm nominal impedance and 4.4-ohm minimum allow it to be partnered with high-quality amplification while retaining the freedom to select the electronics, digital or analog sources, cabling and system architecture around the loudspeaker.

The Grid HiFi can build the complete system around Melos Passive, including Goldmund Telos amplification, digital processing and sources, cabling, equipment support and the dedicated Melos stands, with amplifier matching and loudspeaker placement optimized for the room.
