Focal 1000 IWLCR Utopia Reference In-Wall LCR Speaker

The Focal 1000 IWLCR Utopia is the flagship of Focal's architectural loudspeaker lineup and is designed for private cinemas where hiding the speakers cannot mean compromising the sound.

This is a true Utopia-level, 3-way in-wall LCR loudspeaker, engineered specifically for the left, center, and right channels of an uncompromising home theater.

With seven drivers, Focal W-cone technology, dual M-shaped midrange drivers, a pure Beryllium tweeter, adjustable d'Appolito architecture, bi-amplification capability, and massive power handling, the 1000 IWLCR Utopia allows us to build an extraordinary front soundstage directly into the architecture of the room.

Seven Drivers per Speaker

Each 1000 IWLCR Utopia uses seven individual drivers:

• Four Bass Drivers
• Two 3.12" W-Cone M-Shaped Midrange Drivers
• One Pure Beryllium Inverted-Dome Tweeter

This isn't a conventional architectural speaker scaled up for theater duty.

Focal designed the IWLCR Utopia specifically to deliver the output, dynamics, resolution, and control required for a reference-level private cinema.

With 92dB sensitivity and enormous power handling capability, it can reproduce the kind of dynamic swings that make a large theater come alive.

Perfect for Left, Center and Right

The IWLCR Utopia is designed to perform equally well as a left, center, or right speaker.

That allows us to use three identical speakers across the front of the theater.

That's the ideal scenario.

Instead of using different speaker designs for the left and right channels and then trying to find a center speaker that matches them, all three front channels can use exactly the same loudspeaker.

When dialogue, music, or an effect moves across the screen, the tonal character remains consistent from one side to the other.

Adjustable d'Appolito Midrange and Tweeter

At the center of the IWLCR Utopia is Focal's adjustable d'Appolito midrange/tweeter assembly.

The pure Beryllium tweeter sits between two dedicated W-cone midrange drivers.

The entire assembly can be oriented ±15 degrees toward the listening position.

That gives us much greater control over how the speaker interacts with the seating area.

Rather than simply mounting an in-wall speaker and accepting where it fires, we can optimize the critical midrange and high-frequency energy for the primary listening positions.

That's especially important in a large private cinema.

Dual W-Cone M-Shaped Midrange Drivers

The IWLCR Utopia uses two 3.12-inch W-cone M-shaped midrange drivers positioned around the tweeter.

The midrange is where dialogue, vocals, and much of the information that gives music and movie soundtracks their character lives.

Giving that range two dedicated drivers provides greater output and control while allowing the four bass drivers to concentrate on the lower frequencies.

Focal's M-shaped cone geometry is designed to improve dispersion, reduce harmonic distortion, and increase power handling.

Four Bass Drivers

Four dedicated bass drivers give the 1000 IWLCR Utopia the output required for serious cinema.

The speaker reaches 45Hz ±3dB, with useful extension down to 40Hz.

That's remarkable performance from a speaker only about four inches deep.

In a reference theater, we'll still use dedicated subwoofers for the lowest frequencies and LFE channel.

But the IWLCR Utopia's bass capability gives us tremendous flexibility with crossover points and allows the front stage to reproduce the weight and dynamics demanded by modern movie soundtracks.

Focal W-Cone Technology

Focal's W cone is one of the company's signature high-end driver technologies.

It uses a sandwich construction consisting of two sheets of glass surrounding a structural foam core.

This allows Focal to precisely control three critical properties:

• Lightness
• Rigidity
• Damping

The result is excellent transient response, low distortion, and extremely transparent reproduction.

It's technology developed for Focal's high-end loudspeakers and brought into an architectural platform designed for serious private cinema.

Pure Beryllium Tweeter

At the center of the speaker is Focal's pure Beryllium inverted-dome tweeter.

Beryllium combines extremely low mass with exceptional rigidity, allowing the tweeter to reproduce high frequencies with extraordinary speed and precision.

Its response extends all the way to 40kHz.

The advantage isn't simply extended treble.

It's the ability to reproduce micro-detail, ambience, spatial information, transient attack, and the subtle cues that make a soundtrack or music recording feel real.

Bi-Amplification Capability

The 1000 IWLCR Utopia can be bi-amplified, giving us another level of control when designing a reference theater.

Focal specifies amplifier capability of:

100–750 watts at 8 ohms

or

200–1,500 watts at 4 ohms

That's serious power handling for an architectural loudspeaker.

It gives us the ability to build the amplification system around the size of the theater, listening distance, desired output level, and overall performance goals.

Behind an Acoustically Transparent Screen

This is where the 1000 IWLCR Utopia really makes sense.

Install three identical speakers behind an acoustically transparent projection screen.

Left.

Center.

Right.

All three speakers disappear completely behind the image.

Dialogue comes directly from the actor on screen. Music and effects move seamlessly across the front soundstage. There isn't a center speaker sitting below the screen or a pair of towers competing visually with the room.

You see the movie.

You hear the system.

Add the 1000 IWSUB Utopia

Focal designed the 1000 IWSUB Utopia specifically to complement the IWLCR Utopia.

That allows us to build substantial low-frequency capability directly into the architecture as well.

Depending on the theater, multiple IWSUB Utopia modules can be incorporated into the system to provide greater output and more consistent bass throughout the seating area.

For the most ambitious theaters, we can also integrate dedicated high-output subwoofer systems based on the room size and performance requirements.

Bass isn't something we guess at.

We engineer it around the room.

The 1000 IWLCR Utopia isn't a speaker you simply order and install.

A system at this level needs to be engineered around the room.

We'll determine the correct screen size, speaker locations, seating positions, sightlines, listening distances, surround and Atmos layout, subwoofer locations, amplification requirements, processing, acoustic treatment, and calibration before the room is finished.

For the ultimate installation, we can place three identical 1000 IWLCR Utopia speakers behind an acoustically transparent screen and design the entire Focal architectural system around them.
