The Focal Scala Utopia Evo is a reference-grade, three-way floorstanding loudspeaker from Focal's prestigious Utopia III Evo collection. Engineered and manufactured in France, Scala combines an IAL2 pure Beryllium inverted dome tweeter, 6.5-inch W-cone midrange and 11-inch W-cone woofer in a mechanically isolated, multi-enclosure cabinet designed for exceptional imaging, dynamic authority and tonal accuracy.

With 92dB sensitivity, 27Hz–40kHz frequency response and 50–500W recommended amplifier power, the Scala Utopia Evo delivers full-range musical performance in a design suited to sophisticated residential listening environments.

Its advanced engineering includes Focus Time driver alignment, Tuned Mass Damper suspension, Neutral Inductance Circuit technology, Power Flower magnetic architecture and Focal's proprietary W sandwich cones. Each technology addresses a specific aspect of driver control, resonance reduction or acoustic precision.

The Scala Utopia Evo is built for discerning listeners seeking the resolution and scale of a reference loudspeaker without the physical dimensions of the largest Utopia models.

Pure Beryllium IAL2 Inverted Dome Tweeter

The Scala Utopia Evo features Focal's 27mm IAL2 pure Beryllium inverted dome tweeter, developed to reproduce high-frequency information with exceptional precision.

Beryllium combines low mass with extraordinary rigidity, allowing the tweeter to operate across an extended frequency range while controlling unwanted diaphragm breakup.

The inverted dome geometry improves dispersion and acoustic coupling, contributing to precise stereo imaging, natural spatial reproduction and the retrieval of subtle musical detail.

With high-frequency extension to 40kHz, the Scala Utopia Evo is engineered to reproduce the finest harmonic information present in high-resolution recordings.

W-Cone Midrange with TMD Suspension and NIC Technology

A dedicated 6.5-inch Power Flower W-cone midrange driver reproduces vocals, strings and the critical harmonic structure of acoustic instruments.

Focal's proprietary W sandwich diaphragm uses a lightweight foam core between layers of woven glass fiber. This construction balances rigidity, low mass and internal damping to control unwanted resonance.

Two additional technologies refine midrange performance:

Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) Suspension: Precisely positioned damping elements stabilize the driver's surround and reduce unwanted mechanical behavior, particularly in the critical 1–2kHz region.

Neutral Inductance Circuit (NIC): An optimized Faraday ring stabilizes the magnetic field around the voice coil, reducing distortion caused by variations in inductance during driver movement.

Together, these technologies support the Scala's detailed, controlled and natural midrange reproduction.

11-Inch W-Cone Woofer and Power Flower Motor

The Scala Utopia Evo uses a substantial 11-inch (27cm) W-cone woofer to reproduce low-frequency fundamentals with authority and control.

Its composite sandwich diaphragm maintains rigidity under demanding excursion, while Focal's Power Flower multiferrite magnetic structure provides strong magnetic energy and improved ventilation around the voice coil.

The open motor architecture helps dissipate heat and reduce mechanical compression during sustained high-output playback.

Combined with the bass-reflex enclosure, the woofer delivers a specified 27Hz low-frequency response at ±3dB, extending to 24Hz at -6dB.

This design gives Scala the low-frequency capability required for orchestral recordings, electronic music, large-scale acoustic performances and reference stereo playback.

Focus Time Adjustable Driver Alignment

The Scala Utopia Evo uses Focal's distinctive Focus Time architecture, positioning the tweeter, midrange and woofer in separate cabinet sections.

The geometry allows the acoustic centers of the drivers to be aligned toward the listening position, improving time coherence and integration across the frequency spectrum.

This design supports precise image placement, focused center vocals and a stable three-dimensional soundstage.

The independent enclosures also reduce mechanical interaction between the drivers, preventing low-frequency cabinet energy from interfering with delicate midrange and high-frequency reproduction.

Gamma Structure Cabinet and Reference Crossovers

Focal's Gamma Structure cabinet engineering uses heavily reinforced MDF panels and vibration analysis to control enclosure resonance.

The cabinet's substantial mass and internal bracing minimize unwanted acoustic radiation, allowing the drivers to reproduce music without significant cabinet coloration.

The Scala Utopia Evo also incorporates upgraded crossover components, French-made internal wiring, optimized acoustic damping and separate crossover networks.

Dual speaker terminals support compatible bi-wiring and bi-amplification configurations, providing additional flexibility when designing a reference audio system.

Amplifier Matching and Room Integration

The Scala Utopia Evo combines 92dB sensitivity with an 8-ohm nominal impedance, making it compatible with a broad selection of premium amplification.

Its minimum impedance of 3.2 ohms, however, means amplifier stability and current delivery remain important considerations.

Focal recommends 50–500 watts of amplifier power. The ideal amplifier depends on listening distance, room volume, desired playback levels and the complete system architecture.

The Grid HiFi can engineer Scala Utopia Evo systems around reference amplification from Naim, McIntosh, Audio Research, Burmester, Goldmund and other high-end manufacturers, selecting components for electrical compatibility and the client's musical priorities.
