Focal 1000 IWLCR6 Reference In-Wall LCR Speaker

The Focal 1000 IWLCR6 is designed for the kind of home theater where you want the speakers to disappear without giving up the performance of a serious high-end loudspeaker system.

This is a 3-way, closed-back in-wall speaker engineered specifically for high-performance home cinema and architectural HiFi.

With Focal W-cone drivers, a dedicated W-cone midrange, pure Beryllium tweeter, passive radiator technology, and an adjustable mid/high-frequency section, the 1000 IWLCR6 gives us the flexibility to build a reference-level front soundstage directly into the architecture of the room.

It can serve as the left, center, or right channel, allowing all three front speakers to use the exact same loudspeaker.

That's exactly what we want in a serious theater.

A True In-Wall LCR

The 1000 IWLCR6 isn't a conventional architectural speaker being asked to perform LCR duty.

It was designed specifically for it.

Using the same speaker for the left, center, and right channels gives us excellent consistency across the front soundstage.

When dialogue, music, or an effect moves across the screen, the tonal character remains consistent because all three channels are built around the same Focal technology.

For a dedicated private cinema, that's a big deal.

Rotating and Directional Mid/High Section

One of the smartest features of the 1000 IWLCR6 is its rotating midrange and tweeter assembly.

The section can be positioned vertically or horizontally depending on the application.

That means we can install the speaker vertically for the left and right channels and configure another horizontally when the center-channel installation requires it.

More importantly, the mid/high section can be directed toward the listening position.

Instead of simply mounting the speaker flush into the wall and hoping the dispersion works for the room, we can better target the primary seating area.

Dedicated W-Cone Midrange

The 1000 IWLCR6 uses a dedicated 3.12-inch W-cone midrange driver.

That's especially important for the center channel, where dialogue clarity is critical.

Giving the midrange its own driver allows it to concentrate on voices, instruments, and the frequencies where our hearing is most sensitive while the other drivers handle the lower-frequency information.

Both the midrange and tweeter levels can also be adjusted, giving us additional control when calibrating the speaker to the room.

Focal W-Cone Technology

The 1000 IWLCR6 uses Focal's W-cone technology for its midrange and bass reproduction.

The W cone uses a sandwich construction with two layers of glass surrounding a structural foam core.

This allows Focal to carefully balance three critical characteristics:

• Lightness
• Rigidity
• Damping

The result is excellent transient response, low distortion, and highly controlled reproduction of both music and movie soundtracks.

It's technology taken directly from Focal's higher-end traditional loudspeakers and adapted for architectural installation.

Pure Beryllium Tweeter

High frequencies are handled by Focal's pure Beryllium inverted-dome tweeter.

Beryllium combines extremely low mass with exceptional rigidity, allowing the tweeter to respond quickly and reproduce extremely fine detail.

Its response extends all the way to 40kHz.

In a theater, that translates into better reproduction of ambience, spatial information, transient effects, and the small details that help make a soundtrack convincing.

Closed-Back Enclosure

The 1000 IWLCR6 uses an integrated closed-back enclosure.

That's an important distinction in an architectural loudspeaker.

Instead of relying on the unpredictable volume inside the wall cavity, the speaker has its own engineered enclosure.

That gives us much greater consistency from one installation to another and reduces the variables created by different wall construction.

It also makes the IWLCR6 much easier to engineer into a serious theater because we know the speaker's acoustic environment before it ever goes into the wall.

Passive Radiator Technology

Focal uses a passive radiator to extend low-frequency performance while maintaining the compact dimensions required for an in-wall enclosure.

A passive radiator can provide many of the benefits of a bass-reflex design without requiring a conventional port.

The result is useful bass extension down to 43Hz from a speaker that's only about four inches deep.

In a dedicated theater, we'll still typically integrate the IWLCR6 with properly selected subwoofers and bass management, but having that kind of extension gives us much more flexibility when setting crossover points and calibrating the system.

Behind an Acoustically Transparent Screen

This is where the 1000 IWLCR6 becomes particularly interesting.

In a purpose-built private cinema, we can install three identical IWLCR6 speakers behind an acoustically transparent projection screen.

Left. Center. Right.

All identical.

The speakers disappear completely, and dialogue comes directly from the image rather than from a center speaker sitting above or below the screen.

That's the way we prefer to approach a serious projection-based theater whenever the room allows it.

Completely Hidden Focal Home Theater

The IWLCR6 can become the foundation of an entire hidden Focal theater.

We can use the 1000 IWLCR6 for the front stage, additional Focal architectural speakers for the surrounds, and 1000 Series in-ceiling models for Dolby Atmos.

Add properly engineered subwoofers and the entire loudspeaker system can virtually disappear.

The room doesn't have to look like an equipment showroom to sound like one.
