Overview

Focal Cinema LCR Home Cinema Loudspeaker

The Focal Cinema LCR is Focal's reference loudspeaker for the ultimate private cinema.

This is not a conventional architectural speaker.

Cinema LCR takes technology developed for Focal's professional studio monitors—including the flagship Utopia Main—and brings it into a purpose-built loudspeaker designed specifically for high-performance private theaters.

With a massive 13-inch W-cone woofer, dedicated 5-inch M-shaped W-cone midrange, and 1.5-inch M-shaped pure Beryllium tweeter, Cinema LCR delivers the output, dynamics, precision, and bass impact required for serious cinema rooms.

Focal designed the system for private cinemas as large as 2,153 square feet / 200 square meters.

This is Focal home cinema without compromise.

Technology Derived from Focal Professional Utopia

One of the most important things about Cinema LCR is where it comes from.

Focal developed this speaker using technology from its professional division and Utopia Main studio monitors.

Those are the kinds of monitors designed for environments where the people creating and mastering the soundtrack need to hear exactly what's in the recording.

Cinema LCR brings that philosophy into the private cinema.

The goal isn't simply to make movies loud.

It's to reproduce the soundtrack with the precision, dynamics, scale, and impact intended by the people who created it.

Massive 13-Inch W-Cone Woofer

Cinema LCR uses a 13-inch Focal W-cone woofer.

That's serious displacement for an LCR loudspeaker.

The large woofer gives Cinema LCR the ability to reproduce the weight and physical impact demanded by modern movie soundtracks while maintaining the speed and control expected from a reference Focal system.

Frequency response extends to 36Hz ±3dB, with useful low-frequency output reaching 30Hz.

Dedicated Cinema SUBs will still handle the deepest bass and LFE information in a complete theater, but the Cinema LCR itself already delivers substantial low-frequency authority.

5-Inch M-Shaped W-Cone Midrange

A dedicated 5-inch M-shaped W-cone midrange driver handles the frequencies where dialogue, vocals, instruments, and much of the critical information in a soundtrack lives.

Focal's M-shaped cone geometry improves rigidity while helping optimize dispersion and power handling.

The midrange also incorporates TMD — Tuned Mass Damper — suspension technology, designed to stabilize the suspension and reduce unwanted resonance.

For cinema, that means voices remain natural and intelligible even when the soundtrack becomes extremely demanding.

1.5-Inch M-Shaped Beryllium Tweeter

High frequencies are handled by a substantial 1.5-inch M-shaped Beryllium tweeter.

Focal combines the extremely low mass and exceptional rigidity of Beryllium with its M-shaped diaphragm geometry to improve dispersion, reduce distortion, and increase power handling.

That becomes especially important in a large private cinema.

A speaker needs to deliver detail and precision not just to one person sitting in a perfect two-channel listening position, but across multiple seats and at realistic cinema playback levels.

Cinema LCR was engineered for exactly that environment.

Focal W-Cone Technology

Both the woofer and midrange use Focal's W sandwich-cone technology.

The construction places a structural foam core between two sheets of glass, allowing Focal to carefully control three critical characteristics:

  • Lightness
  • Rigidity
  • Damping

The result is extremely low distortion, fast transient response, and highly controlled reproduction.

It's one of Focal's signature high-end driver technologies and a major part of the Cinema LCR's ability to combine enormous output with precision.

93dB Sensitivity

Cinema LCR has a sensitivity of 93dB, allowing it to produce serious output efficiently.

Focal recommends 400 watts at 8 ohms or 800 watts at 4 ohms.

In a theater at this level, we design the amplification around the room rather than simply matching a wattage number on a specification sheet.

Room volume, listening distance, seating layout, desired reference level, number of speakers, processor configuration, and system headroom all need to be considered.

The amplification needs to be engineered as part of the theater.

Left, Center and Right

As the name suggests, Cinema LCR is designed to serve as the left, center, or right channel.

That means we can use three identical speakers across the front of the theater.

That's exactly what we want in a reference cinema.

The left speaker isn't one design while the center is a smaller compromise.

All three channels can use exactly the same loudspeaker architecture.

Dialogue, music, and effects can move across the screen without the tonal character changing from one speaker to another.

Vertical or Horizontal Installation

Cinema LCR gives us considerable flexibility during theater design.

It can be positioned vertically or horizontally depending on the architecture and requirements of the room.

It can also be installed on the wall or integrated into the wall.

That gives us multiple ways to engineer the front soundstage around screen dimensions, room construction, available depth, and sightlines.

Behind an Acoustically Transparent Screen

For a purpose-built projection theater, this is where Cinema LCR really belongs.

Three identical Cinema LCR speakers can be positioned behind an acoustically transparent projection screen.

Left.

Center.

Right.

The speakers disappear completely behind the image.

Dialogue comes from the actors rather than a speaker underneath the screen. Effects move naturally across the picture. The entire front soundstage is physically located where the image is happening.

For a serious private cinema, that's the way we want to do it.

Add Focal Cinema SUB

Focal designed the Cinema SUB specifically to complement Cinema LCR.

Multiple Cinema LCR and Cinema SUB speakers can be combined to scale the system around the size and output requirements of the theater.

That gives us a modular Focal cinema platform rather than forcing the same speaker and subwoofer configuration into every room.

A smaller private cinema and a 2,000-square-foot screening room obviously don't have the same requirements.

The system needs to scale accordingly.

Combine with Focal 1000 Series

Focal also designed Cinema LCR to integrate with its 1000 Series architectural speakers.

That's important because it gives us a complete Focal ecosystem for the room.

Cinema LCR can handle the front soundstage.

Cinema SUB can handle the primary bass system.

Focal 1000 Series architectural speakers can handle surround, rear-surround, and Dolby Atmos channels.

Because these products share technologies including W-cone drivers and Beryllium tweeters, we can maintain the Focal sonic character throughout the theater.

Reference Private Cinema at The Grid HiFi

The Grid HiFi is a Focal Powered by Naim store and private cinema design and integration specialist in Houston, Texas.

Cinema LCR is exactly the kind of product that should never be treated as a simple speaker purchase.

A theater at this level has to be engineered as a complete system.

We'll design the screen size, speaker locations, listening distances, seating layout, sightlines, riser heights, surround and Atmos configuration, subwoofer locations, amplification requirements, processing, acoustics, HVAC considerations, lighting, networking, and control system around the room.

For the ultimate Focal installation, we can use three matching Cinema LCR speakers behind an acoustically transparent screen, integrate Cinema SUBs based on the bass requirements of the room, and complete the immersive system with Focal 1000 Series architectural speakers.

From there, The Grid can handle the complete private cinema—Focal loudspeakers, high-end processing, amplification, projection, acoustically transparent screens, acoustic treatment, theater seating, lighting control, networking, and Control4 automation.

Cinema LCR isn't about putting a bigger speaker in a theater.

It's about designing a private cinema that can reproduce a soundtrack with the scale, precision, dynamics, and impact it was created to have.
