The Focal Sub Utopia EM Colour Evo is a reference-grade passive subwoofer engineered for high-end stereo systems, dedicated listening rooms and luxury home theaters. Featuring a 13-inch electromagnetic W-cone bass driver, dual front-facing ports and Focal's reinforced Gamma Structure cabinet, it delivers deep, controlled bass with the scale and precision expected from the Utopia loudspeaker collection.

Unlike conventional powered subwoofers, the Sub Utopia EM Colour Evo is a passive design that requires external amplification. Its electromagnetic driver technology and stackable cabinet allow it to be incorporated into ambitious audio installations, including systems using multiple subwoofers for increased low-frequency output.

Designed as a natural companion to the Viva Utopia Colour Evo and other loudspeakers in Focal's Utopia range, it combines reference-level bass reproduction with a distinctive architectural design.

13-Inch Electromagnetic W-Cone Driver

At the heart of the Sub Utopia EM Colour Evo is a 13-inch (33cm) W-cone woofer powered by Focal's electromagnetic motor technology.

Unlike a conventional permanent-magnet driver, its electromagnetic motor uses a powered field coil to generate the magnetic field. This design gives Focal greater control over the driver's motor system, supporting the substantial force required for demanding low-frequency reproduction.

The W-cone diaphragm uses a composite sandwich construction, combining a structural foam core with layers of glass fiber. This construction balances rigidity, damping and low moving mass to help the driver reproduce bass transients with precision while controlling unwanted cone resonance.

The result is a subwoofer designed to reproduce the weight of orchestral recordings, the impact of cinematic soundtracks and the subtle low-frequency detail of high-resolution music.

Bass Extension Down to 19Hz

With a specified frequency response of 22Hz to 500Hz (±3dB) and a low-frequency point of 19Hz at -6dB, the Sub Utopia EM Colour Evo is engineered to reproduce the lowest frequencies in music and film.

Its wide operating bandwidth provides flexibility when integrating the subwoofer with different loudspeakers and system configurations. In a properly designed system, it can extend the low-frequency performance of full-range speakers or serve as a dedicated bass channel in a multichannel home theater.

The passive architecture also allows system designers to select suitable external amplification and configure bass management around the listening room and accompanying loudspeakers.

Stackable Design for Reference Audio Systems

One of the Sub Utopia EM Colour Evo's defining features is its modular cabinet design. Up to three compatible units can be stacked vertically to create a high-output bass array.

Focal offers two cabinet configurations: a stackable version with a machined top and a top version with a flat upper surface. The appropriate combination should be selected when designing a stacked installation.

Dual Front Ports and Gamma Structure Cabinet

The Sub Utopia EM Colour Evo incorporates two large-diameter front-facing bass-reflex ports. Their generous dimensions are designed to reduce airflow noise, distortion and dynamic compression during demanding low-frequency passages.

The enclosure uses Focal's Gamma Structure construction, with thick MDF panels and internal reinforcement designed to minimize cabinet vibration. By limiting unwanted energy radiated from the enclosure, the cabinet helps preserve bass definition and clarity.

This substantial construction contributes to the subwoofer's weight of 72kg (158.5 lb) per unit and provides a stable mechanical foundation for its electromagnetic driver.

The Sub Utopia EM Colour Evo was developed to complement Focal's flagship Utopia loudspeakers, particularly the Viva Utopia Colour Evo in multichannel systems.
